Project Overview

1. Description of Our Team

We were all in Doors to Diplomacy class and we all realize that we were interested in the Japanese culture, specifically anime, manga, etc. We decided to make a web site for people to view to learn about the influence on anime and manga on kids in the United States. After gathering information, we split up the work. Kenny would do the introduction and Bibliography. Quintano would do Cosplay and videos. Brian does the Otaku and video games. Kiyana does the differences between anime and manga. We came up with the name Global connections because Anime and Manga does not just affect the United States and Japan, but affects other countries too.

2. Summary of Our Project

We had two purposes in creating this website. First, we wanted to show how much anime affects the world. Not just the kids in the United States, but kids all around. Even the adults are affected by anime. Second, Anime is changing the world. You can teach with and learn about other cultures with anime.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Some of us have computers at home, but we mostly worked at St. Mary’s University. It is where we go on Saturday to participate in Upward Bound.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The main problem was that we only had Saturday to see each other and talk about what we wanted. We started around November, but with thanksgiving and Christmas around the corner it limited our time together. Some of us had busy schedules and homework, so it left little time to work on things. Some people had little or no internet access or had internet taken away from them.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Well it has been awhile since Upward Bound has had the spotlight on their successful program and we wanted to make the Upward Bound community proud.

6. How did your activities and research for this Doors to Diplomacy Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We addressed the content Arts and Culture

How did this project fit into your required school, district, or state curriculum guidelines? Upward Bound offered Doors to Diplomacy as a class, we learned how the internet can be a great communication tool and how to use it for that. Some learned how to make a website. The group practiced Researching and relying on each other to do their project responisbilities. We learned that diplomacy is important for our ideas and culture to be accepted by other countries, we have to accept their ideas and culture.

What discoveries did you make about your educational system? About the role you play in your school community? Everybody has their role to play in the community.

Has using the Internet for teaching and learning been more effective than traditional methods? If so, explain? Yes, We learned things by researching and we made a website so others can learn what we know.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your Doors to Diplomacy project?

The Internet, St. Mary's library, YouTube videos, and some prior knowledge provided the resources for the project.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your Doors to Diplomacy project both on-line and in person.

Many of the group's peers do not have any knowledge about anime and much of Japenese pop culture. We have provided a resource for them to learn about Japenese pop culture.

Through social media, the group will be able to share their research with their peers.
