Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our community is where our school is located. Our school as the center, there are wetlands, tropical horticultural experiment branch, Cheng Chin Lake, Taiwan Water Cooperation, and baseball stadium nearby.

2. Summary of Our Project

The project wants to focus on community environmental security and safety issues. When it comes to environmental awareness, most people will think about how to protect environment but in order to keep balance between individuals, communities, and environment, community safety and security play an important role in our lives. Without environment safety and security, human beings cannot happily live in the environment. Therefore, this project results from the importance of sustainability and the health and wellbeing for all at all ages.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

When we are trying to get the open source data from the Website, we found out that they didn't update the date up to date. If the data is up-to-date, it will help our App Design to be more accurate and useful for the people who need it. Therefore, we asked computer and technology teacher to help us with the design of the Smartphone Application and she suggested us that we can use those data then and once the date get updated, we will replace the old data with the new ones.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

It helps elevating my students work to international level and motivates them to revise and modify their research again and again.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

This International Schools CyberFair project keeps high standards as a research project. By reviewing other schools' project sites, we have good models to follow and they will try to outperform those previous projects. In Taiwan, English is not spoken in our daily life. Through working on this project, we apply English language and use it in an academic way. We have learned to apply inquiry learning, project-based learning and ICT skills, collaboration and communication skills while working on this project.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We have learned how to create a Google Earth Project to locate the unsafe places in our community. We apply ICT skills to collaboratively work on editing the website. On top of that, when we encounter more technical problems, we will ask computer teacher for help. Our project teacher also invited some guest speakers to teach us coding and technology skills, which help a lot when we created our final project.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In order to reach. the high standards of the project, we had Video Conference three times with students from India, the Philippines, Vietnam an Thailand to gain more insights on how students from other countries do on the project and we also share what we have done. Our product has the best technical functions and we actually created the Smart Phone Application so we are rewarded from our good efforts and dedication.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

There are house-renting websites in Taiwan. However, compared to the house-renting sites such as Trulia, it is lack of community security information. Therefore, with our Anti-crime App, we provide the past criminal records information for first-comers in the community. In this way, we can provide more information not only for people but also architecture companies if they want to sell their houses for better price.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We have demonstrated our Anti-crime App with lots of scholars and experts. We have gained lots of advice from them and thus we revise an modify this App accordingly. We even want to suggest the local police to provide the up-to-date criminal information for us to make this App more accurate and precise.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We have created the Anti-Crime App, which is quite rare for high school students. Therefore, this experience is very valuable and we also hope this App can further develop to have a better version so the government or local jurisdictions can really use it to combat crimes.
