Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The Xihu Market is 10 minutes walk from our school. Many of our parents has work there. It is closely related to our school and our lives. The school is also developing curriculum based on the market, starting to know about fruits and vegetables, trading and how it has influence on our lives, our neighbors and the market in Taiwan.

2. Summary of Our Project

We met many people and did many things throughout the project. We did interviews, bargain with vendors, bought many many vegetables.

During two of the fundraising events, we understand it is very difficult to sell things. We learn how to persuade people to help out with our charity work and many people are touched with our conduct.

We are amazed what work we can accomplish through hard work and teamwork. Many of the teachers and parents helped us with our activities, and we really thankful.

During one of the time when we want to buy vegetables to sell, some of the vendors donate their vegetable to us, because we told them the purpose of our act. We are so touched by their selfless act.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:none

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

We have very well connected network as it's provided each schools in Changhua County has Internet. As from this year, 2019, beside from the computer classroom, we have extra 3 iPads where the students are able to access for useful tools during the project.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1.Lack of learning experience and stimuli: As our town in not a central area and even though it’s not as poor as some of the places in rural area, the school lacks funds and unable to provide more for the students. 2. Setting up interview with the head of the Xihu Fruit and Vegetable Market Company and visiting the Market is problematic: The managers are very busy, so finding a common time for our students and the people concerned is difficult. Also the market is most busy before day break, so when we visit, many of the vendors have already left. ?3. Data collection and network problem: students do not have computer or Internet access at home, so most of the work need to be done during school time, or extra time spent coming to the school during the weekend. Many has difficulty learning to do Internet research and building web pages. 4. Insufficient experience in interviews: Students lack of experience in conducting interviews, but most of the time the people we interviewed are really nice to the our students.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Participating in the CyberFair is a brand new experience for both our students and teachers. We learn new knowledge outside the classroom, and we also know more about the Xihu Market. We also understand that it is not easy to operate a company. We encountered many difficulties in data collection, building webpage and interviews, etc. This project has offered all of us an unforgettable experience.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

The role of the students in this Project is diversed: 1 : Learners: Through interviews and data collection with the director and general manager of Xihu Fruit and Vegetable Market Company, the students have a full understanding of the business history and philosophy of the Xihu Market, and understand the importance of the Market Company to the farmers in the Changhua area. And through this project the teachers and students learn about the Market. 2: Promoters: In addition, the group visited the Xihu Market several times during the research process and collected relevant information from various aspects. After discussion and analysis and actual selling the vegetables, we act as the ambassadors to promote the market to people outside the town. 3: Tech Savvy: During the course of the research, the research team use the Internet to search for information, use computer software for web design, learn through the office document processing and integration, the website of the CyberFair website system, photo and film shooting and other information.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

In the beginning, students are not motivated to look into the Xihu Market. Some of the feedback that students have given are heartfelt that we think as teachers the result of the project are efforts and time well spent. After the fundraising events, many of the students understand how difficult it is to make a living selling their own produce.

Students understand growing vegetables are a tough job, because selling a big cabbage, we only get NT$10. Imagine the effort one have to put in during the growing process.

The students shared the project with their fellow classmates, and are awed to the efforts the participants have put in.

Many parents give encouragements to the project through helping out with our fundraising events and giving donations.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

In this research activity, we mobilized a considerable amount of manpower. In addition to the students, there were also directors of the school and the help of the teachers, so that the research team could successfully complete the research. Parents and local people support and encourage the research team, so that the group has more confidence and motivation to complete the research project. Through this research, the relationship between teachers and students is deeper.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Nothing is impossible, it is only when we are unwilling to do it! Xihu Market Company has promoted the development of the Xihu area, solved the problem of farmers' transportation, and made the surrounding towns more convenient and increased their income. Because they insist on fairness, justice and openness, farmers can safely transport fruits and vegetables to the Xihu Market for sale. They cooperate with government policies to implement various measures, they can help farmers through various difficulties. Through out of time, many parties help to make the development of Xihu Market better and more perfect.

We learn the management principles of Xihu Market, its diversified development and so much more.
