1. Description of Our Community
From the moment that Steve Jobs invented computer, the world is destined to be changed. Computer is a tool that can help us to deliver messages and enable everyone to learn more. We hope to use computer to preserve the traditional culture. Some people consider the ancient culture useless, for the world is changing rapidly and we need to keep moving forward. However, this concept is untrue. Is the traditional culture useless? There is wisdom in the ancient history and culture. Advanced knowledge is based on ancient cultures. By looking into traditional cultures, we will gain deeper understanding of the modern cultures. To study traditional local cultures, our school established the cyber-fair club. The original intention of establishing the club is to learn more about the stories of our community and hometown, and to provide the information for everyone through the internet.
2. Summary of Our Project
We’ve been staying in Linkou Campus of Kang Chiao International School since the school was established two years ago. From the beginning, the school has upheld the belief of “Broadening students’ international views while setting foothold in Taiwan”, devoting to cultivate us as world citizens with social concern. Keeping this idea in mind, we hope that through our research, students who came to Kang Chiao from all places can gain more knowledge about Linkou and build deeper attachment to this place in the early stage of the establishment of the school. So, the club members decided to choose an over-a-hundred-year-old temple — Zhu-Lin-Shan Guanyin Temple—as our research subject. (The literal meaning of Zhu-Lin-Shan is “bamboo forest mountain”) We’ve been staying in Linkou Campus of Kang Chiao International School since the school was established two years ago. 3. Our Computer and Internet Access
A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%
B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6
C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection
D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6
E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):
Currently, our school provides us with an adequate e-learning environment. Not only do we have two well-equipped computer labs available for our use, but each teacher is also provided with a desktop computer for his or her personal use. In addition, there is Wi-Fi throughout the entire school. The students who participated in this year have 5th and 6th grades. They all take information courses and use chromebooks in this project. Exchange data with each other through Google Drive.
4. Problems We Had To Overcome
We looked up some second hand information about this subject, organized the data and raised questions based on the content that the data lacked of. Then, we started to assign work. This is an important step., Since information about Zhu-Lin-Shan Temple includes various categories such as the history, architecture and festivals, collecting these data required collaboration. Finally, we entered the interview stage, where many locals in Linkou were interviewed. Conducting interview is crucial, for it can help us to know more about Zhu-Lin-Shan Temple, and get a picture of people’s knowledge about the temple.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?
In the course of cyber fair, we learned that research methods can be qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative research involves doing interviews or gaining in-depth knowledge about a certain subject. Quantitative research methods include using survey to conduct large scale investigations. In the class, we first took a look at the internet pages made by past members of the cyber fair, and tried to use mind maps to grasp the research subject. Then, starting from the eight themes of cyber fair, we tried to come up with subjects related to Linkou Kang Chiao community, making “Zhu-Lin-Shan Guanyin Temple” as the final subject. We looked up some second hand information about this subject, organized the data and raised questions based on the content that the data lacked of. Then, we started to assign work.
