Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The factory of Mister Olive is located on a hill with dry weather and plenty of sunshine. The olive trees are planted on nearby steep slopes, whose drainage system is very appropriate for native Formosan olive growing. Yu Zong Xi, known as Mister Olive, established a olive production and marketing team with the great help of the local government and Farmer’s Association. Trying to develop more olive-related products, Mr. Yu converted his team into a innovative bio-tech industry and built a brand of local produces.

2. Summary of Our Project

Olives, the emerald fruit, are very common in our daily life. We eat preserved olives, we put sliced olives in spaghetti, and we spray olive oil on lettuce and tomatoes to make a delicious salad. But we have the slightest idea where the olives are grown, how they are processed, and by whom they are planted. In this project, we will visit an olive factory in Baoshan, Hsinchu County, to investigate this mysterious emerald fruit.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

At first the team members could not reach an agreement in this project and even had some conflicts, which nearly worn out our enthusiasm for the thematic production. But with a much deeper discussion and communication, we finally came to a common consensus and made a great teamwork.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Olive industry has a long history in Western civilization, while that in Taiwan has just begun to stretch its roots. In this thematic production we have a great opportunity to have better knowledge about the olive farming and its product manufacturing. And we realize that it really takes great efforts of many people to accomplish such a contributive yet undervalued industry.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We have applied SWOT analysis, Porter five forces analysis, and risk analysis to the collected data. In this thematic production, we have fully enhanced our webpage design capacity, language logiccality, editing skills and team communication abilities.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Desktop PC phones cameras drawing board Word Macromedia Flash 8 Xara Web Designer MX Premium Google Chrome

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

After we decided to take Mister Olive as the theme of our project, we performed an online search of his information and introduction. Later, we paid him a visit and had an close interview with his daughter, during which we knew more about the founder’s ambition and his perseverance. We also took many photos of the olive farm, the factory, and the olive store, most of which are illustrated on our webpages.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Before we worked on this project, olives were merely a not-so-familiar fruit to us. As we investigated more, we found that olives are not only sources of olive oil but also an emerald fruit full of nutrition and can be turned into many products with the help of biotechnology.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

As we decided on the local leadership project, we made a full discussion and concluded that we would take Mr. Yu Zong Xi, the founder of Mister Olive factory in Baoshan, Hsin-chu County, as our research target. We carried out a close interview and applied a survey through questionnaires for potential customers. Thanks to the staff of Mister Olive and all the interviewees, we had a complete understanding of the industry and its current business model.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

In this webpage production contest, we have had a great opportunity to practice applying Xara to construct the webpages and using Flash to make the pages more vivid and colorful. We have also learned how to perform an interview, design a questionnaire, and conduct a survey. And the most important of all, we have turned all the analyzed data into a well-organized set of webpages.
