Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Yilan county is located in the Northeaster Taiwan island which is a good place with beautiful scenery, fresh air, no industry and no pollution. Yuanshan township is located in the western of Yilan county. It has developed agricultural recreation in recent years. In the township, there are distinctive B&B that Taiwanese idol drama shot the scene many times before. Yushan township is also a valuable place for its head of water in Yilan. It’s a hometown of agriculture. There are abundant of various vegetables and fruits. Agriculture is flourishing. You can see rustic farmers and how they use their wisdom to have a harmonious relation between human and nature. Yuanshan township is even more a creative base to experience agricultural education. Many dreamers who promote agricultural experience to make more people who live in cities know the interesting and profound of agriculture for so long; they let people know the ingredients once again, experience the hard-working of planting in person and the feeling of accomplishment though its unique natural environment, pure clean water in agriculture, to learn how to cherish food and respect nature, to pass agricultural knowledge to next generation for sustainable development. So Yuanshan township is also a place where is filled with power to make dreams come ture.

2. Summary of Our Project

Taiwan took agriculture as country’s base. From hand farming tools to farm engine and to today’s technology farming implement. Every single piece is a record to keep each step of development of Taiwan’s agriculture. Taiwanese farmers are very hardworking. That’s the feature how they show their love and sincerity to this land. Agriculture is the most basic foundation in people’s livelihood. Though agriculture is now facing the farming population’s aging and shortage, farming acreage’s cutting and shrinking, Taiwanese commodity market’s small scale, and after joining WTO, agriculture is forced to have difficult international environment. Hopefully, there are a group of people who have enthusiasm and responsibility to Taiwanese agriculture, they make every effort quietly to develop technology farming implement, to devote ways of cultivation, to improve efficiency of agriculture management, to upgrade agriculture by knowledge management and technology to create more output value and application benefits. Besides, in recent years, Taiwan has a trend to become farmers back in their hometowns, but they are only small farmers with small capital, small farming lands. How can they use the least cost to reach the most efficiency? Mr. Chen Xing Yan, a top student majored in computer science are now getting away to be a farmer with new ways. It’s result from the passion and dream to Taiwanese agriculture. Mr. Chen settled down in Yuanshan township, Yilan county in 2014. Mr. Chen established “broaden sources of nature” club to gather more people who have the same belief. They use open-minded attitude to share their own designs to preserve culture in agriculture and try hard to create high quality of farmer’s living. They give a new way of thinking in traditional agriculture. What’s more, though the process of fulfillment, they find “their ways of living.”

The internet speed (optical fiber) in our school is quite fast. The computer lab we utilize is on the 1st to 8th floor in the newly -built building. There are 15 computer labs. We surf the internet by Cable Modem or ADSL at home. We discuss the project with classmates and teachers by LINE and Facebook.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

In the process of this project, though we had some problems, we learned the skills to solve them. The problems we had during the process are as below: (1) Topic discussion: In the beginning, team members had various ideas in topics, we talked and discussed many times but still couldn’t figure it out. Then we turned to ask for teachers’ help and discussed with them again and again. In the end, we decided to take Mr. Chen Xing Yan and technology farming implement as our topic, then we started to search for related information. (2) Data collection: At first, we didn’t have much idea about the theme of this topic. We collected inappropriate data that took much time on it. After we discussed with teachers many times, interviewed Mr. Chen Xing Yan and visited Mr. Chen’s technology farming implement and farming land, we have clear picture and know the purpose in doing the project. (3) Techniques to make websites: In the process of making the website, we sometimes have some plateau and difficult technique part, luckily team members will talk and try to find out the solution or workaround. We also ask teachers how to deal with the problem, so the process of making website can go very well. (4) Schedule controlling and teamwork: In the meaning time we search the topic, we have our regular daytime curriculum. Our team members are from different grade and class, so we only can make use of our after school time to discuss, our weekend to interview. In the middle of the project, we had our final exam, so we sacrificed our sleep time to finish each part of the project individually from every minute and every second. We know the importance and learn the way to take advantage of time to finish our duty on time, because even one person didn’t do his job well or on time will delay the whole schedule.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

In the process of making project, we increase a lot of knowledge, from the history of agriculture’s development, the evolution of farming tools to learn the technology farming implement and its application. We also visited Mr. Chen Xing Yan in person in Yuanshan township, Yilan county. During the interview, we learned the valuable of “You are never given a dream without also being given the power to make it true. You may have to work for it” Owing to the passion and action to Taiwanese agriculture from Mr. Chen, he can develop many tools to increase the production and management in agriculture and even selfless to share and welcome everyone to make use of his designs. Mr. Chen only hopes to improve the management of cultivating on farms and the quality of farmers’ lives. Therefore, we hope more people can understand farmers’ hardworking through this project, and we can make and promote the technology farming implement. We can do a bit for preserving Taiwanese agriculture.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We use what we had learned from school like related knowledge and computer skills to make the project. We also use many kinds of software to finish the welcome page and HTML links, so the project can have more special features. (1) Phone,LINEapp,Facebook,Cloud service: We use related communicating hardware to connect team members or store the date we got in cloud drive, Facebook, so we can look up or modify document. (2) Computer labs?Audio-visual classrooms: When we make the project or have meetings we will use computer labs or other places in school to discuss the topic and modify the document. And then we use computer to finish project webpage fast. (3) Smart phones?digital cameras: We use smart phones, cameras to keep every moment when we had fieldwork. We can keep some important information and read it repeatedly to increase the accuracy when we arrange it. Besides, we also took photos, camcorder of the interview to make webpage and share with team members. (4) Scanners: We use scanners to input the data to computer and edit such as the books or reports we collected to make the information more complete. (5) Computer software and program: We use software and program learned from school to reorganize and arrange the information and contents and make this project, etc. Through Microsoft Office we make the contents of webpage and frame diagram. Through Photoshop, Illustrator and many other image processing software to finish our photos. Through Dreamweaver to make webpage and jQuery can increase the diversity of the project webpage so it becomes more vivid. (6) Internet browser: We collect technology farming implement and related reports and videos of Mr. Chen Shing Yan from media. We also make use of the internet browser to exam the webpage we design.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

