Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The mountain area in Bagua, Huatan Township, Changhua County is rich in star fruits. The fruit trees bear fruits from October through January and February of next year. Most of the fruit farmers inherit the orchards of the last generation. During the heyday, the star fruit is the representative local specialty of Huatan Township'. In Huatan Township, there is a small hill of star fruits. The hill is called Hill of Hope, and there are a lot of old trees. The oldest and the strongest one is A-wan! It is a star fruit tree! A-wan is advantageously located at the hillside of the Bagua Mountain Range. It is on the leeward side and faces the sun, with its roots in the catchment, A-wan is protected from typhoons and can absorb adequate water and sunlight, and avoid northerly wind and cold damage, so it grows very strong. What does it eat to grow so strong? The answer is: sunlight, air, mineral water and rich humus layer. In the natural environment, A-wan can grow well without chemical pesticides and artificial fertilizers. A-wan's home-Hill of Hope is a blessed place which has fresh air, adequate sunshine and clean water.

2. Summary of Our Project

At the hillside to the southeast of our school, there is a hundreds-year-old star fruit tree. It can produce more than '10,000' star fruits, and thus it calls A-wan (in Chinese wan means numeral 10,000). A-wan was planted during the reign of Emperor Guangxu. It is Taiwan's native species, as well as one of the oldest and largest star fruit tree. The star fruit is a natural raw material of pickled star fruit juice, which once prevailed. Later, more and more beverages have appeared, and traditional fruit juice has no market. This industry has been declined gradually. However, after efforts, besides A-wan juice, new products have been developed such as A-wan jam, cakes, bread and dessert... In spring, the leaves are green, in summer, pink flowers are bloomed, in autumn the tree bears fruit and in winter the fruit becomes mature. The hundreds-year-old A-wan can bring us new opportunities.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

•The school network environment: A FTTB fiber optic-based academic network. •Home network environment: home ADSL broadband internet.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Typhoon may cause premature drop: As Typhoon Soudelor swept through Taiwan on August 8, 2015, heavy storm occurred in Changhua. Although A-wan is on the leeward side and faces the sun, it was inevitably damaged, and premature drop was serious. As there are fewer star fruits on the tree. Ms. Yang arranged us to participate in practice courses. Lack of experience during interviews: Due to the lack of relevant experience in interviews, we were all very nervous. Fortunately, the teachers guided us to divide the interview tasks (verbal interview, making a note, recording audio and taking photo). The pre-assignment can ensure smooth interviews, and obtaining interview records.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

When we decided to use A-wan the Star Fruit Tree as theme, we found that Hill of Hope which is near our school have many stories. There is not only hundred-year-old A-wan, but also 4th generation of owner-Ms. Yang's story.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Computer Data query, word processing, data uploading and web page making Digital camcorder Taking a photo, and record the activity process USB Drive Data storage Printer Data printing Smart phone Communication, recording interviews Microsoft Word Write web essay, experience and other words processing GoogleChrome Data query, upload and download Google Drive Uploading data for sorting Google-Gmail Document delivery and message notification Messenger Information communication between team members Photocap Edit video and banner Inkscape Make webpage image Weebly Webpage making

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In order to obtain the data, we interviewed related persons in various ways. We personally interviewed the hostess of Hill of Hope, Ms. Yang, Mr. Yang, Dr. Li, and Huatan Township Head. At first, we were very nervous and afraid to ask questions. Only when the teacher reminded us, we could remember continuing speaking. After several interviews, we were no longer nervous and finished the interviews smoothly.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Thanks to the Cyberfair project, we had the opportunity to experience how to make star fruit juice, star fruit bread and cakes. It was very meaningful and useful for us to make interviews, participate in experience activities, team discussions and make web page. The team is like a big tree, we are fruits of that tree, and the knowledge we acquire in the study are indispensable nutrients and good rain, making us grow stronger.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The contents of our Cyberfair project include interview, records, activity experience, and data collected from the network and books, and are compiled by all team members through discussion. The interview contents have been authorized by the respondents and most of the photographs were taken by us, and other data or images are provided by respondents or cited via the Internet or by books. At the end of each page, we indicate the source of the cited articles or photos and the website address in order to respect intellectual property rights.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

In this Cyberfair project, we have found there is a hundreds-year-old star fruit tree- A-wan in Huatan Township. It is near our school. Even if the owner left it 15 years, A-wan stands still and bears lots of fruits. We should learn its persistence in our study and doing other things. In this second Cyberfair project, we have known importance of team cooperation. Presentation of the perfect webpage requires skills of each team member. One person cannot complete one webpage. In the first Cyberfair project, due to the lack of experience and failure to control time, some team members could not finish the assigned work within the deadline, and rushed the work at last. The results were not satisfactory. In this time, we modified the plan and perform the plan step by step. Thus, each member can finish their work in the specified time. The perfect webpage is presented. Through the webpage, we can know and understand A-wan.
