Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our community is located at the back of Taoyuan Railway Station. Compared to the area in front of the railway station, our community is growing more slowly. Most families in our community are working class, so parents here feel that education is important because only with good education can their children have greater chance to be in the upper-class.

2. Summary of Our Project

This Christmas we wanted to do something to help the underprivileged. During the planning process, we stumbled across a goods bank that provides people food and grocery help near our school. We visited the goods bank, understanding how this bank works, and decided to collect canned food to help families facing dire hunger.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:4-6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We encountered two main difficulties when doing this project. First, we needed to ask permissions to go out for visiting the goods bank and interviewing the director of the goods bank. Going out during the class period needs to fill out the form and get the approval of all the directors in our school, so we spent some time dealing with the paperwork. Second, setting up a website was a new skill for both the teachers and us and we didn’t have time to take class for it, so we learned how to set it up with Google Sites ourselves with online resources. The process of learning by doing with our teacher was fun.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Because of this project, we found out that there is a goods bank near the school that help vulnerable families. This project also let the teachers and students of the school know about this organization, and they can continue to donate materials and food nearby to help those in need.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our school offers independent research courses, and participation in this project is exactly in line with the needs of our school's curriculum: 1. Cultivate the interest and spirit of research; 2. Provide practical research experience; 3. Strengthen the training of research methods; 4. Cultivate the ability of independence and self-study; 5. Improve the ability of problem solving; 6. Develop the ability of high-level thinking.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

To complete this project, we learned many things from the whole interview process. Before the oral interviews, we learned how to write interview questions, the rules of Interview etiquette, and learn to operate video equipment. After the interviews, we learned to cut and edit the video clips with CyberLink PowerDirector. Besides, to set up a website, we learned to use two website builders: Google Sites. Throughout the research process, we not only learned about how a goods bank work, but also learned many new skills.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Because of the implementation of this project, the students in the research team got to know the goods banks in the community. They have the opportunity to get to know their own community and and to talk to organizations in the community. Furthurmore, In order to collect canned food on campus to help the goods bank, the research team also introduced this organization in the community tolet teachers and students know about it.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

This was the first time that our school has carried out collecting canned food for the poor activity since its establishment.Because of this action, they know that they can regularly donate food and groceries to the goods bank near our school. After our website is completed, it will be posted on the school's Facebook fan page to let more people in the neighboring community know about An Jia Goods Banks.Every citizen can find the food bank closest to where they live to donate, extending goodwill.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The completion of this project is thanks to Ms. Li from the Taoyuan Family Service Center. She let us visit An jia Goods Bank and accepted our interview. When leading the whole school to collect canned food, we thanked all the directors and team leaders for helping us promote it. In addition, we would like to thank many teachers for guiding us when building the webpage.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

This year's theme is Be Kind and Unite, so we got to know the social welfare agency near the school through this research. Furthermore, because we wanted to help this institution, we also launched a charity event in the school. Therefore, in addition to setting up a webpage to introduce the goods bank and record the whole process, we also shared our movement to DFC (Design for Change) this year.
