Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Tamsui has been a general name of a place and it refers to the village constructed along Tamsui River Basin. It is located at north coast of the mouth of Tamsui River in northwest of Taiwan. It is between Datun Mountain and Tamsui River and the old name was “Huwei” translated from Ketagalan language. The etymology is “Hobe” which means river mouth. In Tamsui near the mouth of river, there is not only the popular and crowded old street and the landscape with extensive view, but also the Cloud Gate Theatre with cultural characteristics. It is the first creative park of performance art in Chinese world and is the significant cultural landscape of Tamsui.

2. Summary of Our Project

Everything is difficult at the beginning! “A good start is half done”. Thus, we spent plenty of time when developing the topic! We brainstormed to find an organization which represented Taiwan the most. Finally, we all agreed that “Cloud Gate Dance Theatre” is the best choice! In addition, this year is significant for “Cloud Gate Dance Theatre”. At the end of this year, Mr. Lin Hwai-min who has founded “Cloud Gate Dance Theatre” for 46 years will be retired. Mr. Cheng Tsung-lung of “Cloud Gate 2” will succeed Mr. Lin Hwai-min as the artistic director.

Data processing of the members: We sent the files by Gmail to share and reorganize research data. By USB, we could manage data in school or at home or discuss the related content by video meetings of cell phones.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

In the period of studying Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, we encountered various obstacles. The most significant difficulty was time. We were in the first year of senior high school and we were always busy. We could work until midnight for the homework. In the busy study life, we should manage clubs, extracurricular activities and competition and we were even occupied on the weekend. Thus, it was extremely difficult to arrange the time and we realized the importance of time management.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

After studying well-known Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, we recognized the cooperation of the dance troupe on the stage. Mr. Lin Hwai-min persists in his dream. The splendid performance is the result of the dancers’ time and efforts. The impressive pieces are the creators’ hard work and the essence of combination of modern elements and traditional culture. The surprising performance for the audiences is the teamwork of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre!

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We collected and read related information by different groups and planned the subjects and designed the questions. In the interview, we not only obtained oral expression skill, but also enhanced logic thinking. After accomplishing the activities, we filled in meeting records and reports of progress. We transformed our acquisition in words which enhanced our writing competence. In Cyberfair project, we made progress in competence of listening, speaking, reading, writing and generalization in Chinese learning.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Cloud Gate Dance Theatre combines Asian mythology, folk custom and modern movement and it re-interprets the culture and history of Taiwan. It introduces art performance to the campuses and communities around Taiwan. It is devoted to social concern and support. After natural disasters, it actively participated in tour of public performance for fund raising to reconstruct the disaster areas and society. Cloud Gate creates the dance which depicts the Taiwanese’s unique experience in Chinese and Asian stories. With the guidance of Mr. Lin Hwai-min, it creates internationally well-known style of Cloud Gate.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Performance of an art performance troupe can not only purify but also change people. At the 25th anniversary, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre founded Cloud Gate Dance School. From 3 to 88 years old, every week, more than ten thousand families enjoy the physical rhythm in Cloud Gate Dance School and they learn to listen to the voice of bodies and freely have dialogues with themselves. Cloud Gate Dance Theatre expects everyone to perceive and learn by physical rhythm. Children’s world will be healthier and wider and everyone can experience health, well-being and growth.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Ms. Ko Wan-chun and Mr. Lin Chia-Liang are experienced dancers of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre. Ms. Ko Wan-chun was selected as seed dancer of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre in 2004 and she participated in many important works of Mr. Lin Hwai-min and was the head dancer in Dust, Pine Smoke, Water Moon, etc. She will leave Cloud Gate with Mr. Lin Hwai-min this year. Ms. Ko, Wan-chun said, “the days in Cloud Gate are my cultivation.” Mr. Lin Chia-Liang played Xu Xian in Legend of the White Snake, Wei Shou in Legacy and he showed solo dance of praying in Songs of the Wanderers, the works of Mr. Lin Hwai-min. Mr. Lin Chia-Liang acknowledge Cloud Gate which showed him the world. He thus discovered his inner world. According to two teachers, Mr. Lin Hwai-min was exteremely strict; however, he took care of the dancers’ physical and mental states. Thus, Cloud Gate dancers support each other as a family!

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Cloud Gate Dance Theatre combines western and eastern dance. Based on history and culture, it constantly explores the possibility of Chinese culture and self-identification of Taiwan. Thus, Cloud Gate introduces the culture of Taiwan to the world. In addition, they approach the countryside to allow more Taiwanese people to watch their performance. Noticeably, Cloud Gate has been persistent for 40 years. In addition, they stimulate people’s national value by dance and enhance the sense of belonging. Their contribution to the society or individuals is significant.