From this project competition, we learn how to face problems and solve them. We also combine the project with local culture and community and we understand how close relationship they are. (1) Combine the courses of making the project: The course of project making combines with multimedia design. We use software we learned to make welcome page. We use many functions from webpage design to make the pages become more vivid. We talked with Chinese teacher how to express the way in the project so the content can be more smooth. (2) Combine and apply internet technology and knowledge: With the common and advanced of internet technology, we can collect the data we need more convenient and easier, so the project can be more completed. In the mean time we get the information from the internet, we also concern about the intellectual property right. (3) Consolidation of the professional techniques: We use the professional techniques learned from school to organize the date much faster and accurate for the project. We use software to post-processing photos and pictures to increase the effect. (4) The improving of humanistic education: In the fieldwork and interview, we understand how to make technology farming implement and how to apply it. We also learned the convenience of developing technology farming implement for agriculture. The convenience is not only with commercial value but running the business in farming, increasing the produce of crops, and it’s also worth discussion in how to define the modern farmers. In the process of making the project, we need to collect and read information continuously. Not only receive the data we need but improve the ability of modification, our team can express much clearly in the project.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

1. Take advantage of internet and technology farming implement to pull the strings: We learn and know what’s technology farming implement from internet, books, periodicals. We also know how to apply the implement in agriculture through youtube and do the project study effectively. 2. Set up “technology peasant” fan page on facebook: We post information we collected, contents of the project we wrote, the review to make the project, meeting photos, etc. on the fan page. So team members can look them up and update the information anytime. What’s more, we can share with our relatives and friends, so they can know technology farming implement and its effect. 3. We visit the expert of technology farming implement in Yuanshan township in Yilan county: We visit the inventor of technology farming implement -- Mr. Chen Shing Yan in person, we understand how to make and use technology farming implement more clearly. We also eye witness the convenient of cultivating by technology farming implement. 4. Making project webpages: Making “a piece of farmland from technology peasant” webpages, we introduce the contribution of Mr. Chen Shing Yan to technology farming implement in detail so a lot of people can know the implement Mr. Chen invented, to understand the effect in agriculture by technology farming implement, and give those implement positive recognition of worth researching and promotion. Quality agriculture can have another image so famers differ from the old days and they have graceful attitude.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

This project making are unique experience that we have never had before. Since we are little, we are the apples of their eyes, and we have never thought we have grown up and can be independent one day. We search for the information by ourselves. We communicate, negotiate, and discuss about the contents with other team members. And even contact the expert that we don’t know before by ourselves. We make a telephone interview, make an appointment to visit him. During the process, the more completing tasks we made, the more appreciation are in our hearts. We are gratitude for the raising from our parents. We are thankful for Mr. Chen Shing Yan giving us the chance to accept our interview and assist us to finish this project. We are also thankful for all people who gave us a hand, advice, and courage in the process of doing the project. Besides, in the process, the most impact is we went to Yuanshan township in Yilan county. Because it is very far, remote, and inconvenient in traffic. Should we take a train and transfer to a bus? Or should we take a intercity coach and transfer to a taxi? We thought many ways to Yuanshan, Yilan. In the end, one of our team member’s parents arranged a special one-day tour to Yilan on weekend, and took us there. So we are gratitude for what Mr. Dong had done to support and assist our project. In this thorough inquiry of the project, we only introduce Mr. Chen Shing Yan. We hope our initiate, so a lot more people will join the development of technology farming implement to create convenient and high efficiency in plating and cultivating to develop Taiwanese quality agriculture. That is our team’s biggest hope.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

In the process of making project, we will quote the senior’s book or analysis, so respect intellectual property and the citation are very important: (1) Text information The most text information is from books, periodicals, and internet, and we arrange and modify the data. When we quote the data, we will cite. (2) Photos Most photos are taken by our team. The other pictures are photocopy from books, periodicals, and we cite the reference source. Our team took the authorization from the party.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

1. Discovery Through this project, we understand what’s technology peasant deeply. “technology peasant” is not just a noun, it is a dream’s practitioner. After the interview, we learn that dream is not only in speaking. Actions speak louder than words. Mr. Chen Shing Yan creates his own farming tools in this way. We respect his spirit of fulfill his dream; we also learn the importance to set a goal and have courage to go for it. 2. Lesson In the interview, we understand what is the spirit of “teamwork.” In the beginning, we have no idea where to start and what to do, we change our topic many times. After teachers assisted, we solve this problem. In the process of making the project, we had some frustration, then we found out our abilities are much more than we thought. That is, there is nothing we want to do or not; there is only thing that we do it with our heart. 3. Amazing In the process of making this project, the most amazing part is when we visited Mr. Chen Shing Yan in Yuanshan township, Yilan county, he explained how to use each kind of technology farming implement in person. He even show us around his farm and the produce of the crops. Farming tools, farmland, dirt and the growing vegetables, fruits on the farm are new experience and interesting things for us who live in cities. We were careful walking on the soft ridge on the farm. We dug soft dirt in person and even ate the fresh vegetables that just picked from the farm. We feel interesting and joy from our heart.
