Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Da Qiao Village is located in the north side of Dacun Township, bordering Huatan Township in the north, Pinghe Village in the east, Jiadong Village in the west, and Guogou Village in the south. Most lands in the village are farmland. In the east of the railroad mainly grows rice, and in the west grows grapes the most. In the early, most residents engaged in farming for a living. Our project is to research the changes Da Qiao Community Development Association has brought to Da Qiao Village in recent years.

2. Summary of Our Project

The existence of a community is to solve all kinds of problems encountered in survival and life because an individual cannot do certain things, and it must be possible through teamwork. The concept of community development was introduced to Taiwan, and it has been nearly thirty years. It is initially dominated by the government and then by the local people. Through participation in public affairs, the community can be united and then shape the features of the community. We hope children can learn about the development of their hometown community, understand the local life and build a closer connection with people through this research project. Finally, as time goes by, a distinctive community can be formed. A leader of the organization plays an important role in leading the community toward a better future.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Due to the school schedule, it is usually hard for us to observe community activities. We can only participate in community activities on the weekends or during the winter vacation. Furthermore, because most of the elders communicate in Taiwanese, the ability of our Taiwanese is limited ,and we need our teacher to help us to understand.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Taking this opportunity to participate in International CyberFair, we understand the impact of community development on our hometown. It reawakens people's feelings for the land and their hometown to make alienated neighbors much closer and allow the local people the possibility to make decisions. It is no longer for the government to determine everything. Under community development, the residents can reunite. Gradually, the lonely elderly can connect with other lonely ones, do healthy activities and hang out in the community. Mutualism and a healthy environment will be created. Only by being kind to each other can we stick together.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our research project first searches and integrates literature and trains students to organize information and get the key points. Improve students' abilities to observe details in their living environment with a community field visit. Contact community elders to make students feel what elders need. Students understand how community activities change everyone as they participate. Students' potential can be stimulated through this process, building camaraderie among teammates. Allow students to use online tools and modern digital products properly to overcome challenges in the research process.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We first use tablets to search for Internet data and discuss the literature with Jamboard. At school, we use a projector to discuss. During the interview, we use mobile phones to take photos and record. Finally, we use desktops, laptops, tablets and mobile phones to link to document collaboration and co-authoring online and integrate the data into the research results.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In this research project, we participated in community activities, went to all places of the community to observe, and visited the community’s relevant people. We saw the enthusiastic volunteers dedicated their energy and time to community service and found different changes in the community. These changes come from the Community Development Association. We hope everyone knows the importance of a positive community development association in the local area.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our research project only represents a small part of the Community Development Association’s efforts. We hope more and more people can know the dedication of the Daqiao Community Development Association. We can create a virtuous cycle by treating people kindly and giving what we have. Finally, the association can operate sustainably and work with the local people.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

In this project, our school teachers and parents help us overcome the difficulties we faced. When we participated in community activities in person, the elders and community volunteers warmly welcomed us and answered all our questions. We would especially like to thank Ms. Tsai Hsiu-Feng Xiufeng, the chairperson of the Daqiao Community Development Association, who accepted our interview and provided a lot of information and experience to help us better understand the difficulties and challenges of community development.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Through this research project, we realize the importance of the community development association to the local area. It is hard to gather the local people to involve with the local service without this association. In the research process, we faced many problems, such as providing care and attention to elders and women as well as children and youth rights, which need someone to care for and promote. We hope the enthusiasm and dedication can last long and make our community sustainable.
