Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

'Tainan is a place for people to dream, work, love, get married, and spend leisure time.' - Ye Shitao. Tainan is the oldest city in Taiwan. With its time-honor 300-year history, the city is well woven into the fabric of rich culture and interesting anecdotes. Details hidden inside the corners of streets, they yield the footprints left behind by ancestors as well as those precious, little stories being passed down generation by generation. A Temple in 3 Steps And A God within 5 Strides Owingto unique geographic backgrounds, Tainan was the financial hub of Taiwan in earlier times, harboring many cargo ships. Ever since being colonized by the Dutch, it set up a base for Tainan’s multicultural mix and then impacted the religions and customs from crowds of diversity here.Rituals And Prayers for Well-Being Is Characteristic of Local Customs In Tainan Tainan, “the Cultural Capital”, is pretty full of temples and ceremonies of variety and excitement. Old Restaurants of Gourmet Snacking Used to Be Like Mobil Museums of Delicacies Gourmet snacking in Tainan is originated from where people crowdedly got together, like streets around temples, night markets, and so on. In earlier days, those foods were sold by peddlers or with stalls on streets while nowadays most of them are transformed into major historical restaurants famous for gourmet snacking. Do not hesitate to come taste those Iconic gourmet snacking and to go on a journey rich of culture, culinary, and history of Tainan.

2. Summary of Our Project

The Grandmaster of plaque’s craft in Tainan, Mr. Huang Yao-Ru. Mr. Huang Yao-Ru had renovated the most famous four plaques in Tainan. There is special significance of plaque to the Chinese,for example, The temple events, and new buildings. He is eighty-six years old now, but still works everyday.His work experience has been 63 years. There are many processes for making a plaque. First,write the calligraphy of large and small characters. And then choose the suitable wood. The arrange the layout is also a matter of learning . Finally, get it into shape,paint and gild. The master’s twisted hand is covered with scars, which is caused by his carvings twisted over the years. From the interview,we learn the craft of plaque. What the most valuable thing is that we learn from Mr. Huang’s optimistic lifestyle. To be succeed, no pain no gain. Action speaks louder than words. In recent years,due to the development of computer technology , the craft of plaque fades away .Young people don’t want to learn the craft. So we need more people to engage in this tradition.We hope his craft could be substained.

The network of our school is a large Tainan optical fiber network technology, the bandwidth of 300M connection environment. Computer classrooms have 40 computers are available online, other devices have scanners for student scanning information, and laser printers for printing. Classrooms, each class has a computer with Internet access, allowing students to use, and the computer classroom is also available to each team a laptop. In terms of data storage and access, a classroom in the NAS classroom of the computer classroom allows students to temporarily save a large amount of information and set up an ubuntu server for each student to do webpage exercises, and also serve as a web space for students to exchange information. Ten students in the Wonder Group have computers at home, all available online. As a result, students can also use their home computers to search for information in addition to online search during their school days.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We have many difficult problems , such as: 1.Time:Our research object is an artist who works very hard everyday.He is always very busy. So it is difficult to find a suitable time to meeting with him.But we still find ways to interview him on Sunday. 2.Language: Mr. Huang uses native language to communicate. Some of our members can not understand what he say. So we try to use Mandarin to talk , and try our best to speak as slowly as possible. 3.Computer skills: We have insufficient computer skills. So We practice in the computer classroom at noon(12:45~13:40) during Monday to Friday , teachers also teach us computer skills by holiday. We spent three months studying enrichment in thematic studies and computer skills. During the winter vacation this year, apart from the New Year holidays, we spent most of our school days trying our best to end the holiday in the old calendar year. Report to the school, everyone together to collect information, division of labor in their own website.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Normally we all sit in class and inevitably flow into ' talk about stratagems on paper -- empty talk.'In the beginning, we feel that the common plaque in our life is nothing remarkable.After this special study, we have an eye-opener about plaque.We have a deep understanding of the national treasure master's outlook on life and craftsmanship, so that we have a little more respect for traditional art workers. In our hands, after the piece of work, I also deeply understand that it is so simple and simple to say than just mouth. ... 'Actions speak louder than words' and 'Just Do It 'should be our greatest experience. We are worrying and nervous about our report. Our teacher did several exercises to help us and always encourage us.'one minutes on the stage need ten years of practise off the stage 'understanding is also in our hearts ... 6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Cyberfair encourages students at all levels to explore local cultures and communities through the thematic study and teamwork and express what they have learned via the internet. Grade 1-9 Curriculum emphasizes humanity, integration, democratic literacy, local and international awareness, and life-long learning.This time we take the Grandmaster of plaque carving, Mr. Huang Yao-Ru as our research object. We hope that through the collection and production of thematic materials, and cultivate the life skill ability of students, such as drawing out plans, collecting information, interviewing and web page making skills, etc. A. language Learning: Through writing experiences and arranging the key points of the interview make our articles greatly increase their language ability to express themselves. Although there are often stage fright in the actual interview, after many times of practice, the courage is obviously enhanced and the students learn interview to pay attention to the skills. Through sharing the brief report in an the whole school and the class interview, we also can learn to express and share the ability. In addition, English writing is taught to make our English ability more solid. B. Arts and Humanities: When we learn the knowledge and application of plaque carving skills during the course of experience, can enhance our artistic ability and accomplishment such as feeling, imagination and creativity. C. Integrative activities: We learn how to plan, organize and practice information collection, problem discussion, actual visits and practical application of resources, and realize the spirit of respect, care and teamwork and laying the foundation for life-long learning ability. D. Science and Technology: During the study, we applied a wealth of information-based knowledge and kept a detailed record through mobile phones, digital cameras, computers, DV, and voice recorder to conduct research digital and learn how to make web pages.These are all the …

