Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Taiwan is a Pacific island with beautiful mountains and rivers. It is in a special geographical location located at the junction of the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate. Xindian Mountain has beautiful scenery and a wide field of vision. Our school is located in the mountains, through extensive interactions with nature, students appreciate the beauty of it. Taiwan's mountains have a long history. From the provision of the daily needs of the aborigines and then to the development of mountaineering experience, the mountains and forests are rich in resources. Later, after industrial development, wood became a large export commodity, helping Taiwan's economic and trade development. Now, the mountains are a place for rest, providing the opportunity for people to live along with nature. Students in our school have a certain understanding of mountain areas. The combination of diverse courses and local education has stimulated our curiosity to learn about mountains. Therefore, through this project, we hope to help more people understand the beauty and the life of Taiwan's mountains.

2. Summary of Our Project

The current 108 syllabus in Taiwan promotes school-based curriculum and cross-disciplinary activities. Our school combines a variety of courses, breaks away from the traditional courses, promote cross-disciplinary education, and learns through personal experience. The elite activities are a major curriculum of the school. Through the special mountains and lakes of Taiwan, activities are designed for different ages. The nature of Taiwan is of great significance to the people of Taiwan. Nature not only provides rest but also supports the economy. Therefore, the elite courses are best known for their hiking activities. Our school combine humanities and sports and use actual activities and personal experience to educate the students the three main principal of hiking- clean, quiet and respectful. Since this thematic team has all experienced mountaineering training, the team decided to promote mountaineering-related knowledge. Through Dr. Wang Shihao's knowledge and experience of the mountains, we will discuss how to enjoy the beauty of the mountains without having to worry about the potential crisis of mountain climbing.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Since most of the team members are participating for the first time in the International Cyberfair, we are not familiar with the process of creating the project. Therefore, among the team, two members with experience in participating took the role of president and vice president. However, we encountered various problems during the competition. The main issue was the team’s distribution of work, we face difficulties in cooperating in the most efficient way. Later, with the guidance of the teachers, we were able to better organize our work and produce better work. Our team not only encountered problems in teamwork but also faced bottlenecks in individual work of website creation, questionnaire analysis, and video production. The person in charge of website installation has no experience in setting up a website. The progress starts from zero, taking him months to finalize the website. The questionnaire analysis was also troublesome because some respondents submitted invalid data, causing difficulties in creating the charts of the data. When creating the video of the interview of Dr. Wang, he spoke too fast, which caused some words to be vague. Therefore, the student in charge of editing and submitting the video took three weeks to edit and add in subtitles. The difficulties and hardships during the competition, although they brought great challenges to the team members, cultivated a tacit team and a strong bond between each team member.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

In this Cyberfair project, the team researched Dr. Wang, including his background story, his motivation, his job and career, and his goals. Through the interview of Dr. Wang and the questionnaire, the members of the team collected credible data to include in the website created.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The CyberFair project addresses the knowledge of mountain climbing safety, related to our school’s elite program, mountain climbing (Xue Mountain, Hehuan Mountain). The students learned about the knowledge of creating a website, putting together an interview, and working together as a team to be more efficient and to urge each other to produce the most out of each person. The team used the internet to research online for information to help them better understand details about the project. In addition, the members found the importance of being aware of our social and environmental issues. With the help of the Internet, contacting with each member of the team became faster and easier, benefiting all students to be able to finish the project even during winter vacation.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

A CyberFair project often needs multiple materials to accomplish. During this project, students used 8 laptops of their own to conduct research of Dr. Wang on the internet. Online service Google Docs was used to organize the information and analyze data. The team used Google Forms to make and send surveys. To edit the oral interview video and add subtitles, the group used Minitools Movie Maker and Arctime Pro recommended by Youtubers after doing research. Finally, the team used visual studio code and the school server to set up websites. In addition, the video filmer used an iPhone to record the interview process, during video sending some problem occurred so we used iTools 3 to move the video from an iPhone to PC. iPhone apps like notes and camera were also used. To know more about Dr. Wang and his experiences, we bought his book 'It's not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves'. At last, there are several online news webs that has reports of Dr. Wang which influences us. In sum, laptops played an important role in this project due to its convenience. The computers are also the most helpful and valuable tool since we could search for data online, use it to record information and do most of our work.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In order to complete the research, the students conducted an oral interview with Dr. Wang. Most of the students knew Dr. Wang through his companion of the school’s elite program. Therefore, the students started by scheduling a meeting when Dr. Wang came to our school to lecture. One afternoon, the students acted as ambassadors and represent the school to conduct the interview. Through the interview, Dr. Wang shared his personal experiences and stories, which was valuable to the students for their research and website. Dr. Wang shared his motivation and reason for him participating in mountain medical industry. Dr. Wang was impressed by the outstanding performances and well-prepared questions the students came up with because his son is also the same age as most of the team members. Therefore, Dr. Wang was fascinated by the team and was willing to share more information and anecdotes for our research.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

There are several impacts of our project on not just our community but the society. Our CyberFair project teaches people about basic hiking information, we also try to use this opportunity to make propaganda of the information to a country-wide level. During a short period of time, I do not think our project will make a difference. However, through time, I do think the information we collect could benefit the safety of hikers. Student’s parents have seen the web page and thought the web visual design was advanced. A parent stated that the web delivered new knowledge to her, now she knows more about hiking. Therefore, knowing there are PACs on the mountain, she is no longer scared of climbing a high altitude mountain. Kang Chiao students have climbed at least one mountain that is 3000m above sea level, but they still learned a lot after reading through the website and watching the vocal interviewing video. A student said that he did not know Dr. Wang is such an important character in Taiwan mountain medical industry, he finally understands why the mountain guide measured students’ oxygen level while they were hiking. In addition, we received positive feedback from students, teachers, and parents. Thanks to CyberFair, it gives us an opportunity to share more knowledge with people.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Throughout the process, we received a lot of help from school teachers and Dr. Wang. They gave the team beneficial suggestions. For instance, the students didn’t know how to set up a website. Therefore, the school’s computer teacher walks the student step by step through the process of setting up the website. He was patient and helped the team solve multiple issues. Helping the team to finish the project in time and resolve any possible problems. In addition, we thank Dr. Wang for his help. Dr. Wang is a busy doctor, he has his own clinic to run. However, he managed to find time and accepted our interview. Throughout the interview, he answered our questions, taught us knowledge of how to be safe while climbing mountains. These knowledge can also benefit the people who visit our website, which we hope to help reduce the number of mountain climbing injuries.
