Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Changhua County living circle that revolves around Yuanlin comprising Yuanlin Township, Lukang Township, Shetou Township, Puxin Township, Dacun Township and so on, is in central Taiwan. Connected by High Speed Rail, Taiwan Railway and Bus Transfer Station, the living environment is very convenient, forming Changhua Community. In the community, there are many local special snacks, street food and Taiwan’s own diet culture. The project scope is within Changhua County. We paid field visits in the communities to discover local special street food and its own food culture.

2. Summary of Our Project

The main goal of the project is for the children to dive into special street food and diet culture in our community, not only to open their eyes to the food production processes and to the street food vendor startup experiences, but also for them to learn from the role models and cultivate a love for our hometown.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

There are two computer classrooms in our school. The number of the computers used to complete the research is 70. Every homeroom teacher is assigned a desktop computer, a laptop computer and a 75-inch large touchscreens. In addition, there are optical wireless network launchers. One can use wifi internet everywhere on campus.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The students lack a logical competence to arrange information. When searching for data, it was uneasy for them to look for the information related to the project. Besides, being unfamiliar with the software, when organizing photos and project information, they often lagged behind schedules because of several unexpected situations. We divided them in groups and encouraged them to cooperate with others to speed up the information gathering process. Through group discussions, it was easier for teachers to give instructions needed. We asked the students to prepare USB flash drives and make use of the network hardware to back up files. What’s more, we repeatedly and intensively instruct them software usage and encouraged them to share experiences with others for them to be familiar with it. We also encouraged the students to practice typing at home and complete the project patiently.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

After many field trips and much time put in information search, we got to know a lot of things that we did not have prior knowledge of: many special street food cultures in Changhua County. Therefore, we want to share our acquired knowledge and experience with more out-of-towners through the website, so that they will be encouraged to visit our community which will lead to an animation of tourism and local street food development.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The project theme closely intertwined with seven fields (Language, Social Society, Scientific Technology, Comprehensive Bearings, Arts and Humanities and Health and Physical Education). The process helps cultivate students’ development potentials, attitude to respect, to be caring and to cooperate. Moreover, it urges them to be active in exploration and researching, enhancing their abilities to think independently and to solve problems on their own.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We searched for related information and learning materials through online library. Word Processing Software: Excel?Word?PowerPoint Browser: Google Chrome ?Microsoft Edge

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Through the research project, we found that most of the students were pretty keen on participating and absorbing related knowledge. Their interests of having a profound exploration into the development history and obstacles of different industries had been aroused, which further spurred the traditional industries heritage and carried it forward. Aside from going on field trips to the local street food vendors, we hope to arouse people’s interest in community’s food culture and to promote them.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

After many field trips and much time put in information search, we got to know a lot of things that we did not have prior knowledge of: many special street food cultures in Changhua County. Therefore, we want to share our acquired knowledge and experience with more out-of-towners through the website, so that they will be encouraged to visit our community which will lead to an animation of tourism and local street food development.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The principal, directors, teachers and parents fervently helped and guided the students during the interview, photos taking and reports writing. They also offered to pick them up. Their encouragement is our biggest motive. Our appreciation also goes to the special street food vendors. They took time out of their busy schedules to give us interviews, offer us relevant information and share valuable knowledge and experiences with us and we benefitted a lot from it.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Participating in the project taught us that Changhua is not only famous for tire and hosiery industries, special local street food is also one of its characteristics. It is a place with many special street food, affecting livelihood economy profoundly. We hope people can explore our food culture, which will further stimulate provincial economy.
