Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The situation in Taiwan is thick and dense with population concentrated in the cities. In particular, the city of Taipei is even more serious. Urban expansion endanger the ecological environment, which makes us re-think urban development is not just starting from people, but to take environmental protection into account. Our research theme is based on sustainable development, and thinks about the crisis of today's earth, mankind and urban development. We hope this study will awaken people to cherish the Earth's resources, care for the environment and implement the concept of a sustainable environment.

2. Summary of Our Project

In order to meet the needs of life and develop economy, human beings ignore the importance of environment and seriously affect the ecology in the process of development. Once the ecological environment overloaded, perhaps it will never be restored, which means that our future life will face a serious test. Therefore, we must rethink how to abandon the unwise life and improper land development in the past, avoid re-destroying the natural ecological resources and maintain the balance between human life and the ecological environment. In recent years, more attention has been paid to environmental protection and sustainable development. How to make a city into a sustainable ecological city, is an important issue of urban development. Many countries have started to plan and develop eco-cities.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

A.Collection and collation of data After we determine the topic, we spent a lot of effort to find relevant information from internet and library.Because of too much relevant information, we put a lot of effort on assigning each person to read and finally discussed with the teacher. We had a lot of effort in data compilation. We organized the interview content, recorded respondents' thoughts and after finishing, we showed respondents draft for double check.Although we had to spend more time, but we thought we can make the whole case study more complete. B.Terminology Our project is mainly based on eco-cities, of which eco-city theory and related terminology make us feel more difficult. Therefore, we must first make efforts to read books, ask teachers and search the website before we can understand these terms one by one. C.Dfficulties When making web pages, we need to use a lot of software. To us, it’s hard.So we asked help from the teachers, and practice again and again. Finally, we all became more familiar on the page making and had a lot of confidence.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We have gained a lot of valuable experience and knowledge in this journey of learning, such as urban development, ecological issues, environmental protection and energy saving and so on. We encountered many difficulties in the research process, but we find ways to eliminate any obstacles and achieve our goals. This joy can not be described in words. Of course, in the process, we were helped by some kind-hearted and kind people, and we got a lot of encouragement and support from the teachers.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

A.Combine with environmental education curriculum: The purpose of this special study is to make everyone aware of the issue of environmental disasters and is closely related to everyone. For example, when a typhoon comes, flooding or earth-rock flow is always caused because of over-exploitation of the environment. And our green space is less and less, but instead of factories and buildings. In order to protect the ecological environment in which we live and reduce the global warming effect, we will focus on eco-friendly and energy-saving 'eco-cities' to awaken people to create a sustainable eco-planet. B.Combined with local education curriculum: The combination of local education courses We used Wednesday afternoon to do data collection and film, then edited the information and research result on a web page to share with people.Hope you can learn more about our home environment, and hope you guard our home with concrete actions. C.Combine nature and life sciences curriculum: The combination of nature and life science and technology courses Through science and technology tools - digital cameras, digital voice recorder, we gathered up the things we visited. At the same time, we also queried information through the internet, and transmitted our study and research progress reports on time to Internet.More importantly, we used all kinds of hardware and software tools which we have learned to make a web page to share what we learned. C.Math: In this study, the questionnaire design is one of the sources of our research. The questionnaire is classified and the number of each option is counted. The percentages are input into the computer to form a statistical chart, and finally the analysis and explanation are given.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We personally visited environmentalists, government officials and scholars and experts and other related personnel. We learned more about nuclear energy and environmental protection. Use the Internet to find relevant web page to collect the required information. When we visited, we took pictures and video. Use the scanner to do image processing and printer is used to reproduce the information circulated. Contact Interviews by telephone and fax. Storage, transfer photos and related information. Save relevant information to a PC without web connection. Through drawing image to make web content more lively and interesting.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

A.Visit According to the project, we personally interviewed scholar experts, government officials and private enterprises, and hope to learn more about eco-city and environmental protection and their opinions during the visit. B.Parental involvement Encourage parents to be part of us to participate in thematic studies. C.Community interview Through field visits and questionnaires, community residents are allowed to know the theme and purpose of our study. We hope that they will understand the community residents' views on the ecological environment and will publicize the concept of environmental protection and energy saving and the problems we are facing in the visit.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We think humans and the earth are living communities. However, today's human beings are over-exploiting land, consuming the resources of the earth and creating pollution for their own convenience. Not only endanger human health, but also bring the world a crisis. In the past, Taiwan was full of green mountains, green water and fields. With the continuous progress and prosperity of human civilization and the surging population, our beautiful island has started to transform from an agrarian society to a business community. However, the unbridled construction and development of the city have been sacrificed in return for the natural environment in our hometown. Over-concentration of population in urban areas will bring about some problems for the environment, but these problems can be solved if we can promptly re-awaken and adopt the appropriate policies and measures. Therefore, we hope that the future development of cities will not be based solely on people. Instead, we should also take the environment as the priority and allow human beings and the ecological environment to achieve balanced development and establish a sustainable ecological city.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We collected, read a lot of information, and the division of labor and mutual discussions, then organized the report step by step.Sources of information are from books, journals, the web, and the information provided by the visitor. We annotated references of sources and pictures on our web page.We also formally cited with provider consent.Thank people who provide us information. With your help, we finally make a great web page.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Eco-city is a complex project. To achieve the eco-city can not be achieved by just a few indicators, it is a process of changing a city by implementing the ideal city and, above all, by changing and coordinating the attitudes of people living in the city. Finally, we believe that global warming, the deterioration of climate change is already an established fact. People's living environment will be more and more affected by the extreme climate. Large numbers of people will gather in the cities and the damage will be more expanded in the event of a disaster. We are very happy that many countries have started to promote 'eco-cities,' including Taiwan. Not only do we hope that all cities will move forward to this direction, but will also achieve the goal of a more diversified eco-city.
