Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Radauti is a small city in the northern part of Romania. It has about 25000 citizens of different ethnicities, religions, cultures and political ideas. This region has been under many occupations, therefore these regions left a mark over these places. Not to be forgotten is the region where we live in: Bukovina. This region has its location in 3 countries: Romania, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova. Even so, this region is a like a whole and we have all bonded with each other. Near Radauti you can find the village Cacica. Cacica (Polish: Kaczyka) is a commune located in Suceava County, Romania. The beginnings of Cacica date back to the end of the 17th century, but it was not until 1782 when the emperor Joseph II ordered the search for salt in Bucovina. At the salt springs, small salt mines were created in a few places - among others in the valley called Cacica. The purest rock salt in the world (99.8% purity) was discovered here, at a depth of 28.5 m. In 1791, a big salt mine was opened. From now on, Cacica will have satisfied the salt demand for the whole of Bucovina. We chose this village because it offers a great diversity of architecture, which corresponds to the different ethnic groups that inhabit Cacica.

2. Summary of Our Project

The purpose of our project is to bring closer the people from our community and the tourists to the sacred life, the culture and to raise the appreciation for these places. We have to be aware that the evolution of population in this area had a great impact on the architecture, as every new ethnic group has brought along customs and traditions, its very specific architectural style. We tried to show little differences between the details that have changed with the passage of time. We would wish to show you the beauty of our area and to give you an opportunity to discover Bucovina just as it is. We decided to record this movie by using only a Canon EOS 1300D with two objectives: EF-S 18-55mm for mid range scenes and EF 50mm for close shots. We used Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2017 to trim, edit and color blend the videos and also to put the audio in place. This gave us an opportunity to make a great improvement in our editing skills, and aswell in the team building experience. For the animated part a graphic tablet was used. The tablet allowed us to transform our imagination into reality, as you feel no difference sketching with it, compared to drawing on paper. The character was drawn frame by frame in Adobe Flash. The program put together the vector graphics and turned it into an animated clip that was later added to the filmings.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Surprisingly, we did not have any problems: neither technical, nor organisational. That's because we had a great treatment in Cacica. We would like to thank them for that.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

This was a great experience, from which we had only good things to learn. We are certain that we will find out more after we submit the final project.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The project presents the multiculturalism for one particular village, Cacica. Therefore, it can be a good support content for a course in local history, or civic education. Also, Bucovina in particular has a great diversity of people. Our project could reveal some of the differences found in Cacica regarding different architectural styles. Thus, it can support not only the history courses, but also one particular drawing course.

On the other hand, this project helped us know each other's skills, how we work under a certain pressure, how we can manage some problems. It was also a team building experience, as we did not know each other before this project.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We had a meeting arranged with a local from Cacica, who acted as a guide: he showed us every house where we had shot, and also put us in contact with other locals. This was the main source from where we got our information. Other means of information were our relatives.

As for the technologies we used, we shot the movie with a Canon EOS 1300D with two objectives: EF-S 18-55mm for mid range scenes and EF 50mm for close shots. We used Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2017 to trim, edit and color blend the videos and also to put the audio in place. We had already everything bought (referring to the physical means of technology) and paid (referring to the software we used). Also, a tripod helped a lot, as it stabilized the image a lot. These were the most valuable tools that we used to create this short movie.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We started this project because of the multiculturalism of our zone. Our teacher had put us in contact with a local from the village of Cacica, and then, with his help, we found out lots of things. Every piece of information we gathered was received in person mostly. We visited 5 or 6 houses, and as he knew everyone in Cacica, it was very easy for us to find out the stories that every man or woman had to say. Many of them knew lots of details about the past generations which inhibited the houses before. For example, the house from minute 1:45 (from the YouTube video) has belonged to the firefighter's family from 1800's since nowadays. We were amazed to see that people are so open to visitors, as we had met them for the first time then.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The local that guided us through the village of Cacica has a function in the main hall, and he told us that this video could help them to make the zone more popular and more tourist-friendly. He found unique that we wanted a genie as the main character, as we could invent a wider backstory and thus making the video more appealing. Cacica is a beautiful village and because of its placement, there are many visitors there, especially during the summer, but most of them are Romanians. Few foreign tourists reach this village (it's true that in the past years, the tourism rate has increased), but he thought that by using our video, he could spread the word on the internet and therefore making the village more 'globally' known.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Thanks to our teacher who put us in contact with a certain local from Cacica village, he was the one who offered us the most important pieces of advice. He knew everyone in the village and made us a tour of some beautiful places in Cacica, including some houses and a church. The priest from the church had also told us the story of the church, as it's one from that specific area. Also the other locals were surprisingly friendly: they invited us in their houses, showed us the most beautiful folk costumes that we've ever seen (the costume from 2:20 it's 150 years old!). We want to thank them a lot for their hospitality!
