1. Description of Our Community
Since the 14th century, Chinese people settled in Taiwan and brought their own culture. Due to foreign invasions, the Taiwanese gradually developed their own methods of self-defense, which then evolved into local martial arts, or 'wushu'. After the end of World War II, the KMT retreated to Taiwan, bringing with them a large slice of traditional Chinese culture. As a result, many martial arts schools in the north and south of China exchanged and integrated with the original styles in Taiwan. Even today, Taiwanese wushu still retains many traits of mainland Chinese martial arts. Martial arts was originally called the 'national art' when the KMT came to Taiwan, and this term is still used today.
2. Summary of Our Project
Martial arts was the earliest tactic for people in China to protect their native land. After generations of evolution, it gradually formed the martial arts familiar to us today. For this competition, we interviewed students, teachers, parents in the school, and professionals of the Martial Arts Association in order to learn about the culture and popularity of Taiwanese martial arts. Furthermore, we read books and created a web page to introduce the history and cultural aspects of Chinese martial arts to the world through the Internet. By gathering information about the myriad of martial arts schools all over China, we envision a greater future for this beautiful form of art. We wish to unite all the different factions of Chinese martial arts with one common element -- the Chinese spirit of perseverance. The Chinese have powered through countless trials of history, be them in the form of internal rebellion or external invasion, without succumbing to the tumult that has brought down so many great empires before us. And we think that there is nothing that can better represent the unyielding Chinese spirit than our martial arts. With fists that strike with the ferocity of a tiger and kicks that land with the beauty of a perching crane, we have halted every prospect of ruin in its tracks and prospered until today. It is our firm belief that despite the myriad of different schools that have branched out, we are able to find unity in diversity. We wish to spread the beauty of Chinese martial arts to the world.
3. Our Computer and Internet Access
A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%
B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1
C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection
D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6
E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):
We have two computer classrooms with a total of 100 computers and two optical fiber networks at school. We usually handle most of the work during lunch break, nighttime study hall and holidays. After class time, members can also work from home, so we can use the same email, Facebook, Line and other media to continue researching.
4. Problems We Had To Overcome
During the process of making the webpages due to the pressure of schoolwork and going to cram school after school, we reached a consensus after discussion, we sacrificed the study time at night and lunch break time to do this project, discuss and design the webpage in the computer classroom. This made us exhausted in the afternoon classes, so how to make appropriate deployment between studying and Cyberfair is a big challenge. Furthermore, our topic: martial arts is too broad, we were confused what to focus on at first, later we chose to focus on Chinese and school-related martial arts. We also had a problem on gathering information, since information online and in books are sometimes not organized, we had to read through everything in order to find the correct information.
5. Our Project Sound Bite
In order to preserve endangered Taiwanese culture, we promote them to the world. Moreover, learning public speaking and skills to work with others can help us on college applications.
