1. Description of Our Community
Taiwan, facing the Pacific Ocean to the east and the West Bank across the sea with Mainland China, is an island nestled among the largest ocean and the largest land in the world. Since the 16th century, it has become a region where all powerful powers fight for, such as Spain, the Netherlands, China and Japan due to the special geographic location and rich natural resources, so they want to be in on action. After ruled by several different colonial countries, Taiwan has a diverse-cultural pattern with European beliefs and crops from Spain and the Netherlands, traditional Chinese customs and religious culture, Japanese customs and values, so the arts also have different styles under the influence of different colonies. Gouache painting is one of them.
2. Summary of Our Project
The art of Taiwan is deeply affected by Japan during their occupation from 1895 to 1945. At that time, Taiwan’s economy and politics were in a more stable situation. Besides, education was promoted by Japanese government, so Taiwanese people were more largely exposed to arts. Therefore, Taiwanese art began to flourish and a large number of famous artists were born during the time. Among them, Mrs. Chen Chin, as the first female artist at a time of androcentrism, performed well. She was one of three Taiwanese whose paintings were displayed in the biggest art exhibition in Japan, alongside with other two male artists, Lin Yu-Shan and Ko Hsueh-Hu. She was good at gouache painting which was brought in by the Japanese. Her paintings were mostly devoted to ladies, families, scenery and flowers. Mrs. Chen-Chin passed away in 1998. We’ve interviewed her relatives and visited her private museum, and set up websites to introduce her. By doing this, we didn’t only preserve the ancient art, but we can feel the passion and concern from Mrs. Chen-Chin as well as cherish the very land we live on - Taiwan.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome
Some of the members have experienced in participating in this Cyberfair. Therefore, at the beginning, the teacher let us browse a large number of previous winning entries and look for the theme of the fair. In the following sessions, the teacher led the members to discuss the theme of Cyberfair and name of the titles. During the process of making the webpages due to the pressure of schoolwork and going to cram school after school, we reached a consensus after discussion, we sacrificed the study time at night and lunch break time to do this project, discuss and design the webpage in the computer classroom. This made us exhausted in the afternoon classes, so how to make appropriate deployment between studying and Cyberfair is a big challenge. The group members had interview experience before, but facing people who we were unfamiliar with, we would still be shy. Therefore, we divided our work, prepared our interview questions to let us get less nervous during the official interview. Throughout the process of making the webpages, webpage creation is the biggest challenge. Thanks to the teachers for helping us and guiding us during lunch break and study time at night in the computer classroom. We learned the skills of image processing software and webpage making software so that we have basic webpage design ability to create the webpages.
5. Our Project Sound Bite
In order to chase this era, I sprint in the rest of my life, I pressed my brush to move that day!
6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?
Literature: 1.Through the collecting and sorting of information to enhance our understanding and integrating of language. 2.Through the writing of webpage information and afterthought to enhance our expression and the ability to translate. Social studies: Discuss the Japanese occupation period painter’s influence to the development of Taiwan art history. IT education: Learn how to edit photos and to create webpages. Dialects education: To inherit the paintings of Taiwan during Japanese occupation period, to arouse the love of homeland. Arts and humanities: 1.Through the view and admire of paintings to foster appreciation of arts. 2.Learn the skills of painting gouache. 3.Learn how to design art and layout for the webpage. Integrative activities: 1.Preparation of the interview and to foster being polite. 2.Learn how to cooperate with team members and time arrangement

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.
We set up website to introduce Mrs. Chen Chin and gouache painting, which she was good at, towards the world. We presented our project to our classmates in art class at school. We also interviewed her coming generations at her private museum. In order to accomplish this project, we also contacted and talked to Yu-Chun Lin, Director of Taipei Fine Arts Museum, and Mrs. Yang from National Arts Council committee, how they thought and knew about the first female intellectuals to be educated under the new education system, and a pioneer in the development of Oriental art in Taiwan. She was one of the first Taiwanese artists to present works in the Taiwan Fine Arts Exhibition.
3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?
Through our report, we had made one hundred and twenty students in our school get a chance to know a traditional art – gouache painting, that widen their views of art, and know the first female artist of Taiwan, Chen Chin. People around the world learned gouache painting and know first female artist through our Web pages. We established some new working relationships with Taipei Fine Arts Museum, National Palace Museum, and National art council with our Web pages. Through our Web site, people know the gouache paintings of Chen Chin's spread and preserve at Taipei Fine Arts Museum, National Palace Museum, and Chen Chin's private museum in Taiwan.
4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?
We interviewed Mrs. Chen Chin’s family members, understood her life, visited her personal art studio, witnessed her paintings. We also visited Teacher Wang Chen Yi, she taught us how to paint gouache. Therefore, we learned about how to prepare the materials and the steps for gouache. We actually finished our own gouache artwork on the fan.
5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)
We are really happy and excited that we could join this International Cyber Fair Competition. During the Cyberfair, we had learned a myriad of knowledge about computer, the skills of interviewing, and the way of collecting and sorting information. The days that we worked together, we had a good grasp of the importance of teamwork and the division of labor. If we only depend on one person to finish everything is impossible, we had to help each other to conquer difficulties. Besides, we would like to thank our teachers for teaching us, so we could create this webpage. Joining this activity, member should arrange their time and be response for their work. Even though we had different ideas and cause us behind our work, after discussion, we learned how to express our ideas and accept others’ ideas with an open mind. After our hard working, we finished this project about one year, everyone was tired due to schoolwork plus running behind, however, we were happy for our accomplishments and learned a lot of things through this project. We wish we could have the chance to join this event in the future.