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We lack sufficient knowledge of the plaque carving.There is special significance of plaque to the Chinese, especially in Tainan.When walking on street , we can see the plaque on the temple and the old store. We want to introduce the Grandmaster of plaque’s craft in Tainan, Mr. Huang Yao-Ru by this special study. We also want to learn more about his craft works and creative ideas, and lead everyone to truly understand the plaque process.We do a briefing for classmates and school teachers in the class time .In addition to introducing the master of traditional crafts, we also learn from Mr. Huang’s optimistic lifestyle.After the activity, we put the result together on the website.Through the three elements of text, images and web pages, our Cornerkids Group becomes the community ambassador of plaque culture, so that more people can understand the beauty of Taiwan's plaque culture and the Grandmaster of plaque’s craft in Tainan, Mr. Huang Yao-Ru. !!!

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Participate in this special study, bring us different learning experience,such as: (a) Teamwork: In the past, we could all do homework very quickly, but in this special study different, we deeply understand the importance of cooperation and division of labor. It is impossible for so much information to be collected by one or two people at all. After conducting the thematic study of the Cyberfair, we have more thorough understanding of these traditional embroidery crafts. (b) Self break: Because of this research for a while, we also feel that our courage seems to have become much larger. We even came to courage to make presentations with so many people. And we are more able to discuss things with adults than we did before. (c) Planning and practice: The teacher also taught us to use the mind mapping method to think about what we did not think at first. However, with the progress of our project, data and itinerary more and more, we realized the merits of this thinking method and found that the mind map method is not only available to analyze can also be used to make plans, and finally to follow it to achieve. (d) Attitude and philosophy of life:From this experience, we have learned that we will harvest as long as we never give up. As the saying goes, “No pain, no gain.” I believe that our efforts will certainly be rewarded!

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Most of the words used in our topic are collected by the children who wrote down the interview process and their own feelings.About the pictures : the children or the instructor shot in the study process personally. In a large number of photos taken, we pick out the representative of the representative on the page. In addition, I would like to thank Professor Mr. Huang Yao-Ru and Mrs. Guo Shu-Juan for authorizing us to use the data of the entire research process. Mrs. Guo Shu-Juan also authorized our team to make reference to cite her facebook's picture(Link:FB???????) of the plaque when making the materials and we will label the source.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

In the process, we are full of admiration for Mr. Huang Yao-Ru who is 83 years old.After conducting research, there is a deeper understanding of the plaque process.In the process of the gold-plating process by personal experience, we also know more about the wisdom and customs of many predecessors.In particular, people’s devotion to religion and deity is manifested in all artifacts.We have a new perspective on the plaque in the temple and the plaque at the entrance of the store.What the most valuable thing is that we learn from Mr. Huang’s optimistic lifestyle and earnest manner.Mr. Huang also use the division of labor and cooperation to complete the plaque carving work. In fact, we feel Mr. Huang is a low-key man and his attitude towards work is worth learning.Mr. Huang Yao-Ru says that : I will still work until 100 years old, and I love my job very much! From work, I have a great sense of accomplishment!We get an inspiration: 'Being patient and interested in learning is definitely the only way to succeed.'For the society where all things require quick success and achievements, Mr. Huang Yao-Ru is really admirable.
