Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our Community is located at the southernmost part of Metro Manila. Muntinlupa is an ancient term that refers to a town, which was originally known as Munting lupa. Due to the area's mountainous terrain, the term 'monte' was expanded and the name Muntinlupa was derived. This city is well-known for the depth and breadth of its historical and cultural heritage. Despite the fact that the city had few historical records to back up its claims to authenticity, stories told through verbal interchange provided valuable insights into the city's past. It was not until 1917 that Muntinlupa was granted independence from Rizal. The city's economy began to flourish, and new establishments arose. The transformation of a city from what was once known as a grazing meadow for cows to a city with rich culture and history.

2. Summary of Our Project

The word Barangay derived from the word ‘balangay’, which are the sailboats that brought settlers of Malay to the Philippines. Each sailboat carried a large family. The master of the boat gained power as leader of each established barangay. A barangay is defined as a small divisional district forming the most local level of government. After the rectification of the 1986 Constitution, Muntinlupa was divided into two districts, the first includes four barangays, and the second includes the other five. In line with the historical transformation and urbanization of our community, our project aims to inform readers about the different Barangays in Muntinlupa. Each Barangay contains distinctive traits that differentiates themselves from each other. With nine Barangays, Muntinlupa comprises enough elements to showcase the rich culture the Emerald City has developed throughout the years. With our project titled as “Buhay Muntinlupa”, or in English, “Life in Muntinlupa”, we aim to showcase the diversity, history, and culture of our community through highlighting what each barangay has to offer.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Due to the rise of COVID-19 cases, our team had to use the resources that were available at home. Through platforms such as Google Meet and Messenger, we were able to share ideas and delegate tasks with little to no interruptions. Our team all has access to laptops and internet connection, therefore it was not a challenge to communicate with one another. Though at times there were minimal obstacles, like short disconnections and lag, we were able to push through and work on our project as a team.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

There were times our team had a conflict in schedule. Since a lot of our team members also have other commitments to attend to, it was not always convenient for us to meet all the time, but we still made sure to get our tasks done. Aside from this, it would have been easier to meet with one another face to face, but we were able to adjust to this situation and finish the project with ease.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

This project taught us lessons that we can bring with us even when we are no longer students. We sharpen our skills, teamwork, communication, and so much more, and this is something that will greatly benefit us as we grow older.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The overall objective of our participation in this competition was to make sure that our focus will be able to transition from what goes into the education system, to what comes out of it. This objective would not be reached without the advantage of sharpening our skills through this project. We aim to create a website that is informative, original, interactive, and eye-catching. More specifically, we not just aim to reach the standard of good research and good design, but also the standard of bringing these learnings beyond the classroom. This standard will help us come out of this project with life-long lessons.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Our team used a total of 12 computer set-ups (1 for each team member), 1 telephone, and 6 computer software. These tools made the process of finishing our project smoother and more efficient. Through these different platforms, we had better access to many different resources that helped in the completion of our project.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In a sense, we portrayed ourselves as ambassadors for Muntinlupa. Since the Barangays in Muntinlupa are elaborated on in this project, this essentially makes up the entirety of Muntinlupa. We have presented ourselves to be the spokesperson of the Emerald City.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We firmly believe that our project will be of great impact to other people. As we have stated all throughout our project narrative, our eyes were opened to how our community works. We were not just able to see the beauty in each barangay, but we saw the problems that are being faced by members in our community everyday, and we aim to advocate to fill these gaps, especially as the youth of this city.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

During the development of our website, we coordinated with the leaders of each barangay and Museo ng Muntinlupa which allowed us to gather more accurate and factual information regarding our website. The information found on the internet was lacking so we reached out to the leaders of each barangay and were able to acquire a sufficient amount of data and information. With their help and support, we were able to provide the necessary information needed to complete our website.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We believe that cyberfair allows us, students, to explore a broad spectrum of applications that will be beneficial to us in the future. It does help us strengthen our abilities in terms of utilizing various technological platforms. Despite the difficult circumstances in which we all find ourselves and the challenges we encounter, we put up our best effort in the creation of our website. Throughout our journey in making our webpage for the competition, advancement in technology turned out to be an effective medium to meet specific challenges. As the saying goes, 'motivation is the most significant predictor of success'.
