Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Kaohsiung, a booming cith, is fighting for modernization in every aspect. During the process of modernization, many are lost, including jobs losing to workers in southeastern asian countries. Both government and businesses alike are trying their best to create new jobs for workers. PUHU, as a local Kaohsiung shoemaking industry, is doing their share.

2. Summary of Our Project

Most traditional workforce-demanding businesses are declining during the process of modernization. PUHU, a local shoemaking industry in Kaohsiung, originally doing OEM for foreign companies, mainly Japanese companies, has now owned its own brand name. It is trying hard to promote its own brand--PUHU--through many campaigns. It aims to set an example of not moving to other countries and to become a quality shoemaking tycoon in the world.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We almost had to learn everything from the very beginning since both students and instructors were laymen to the project. Many disagreements occurred during the process of teaming up. Through several rounds of heated discussion and teamwork, we finally worked together. Students needed to be reminded regularly of the schedule. At the time of frustration, the instructors pepped up students' spirits and the students encouraged one another. It was teamwork that made our porject possible.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Though our first time, learning from one another and giving one another aid when possible, is what we get from doing the project.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

It was Ms. Chang Shiou-chu, the Introduction to Business teacher, who monitored our participation in the project. Her idea was that learning should not be contained in classroom only. Paying visits to PUHU and interviewing its Chief Manager, Mr. Hsue, offered students another knid of learning, grouping learning, and getting first-hand materials from the people concerned. This was really rewarding.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

At the beginning, we spent much of our time finding and locating needed materials from books and magazines. At the later and last stages, computers came in to play their part. We had a whole Computer Lab equipped with the latest models to use, tidying up and writing our web pages. Without computers, our project couldn't be finished.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Once grabbing the 3rd place in Taiwan area competition, we had posted our work on our school web site. Since then, many friends living outside of Kaohsiung City and students' parents called us to ask about the project. When we dispatching our questionnaires in the streets, most passersby passionately filled out the sheets and asked us to tell them more about PUHU. Students' learning attitudes changed too. Once getting home, they no longer occupied the remote control watching TV. Instead, they immersed in doing their project assignments, which really made the parents happy.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our doing the project is sure to bring good results. The school administration experiences a new dimension of learning. The parents are happy about their children's commitment to doing the project. The community gradually knows that they have a local quality shoemaking company. Citizens are welcome to come visit our web pages to learn more about PUHU.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Before doing the project, the instructors had sought help from the school administration and teaching staff. During doing it, several members from the Educational Bureau of Kaohsiung City offered their unselfish help. When we needed more materials from outside the school, Kaohsiung Cultural Center Library opened their hands and helped us out. Questionnaires dispatched were met with goodwill. We really thanked them for their big help.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Originally, none of us believed we would move thus far. But finally we made it.
