Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

We live in Zhongli, a town of Taoyuan City, Taiwan. There is the largest airport here, our lives are very convenient and international. Taoyuan is also an industrial castle. The city goal is to develop technology products. There are some companies here produce “plant-based meat”. Although countless dishes here are great, plant-based meat has a lot of benefits that we don't know. Let's discover it together.

2. Summary of Our Project

There are more and more meat lovers in the world. Since 2013, the supply of meat to everyone in Taiwan has up to 77.69 kilograms. Eating large numbers of meat will produce lots of gas and might cause “global warming”. Some vegetarians eat “plant-based meat” instead of meat and some people take “plant-based meat” as the second choice of protein. But not everyone can accept it. Some people think “plant-based meat” is more environmentally friendly. It also looks and tastes like the real one. Other people think that “plant-based meat” is not made from real ingredients. After reading lots of news, reports and having an interview with Uncle Frank who works at SONG_XHEN, the biggest famous company in Taoyuan. Then we have the answer. Which one is better for us, good for our health and protect our planet?

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

First, because of COVID-19, we couldn't visit SONG-ZEN biotechnology in person. Instead, we chose GOOGLE Meet to go on an online interview with Uncle Frank who is a sales manager in SONG-ZHEN. An online meeting may be a little inconvenient, but we still tried our best to prepare for the interview. Second, the group members come from different classes. We don't have enough time to work on the project together. It's a big problem for us, and we only can use some break time to discuss the project. Luckily, we did it, and we enjoyed all the time that we worked together. Finally, the most difficult thing we had faced is designing the website for our project. We tried a new way to make it, and it took us much time to finish it. After some try and error, we finally completed our project and finished the website.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

To meet the standards of the CyberFair theme this year, we had chosen to learn and discover “plant-based meat”. Through it, we wanted to know more about this kind of meat and find the best diet to keep environmental sustainability.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our project is about plant-based meat. We hope through this project, people from different countries will know more about this. We did some research and had some actions to take our project to the next level. Such as have an interview with Uncle Frank who works in SONG-ZHEN, the most famous 'plant-based meat'company, in Taoyuan, join the flea market at school and introduce it to our friends with a game, etc. Also, we’re grateful that everyone we asked for help is so friendly and enthusiastic. For example, Mr. Jiang(Uncle Frank), the staff in SONG-ZHEN, taught us a lot of useful information. Next, Internet tools are useful for us because we could save and share knowledge easily. Through this project, we learned the importance of teamwork and some useful technique skills. We believe that all the things we learned will help us someday in the future.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

In order to make our project look better, we had used a lot of tools to finish our project. Camera and smartphones to take pictures and videos, computers to surf the Internet for getting the information we want, Ipad to present our PPT about the project to everyone. In addition to those, we use some Computer Software to make our website and let it look prettier, according to WIX, Google Site, and Canva. All of them are used to help us communicate easily and share ideas more quickly with each other online during the COVID-19.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

For this project, we needed to interview someone who is willing to offer us useful and practical information about plant-based meat, and finally we interviewed a worker in SONG-ZHEN plant-based meat company. When we had an online meeting with him, he was very glad to tell us all the answers to our questions. He gave us a wonderful lesson. Because of him, now we all know more about plant-based meat. We are also glad to share the knowledge we learned from him with everyone.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Through our project, we want to develop plant-based meat. First of all, we have studied about it. And then we created questionnaires to test how students know about this kind of food. We found that people know less about it, so we started to try our best to promote this new diet style for others and let people know more about it. Because we are just junior high school students, we cannot do too many things as adults. Now, what we can do is to promote the new diet style to our schoolmates who barely know about it. We joined a flea market and designed games, letting students in our school easily understand plant-based meat. We also created FB and Instagram account to share some useful information that we hope to let others around the world know more about it.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The person we interviewed through this project is Uncle Frank who is interested in the field and also works in SONG-ZHEN, which is the biggest plant-based meat company in Taoyuan, Taiwan. Uncle Frank was very enthusiastic to tell us much information about plant-based meat and gave us some samples to have the food sampling with our good friends. We invited some students in our school to the food sampling, asked them for tasting it and gave us some comments about the plant-based meat after they ate. We felt thankful to everyone who has helped us with this project.
