Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

For decades, customers have paid attention to whether a food product is 'organic' or 'environment-friendly' when they make purchases. As time goes on, the haircare industry has integrated into the concept of environmental protection. Today’s haircare companies focus on more than cleansing effect, as customers push for products that are healthy, natural, and sustainable. O’right, the brand we chose to research for our project, meets all three expectations. A leading green enterprise of Taiwan, O'right implements its environmentalist ideals in every aspect of the company, through its product innovations, its supply chain, its headquarters design, and even events outside of the company. Though its popularity cannot compete with that of mainstream brands in the haircare industry as yet, we believe O’right’s corporate philosophy and respect for nature will pave the way to international success.

2. Summary of Our Project

Among the concerns of today’s society, environment protection is one of the most notable topics. Following the withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Agreement, the countries of the world have put effort into environmental research to make up for deficiencies in the past. After many discussions, we chose to investigate O’right, a brand which integrates environmentalist ideals and represents our country, Taiwan. This project will detail the history, efforts, and achievements of O'right, and investigate the environmental awareness of the public through a survey. We hope to bring the world’s attention to this representative enterprise, and in the meantime, spread the ideals of environment protection through this event.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Problem: In order to better collect and analyze survey results, we put the survey system on a private server, which resulted in jammed traffic and database overload. Solution: A second backup server was set up; an HA mechanism was used to transfer throughput; server status was monitored closely in order to avoid damaging the database. P: Team members had other academic tasks, and the work was not evenly scheduled, resulting in us rushing to finish the rest of the work in the final days. S: Before the due date, we set everything aside and focused on the CyberFair in order to finish the work on schedule. P: A majority of the content was written in Chinese before it was translated into English. Because Chinese sentences follow a more convoluted pattern, and some words did not exist in the English language, so most sentences could not be translated directly. Sn: We split the sentences up as best as we could and spent time on Google and Thesaurus.com to piece together the perfect translation. P: We had a hard time envisioning the layout design of the website. S: We looked at other websites for reference, and we were inspired by the official website designs used by major enterprises: clean, simple, and modern, a style that fit our research enterprise as a green, innovative corporation of tomorrow. P: At first, the work was not evenly distributed between the team members, so some had more work than others. S: We divided our team into groups for different jobs: website making, data collection, and survey analysis. Then we chose a leader, who would schedule the tasks for each group member and report on the progress of the project. P: The initial information we collected was too general and unable to be thoroughly investigated. S: We compared the information we collected and asked the teacher for help. In addition, the information O’right gave us during the visit gave us an insight into its beliefs and workings.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

To our team, it is absolutely an honor to have the opportunity to represent our school and participate in an international event such as the CyberFair, and perhaps to let Taiwan’s green enterprise be known to the world. Winning or not, the project we have worked hard to complete will be an accomplishment, not only for the team but also for our school and community.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

A considerable part of our research was integrated with learning objectives and features from Taiwan’s 12-year compulsory education. We took inspiration from the subjects such as language arts, social studies, arts and humanities, and science and technology to complete the following steps: 1) Project topic selection 2) Data collection and research 3) On-site investigation and interview 4) Analysis and conclusion In addition to implementing the 12-year compulsory education curriculums instituted by the Ministry of Education, our school has designed the 'Language and Culture” course, which incorporates thematic research into Taiwan’s history, geography, economy, transportation, and industry, educating students about our motherland as well as cultivating research skills. Hence, this project extends our school’s spirit of diversified learning and follows research methods taught by these programs. With the assistance of technology and hands-on operation, we were able to execute our research and complete this project.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In order to acquire firsthand knowledge of the enterprise, we visited the O’right headquarters in Taoyuan and interviewed Mr. Hsieh, the vice president of O’right. In a presentation, Mr. Hsieh introduced us to the company’s philosophies and ideals, the efforts taken by the company to fulfill these ideals, and the results achieved by these efforts. We were inspired by the company’s designs, innovations, and technology, each of which Mr. Hsieh gave a detailed description during the tour of the headquarters. We later created our website, which detailed the knowledge of our visit and interview; and a questionnaire, which investigated people’s preferences in brand selection, environmental awareness, and understanding of O’right, and received close to two hundred responses. We hope viewers would find inspiration and incentive to protect the environment in our website, and learn about O’right from our questionnaire.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Just as O'right inspired us by introducing the infinite ways we could help protect the environment, we aim to raise awareness and inspire more people to take action, as well as commending this Taiwanese enterprise and its works to the world. This we have in part accomplished through promulgating our website and questionnaire to the people around us, including our family and relatives, acquaintances on social media, and students and teachers of our school. We hope our efforts will alert the public to the changing environment and motivate them to join O'right's cause.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We express our thanks to the vice president of O’right, Mr. Hsieh, whose comprehensive presentation gave us an insight into the company’s ideals, products, and efforts, and whose tour of the headquarters provided us a clearer picture of the enterprise and allowed us to see O’right’s countless innovative creations for ourselves. We are also grateful for the people who took the time to fill in our survey with honest and thoughtful responses, as their answers gave us invaluable data for investigation and analysis. Lastly, we owe our gratitude to our instructors, Bear Shiao and Wins Peng, who guided us during planning and discussions, offered suggestions when we had no clue what we were doing, and encouraged us to communicate and work as a team. Without these people, we couldn’t have accomplished what we have in our project today.
