Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Qianyang county is locate at the western of Shaanxi, a loess hilly and gully region. Total county covers the area of 996.46 square kilometers, has 7 townships and 97 administrative villages with about 134,000 people, of which 111,000 people are farmers. Qianyang County develops fruit-tree and vegetable planting, has a 4600 mu of the Asia's biggest base of apple nursery stock; the biggest sample base farm in the country that plantations are intensively managed. Carrot , corn, milk powder and apple abtain Golden Prize in China. Seven production bases are identified as a pollution-free agricultural production base. Qianyang is the mother land of Yanji who is one of Confucius's 72 pupils; Zhi Guoqin who is a prime minister in West-Han Dynasty; and Duan Xiushi who is an official in Tang Dynasty, known to history as 'Three sages in Qianyang'. Qianhu wetland, a heaven of regimen, is the sole national wetland in Shaanxi. Shaanxi Lianhuashan hunting grounds is a garden for hunting with a beautiful scenery.

2. Summary of Our Project

We interviewed embroidery ladies and studied of Qianyang embroidery characteristic and development to get to know Qianyang embroidery better. Qianyang embroidery is a folk art handed down from generation to generation through oral tradition, a fine folk art treasure that ancient people left us. We also have seen the challenge Qianyang embroidery faces, and the measures by County Government to inherit, develop local fabric embroidery. It strengthens our responsibility to preserve folk art. Meanwhile in the course of project research, our ability of social practice and IT got improved.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1,Most of local people who can embroider are farmers, they are a little bit busy and not available for an interview. 2, Rural students had been little touched by the Information technology, we are not proficient in computer software 3, Our interviews out of school was not allowed by school leaders because of security concerns. 4, We don’t have the experience to take part in Cyberfair. Solution: 1, We encouraged school students to ask their parents or relatives to contact folk artists 2, Making use of after class time, turn to teachers for helps , we improved our ability to operate the computer. 3, We went out an interview on weenkends.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

By taking part in webpage-making competition, we understand a lot of information about Qianyang embroidery and appreciate the traditional crafts, in addition to enhancing our love of homeland. We develop deep feelings for homeland embroidery and want to become more involved in promoting them. Meanwhile we loved IT deeply, learned to express our voice and feeling by internet.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

1, The combination of art class and our study of Cyberfair project, we utilize the knowledge we learned in art lesson in the webpage-making, to make a page appealing. And introducing the homeland embroidery into art teaching. 2, The combination of IT class and our study of Cyberfair project, students learn to make web pages in IT lesson, and supply support for the related research of Cyberfair project. 3, In the extension of research, homeland embroidery was introduced into art teaching, and enhanced student’s love of homeland.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

The activity of interview on spot, we got to know our hometown characteristics, and enhance homeland sense of pride. We are gradually getting in on the cause of embroidery. We no longer think of ourselves as interviewers or outsiders. We went to interview as the masters of the homeland that we are. We try our best to promote more people to care and support the continuation of the traditional crafts.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

A, By Cyberfair Project, we need to do something to have more people participate in our research, promote homeland embroidery and attract more people to pay attention to the continuation of the traditional crafts. B, By our project research website to promote Qianyang embroidery, we want more and more people to come to our town, and to buy traditional crafts for giving a nice boost to the local economy.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The leader of the county cultural administration department accepted our interviews, and provided us with materials. Leaders and teachers from Qianyang County vocational middle school helped us contact Xiuping Embroidery Shop, where we got research materials. School leaders provided us funding and vehicle support.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We did not learn much about homeland embroidery until we did this project research. We were impressed when we watched many vivid embroidery works, folk artists highly adept in embroidery. The expert introduced splendidly that we only knew homeland embroidery is exquisite, and has a profound cultural background and achievement. We are expected to get more people to join the throng of embroidery lady, as it continues to pass along from one generation to the next.
