1. Description of Our Community

The main purpose of our work is to let more people understand Chinese music in Miaoli. Because of the progress of the times, the popular music styles have changed. Many people gradually stopped listening to traditional Chinese music. We have been familiar with the history, timbre, and the musical instruments in Miaoli. We hope that through this work, more people can understand the characteristics of the Chinese music in Miaoli.

2. Summary of Our Project

In the 21st century, the development of art and culture is an important indicator for determining a high-quality city. With the help of local industries, we have endeavored to bring the development of the Chinese music in Miaoli County to the international stage.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

In the process of making this page, our team encountered a lot of difficulties and challenges. The first challenge was to decide who to be involved in the program. At first, some people refused, but after the teacher's encouragement, a few more joined, solving the problem of insufficient members. Then, deciding the topic is also a big challenge. After our repetitious discussion and with the teacher's suggestions, we finally decided to introduce the local music promoter in Miaoli - Chun-Ping Lee. Also, it was a challenge to assign work fairly among team members. Luckily, after proper planning and numerous discussions, the work was finally completed.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

In Taiwan, the public has gradually forgotten traditional Chinese music, and has gradually been attracted to Western music. In this competition, through interviews and books, and under the guidance of Mr. Chun-Ping Lee, who appreciated the development of local music, we have a deeper understanding of the traditional Chinese musical instrument system. We hope that our web page will allow the public to explore, and understand traditional Chinese music again.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We worked together to do each task. At first, we contacted Chun-Ping Lee by phone. Then, we began to discuss the content of the interview, and film shooting methods. We tried to avoid copyright infringement. In the interview, when the teacher told us that she has been promoting the development of the local music for several years, we learned that sticking to one thing may slowly change the things around you because of your persistence. We started making our web pages by teaching Xara in our professional classes, and we also completed the translation of web-related content with the help of our English teacher. In the meantime, we needed to cope with the pressure from endless quizzes and exams, which helped us to learn to better manage time.

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We used search engines to look for the materials. we needed, and Microsoft Word was used to organize the content, which then was put into Xara's pages. The use of both Switch Book and the drawing board helped us to draw various illustrations of the instruments. Then the use of some applications enabled us to place the pictures in all parts of the web page. The recording tool was also used to make the content more clearly recorded during the access process.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In order to complete this research, we first used communication software to contact Mr. Lee and asked if he would like to be the ambassador of our project. Then, we were lucky enough to have the chance to interview him. In the course of the interview, we talked about the ideas and expectations for the project. Mr. Lee also shared with us many stories. Mr. Lee was impressed with the questions we raised, and with his guidance and help, the web page was finally completed.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

In Miaoli, art has not been popular among local people, and many people think that teaching music cannot help make a living, so they do not agree with the children to learn music. We are aware of the difficulties in the development of the national music in Miaoli, and decided to change the situation. We believe people of all ages can learn the traditional Chinese music. We also found that local ethnic orchestras have gradually been established in the community, and will be performing in various parts in Taiwan. The artistic atmosphere from Miaoli to other parts of Taiwan seems to have slowly taken shape.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

At first, only one member of the group understood the national music, and had participated in various competitions; others were not familiar with, or even did not understand it. We just wanted to do a good job of the web page, but did not expect to achieve anything with this project. However, the music, especially the melodious sound of the wind, helps us see the beauty of the traditional Chinese music. We hope that by introducing the local orchestras, we can arouse public interest and get the community to be involved in this field, so that the local people can have a better understanding of their local culture.
