1. Description of Our Community

Jing-Xin Recovery Home is in Fangyuan Township. Fangyuan is famous for its aquaculture industry . You can see oyster farm everywhere. And thus people call it “Pearl of the West Coast.” Besides, several famous scenic spots, like Ham-Bow Wetland, Wang Kong Fishing Port, and Taiwan Ham-Bow Garden are in Fangyuan Township. They are loved by tourists of all ages.

2. Summary of Our Project

Our project includes the following parts: 1. A brief introduction of Jing-Xin Recovery Home. 2. A brief introduction of people with mental illness. 3. We visited . Jing-Xin Recovery Home. 4. Interviews with some of the staff in Jing-Xin and experts. 5. The importance of helping and caring about those people with mental illness.

There are three computer laboratories, and there is a computer in every classroom at our school, which can connect to the Net through academic network. We usually searched for information, organized materials, or made our web pages in the computer lab during lunch break on school days. On the weekend, we used ADSL at home to work on the project

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1: This is our first time to join Cyberfair. Lots of tasks, such as decision on the topic, interviews, designing the questionnaire, etc. ,are challenges for us. 2: Our members are in different grades and classes, so it is not easy for us to have meeting together. The 9th graders are preparing for the “Comprehensive Assessment Program for Junior High School Students”, which makes it harder for them to discuss the project with us. 3: It is easy for us to surf the Net, but not the web design. It became the most difficult part of the project to design our webpage.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We want to make the public know more about mental disorder and care more about people with mental illness through our project.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

a. Interviews, designing questionnaire, recording, organizing materials, and writing a report are related to “Language Arts”. b. Calculating the results of the responses and making pie charts are related to “Mathematics”. c. Group discussion and team work are related to “Integrative Activities”. d. Designing web pages, taking and editing photos in an aesthetic way are related to “Arts and Humanities”. e. Searching for information online, using software to make a web page, respecting the intellectual property rights are related to “Information Technology Education”. f. Interviewing people with different jobs is related to “Career Development Education”.

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

a. We used desktop computers, laptops, digital cameras, printers, and flash drivers to complete our project. b. We used software such as Photoshop, Geany, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Office to complete our project.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

To know better about Jing-Xin Recovery Home, our members visited there, interviewed the staff, and some important experts. Also, we tried to give the residents happy atmosphere by playing Christmas songs for them. We knew what classmates around us thought about mental disorder by conducting a survey and educated the eighth graders about mental disorder in class. These made more people treat people with mental disorder with more respect and tolerance. These activities presented how we acted as ambassadors and spokespersons of the project.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We spent lots of time on the project, but we learned how to exhibit teamwork during the period. We used to be ignorant and scared about the people with mental illness, but after the project, we learned that people with mental illness were as common as people who catch a cold. If they can go to the doctor as early as possible, take medicine, and keep rehabilitating. They can, like us, lead a normal life. As a junior high school student, we hardly have the chance to meet people with different jobs. Through interviews of the project, we had the chance to meet psychiatrists, nurses, occupational therapists, and counseling psychologist. From the interviews, we knew what did they do and the difficult part of their jobs.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

To visit Jing-Xin Recovery Home, one of the member’s parents volunteered to drive us there. In the project, we interviewed some of the staff in Jing-Xin, the elderly neighbor, and several experts. They all helped a lot to our project.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Discoveries: (1)People with mental illness can also lead a normal life. (2)The stigmatized “mind-split disease” was changed into “integration disorder” in 2014. Lessons: (1)When working on the project, it was common that some members would delay their assignments, and thus all of the team was behind schedule. Even the member in charge of making web pages had to spend more time on the web pages. That’s what we had to improve. (2) We used to ignore people with mental illness because we usually mistook them for bad guys. After the project, we knew the illness itself was like a cold everyone often caught. Surprises: More and more social welfare organizations provide care and service for people with mental illness.
