Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Kaohsiung is one of the most prosperous cities in Taiwan. To become such a flourishing city, a substantial developing proposition should and had been well prepared. Dating back to the 1960s, our government promoted an export policy, which encouraged factories to export their products to avoid product overflow the domestic market. Concurrently, Kaohsiung’s industry took off successfully. However, the more thriving our industry is, the more pollution we create. Air pollution has now become the most severe pollution in Kaohsiung. Initially, it only influenced people who have sensitive or allergic physiques. Nonetheless, when it comes to winter, air pollution would be so serious that sometimes it feels like a mist has surrounded the whole city and the outline of buildings became indistinct. The issue of air pollution should not be ignored, as it calls for great attention from everyone of us.

2. Summary of Our Project

Our theme is “Air Pollution”. We provide plenty of objective data related to the issue. Not only did we survey a poll on the citizens’ perspective of air pollution, but we also collected and organized various information from government branches and non-governmental institutions. Our goal was to build a reliable information platform and present our true opinions against this environmental issue.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:none

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:not sure

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Learning to use the Internet is already an indispensable skill in modern society. If we don’t have it, we will Inconvenient In the Society of the future. Developed over a long time,The Internet will bring more aspects of use. The internet has become inseparable from our lives. It's almost impossible not to use the Internet for a day. A perfect internet will be able to support more things.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

In the process of working on the project, we have encountered some difficulties. The first one was technical issues like typing computer code. Computer code is the root of our website since any tiny bug might devastate it, no mistake is allowed. Every time we came into this kind of situation, we discuss the problem together, look it up on the internet, or ask teachers for help. Second, it was the translation that kept bothering us. After collecting information in Chinese, we have to translate them into English to set the website's English version. It was a tough task for us since our English level is quite worrying and the content was so massive that it was hard to organize and arrange in a foreign language. We took advice from English teachers, proofreading data over and over again to assure accuracy. Third, we lack time for discussion. The only ration time we got was lunch break. We focused on every meeting we had aiming to offer high efficiency, concentrating on our tasks to do more things in a limited time. We practically realized the significance of time management in this extraordinary event.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

This project is not only a contest but also a big challenge for us. With all the effort we dedicated in, we sincerely hope to caught more attention to the air pollution issue.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our school, National Feng-Shan Senior High School, emphasizes international perspective expansion. This project is especially the best method to broaden our horizons. From material seeking to web page designing, we have collected many domestic and foreign information and the opinions of people from different countries. In this case, we learned how to examine things from a different point of view. However, apart from expanding the global view, we have also dealt with group work issues. While working on the project, our team has gradually established consensus through continuous communication and assistance from each other. During our team cooperation, we learned that listening to everyone's opinions patiently is a vital element to promote group cohesiveness.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We have learned many technical skills, including web design, information searching, and material accuracy assuring. These are the new areas that we have not experienced before. When we encountered difficulties, we often looked them up on the Internet. Therefore, seven computers were used while working on the website. Additionally, when it comes to holidays, we usually contacted with each other by using social media to complete online discussion.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

The students made a Google form to survey public opinions by giving the form to our classmates, teachers, friends, and other citizens in our community. They realized their thoughts and integrated them into the project.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The purpose of building this website is to raise public awareness against air pollution. Although we only introduced the air pollution in Koashiung, environmental issues are always related to everyone around the world. Once our environment and ecosystem lose their balance, it would be us that will suffer from the revenge of nature. Therefore, by setting this website, we sincerely wish to let people know more about air pollution, and lead a further discussion of human beings' exploitation of the earth. Seeking solutions to environmental issues would be necessary to protect our planet.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Our school's older schoolmates who had attended this contest before have been given us advice since the very first day. Also, over one hundred people answered the Google form we did for investigation, which provides us materials for the project. Without these people, our website wouldn't be complete.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

During the project, we understood more about Kaohsiung's environmental issues and actions we could do to prevent it from getting worse. Techniques for Organizing information had also been improved.
