Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Lugang Township, Changhua County is adjacent with Taiwan Strait to the west, Xiushui Township to the east, Fuxing Township to the south, and Xianxi Township and Hemei Township to the north. It is in the central part of Taiwan. Grandpa Chao is a kind old farmer. He was born and grew up in Tsaogang community, Lugang Town.He struggled half of his lifetime to get rid of poverty. After he became rich, he made up his mind to help people around in the rest of his life.

2. Summary of Our Project

Grandpa Chao witnessed modern Taiwan history and joined the 823 Artillery War in person. We were so lucky to have a conversation with the soldier surviving from the war. The story was so real that we were deeply attracted. Grandpa Chao always tried to overcome his difficulties in life. He was like the main character in a fantasy novel.

1). We are too busy. 2). Grandpa Chao’s Car Accident made us revise the article structure. 3). We are not good writers. 4). We are not good at building webpages. 5). We don’t have the experience of interviewing people. 6). Translation is tough work. 7). Oscar transferred to Lugang Junior High School last summer.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

In fact, we are the biggest gainers because we learned a lot during this period. We have much more than expected. Grandpa Chao’s philosophy is so optimistic that everyone of us was moved by him. He always looked at the bright side of life and never gave up. His positive personality made everyone around him cheerful and upbeat.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We wrote cards to encourage Grandpa Chao when he was in the hospital. We kept visiting him after he went home.It conveys our intention of improving the atmosphere around us. We hope that we can have responses from more people. We experienced growing and harvesting rice to know how hard a farmer is. Dressing up Oscard as an informer is another interesting experience. Students who listened to our introduction about Grandpa Chao wanted to learn his spirits.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

First, it takes a very long time to make webpages and organize materials. We tried our best to complete the tasks and being efficient because we will have Comprehensive Assessment Program for Junior High School Students, an entrance exam, three months later. We assigned tasks to everyone and helped each other as possible as we can. However, problems kept emerging when the deadline comes near. We kept reminding each other about time management and the importance of work planning. Time management and planning are the biggest lessons we learned. Besides, translation is a tough job. We tried to translate the articles on our own, but there were many errors. So, we worked in pairs to check the spelling, and syntax. At the same time, we asked English teachers in our school for help. Thanks them for revising our mistakes. I also learned a lesson that we need to study English harder. Last, I found there were many good little people in the world. They did goodness without asking reward. They were really heroes and heroines.
