1. Description of Our Community
Our school, located in the old downtown of Taichung City which borders the Central, North, and West Districts, is an old and famous elementary school. Our school is located in Central District of Taichung.The name of the city was created under Japanese rule, and became a major economic and cultural hub. It was called 'the Kyoto of Formosa' in Japanese era. In the 70-80's,This area is known as one of the fashion centers of Taichung city, particularly for young people, and as a major nightlife area. Because of its historical background, it is filled with many traditional shops and fill with atmosphere of exotic culture.This area represents the vitality and diversity.Through field trips, students can better understand their hometown and understand the current state of the society.Learn to respect differences and appreciate multiculturalism.
2. Summary of Our Project
Asean square(also called first square)is located in central district in Taichung.Beside the square is Taichung railway station. Every holiday, there are always many foreign workers here to leisure, party, shopping. You can also see many international backpackers sightseeing tours here.Here you can find Taiwan's traditional snack bars, handicraft shops, special architectures of the Japanese era, you can also taste the Southeast Asian-style meals, and buy Southeast Asian specialty products. From the study we found that the first plaza (Japan's first market) this place, the past is a gilt lot, and this area in the planning of the municipal government, hoping to create a multicultural district, but also to give migrant workers a good Leisure Field, changed its name to 'Asean Square' in 2016. After several visits we found that there are many traditional Taiwanese snacks, but also many Southeast Asian food, more monuments left over from the reign of Japan, Culturally diverse area. Although it was practical to use all the software we learned in IT class, we couldn't increase its efficiency. We're slow typewriters even though we're familiar with using computers; we spend a day processing a picture despite our creativity for the photos. Fortunately, all the classmates almost spare their time for our project. We even worked together with everyone's talents; for example, Min-Jun is good at picture software, and then he will focus on film-editing and perfection; Chao-shin and Jia-chi are fast typewriters and they took charge of paperwork. 4. Problems We Had To Overcome
Technical obstacles: Because our web pages are coding experience and skills are not good enough, making web pages and typesetting more difficult Research Experience: As we are working together in the fifth and sixth grades, three of our sixth grade students had experience in participating in the Cyber Expo last year. 5. Our Project Sound Bite
By way of participating in International Schools CyberFair, we believe that the greatest significance is to enable students, teachers, alumni and community to unite together and mutually understand that we are all living in the same community. Students can appreciate the characteristics of their hometown and understand the significance of the inheritance culture. Apart from being able to appreciate different cultures, they can identify themselves more and understand the role of the global citizen.
6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?
This research project combines with Taiwan Schools Cyberfair, Grades 1-9 curriculum, and school-based curriculum. Through this research project, students will show their deep concern about the community and life, and further take the responsibility to introduce Taiwanese domestic culture to the world. This will help broaden students' worldview and connect them with the globe. Along with Grades 1-9 curriculum and the curricular activities designed for advanced classes, students shall develop research skills and the 'ten core competences'. 1. Language Arts: to improve listening, speaking, reading, writing and integrate the four skills. 2. Mathematics: to develop the analytical skill of statistics. 3. Social Studies: to respect people, concern the society, and improve the ability for teamwork. 4. Science and Technology: to learn biological and medical knowledge and develop the skill of using information and technology. 5. Arts and Humanities: to develop the ability of beauty appreciation and creativity. 6. Integrative Activities: to enhance self-understanding and develop cooperative attitude for teamwork. 7. Creativity: to bring about students motivation for research and exploration through analyses and discussions 8. Guidance: to carry out self-regulation for each group and develop the ability to plan, organize, and execute for teamwork. 9. High-level Thinking Training: to develop cognitive, independent, and critical thinking through mental talks and interviews. 10. Problem-solving Skill: to hold discussions, do decision- making, make numerous attempts and corrections to solve the problems and difficulty in the research.
