Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

We are a remote Administrative Region under the jurisdiction of Lanzhou city: Honggu district. In the north of HaiShiwan, there is a nondescript mountain: Northern mountain. It was not high like Tai mount, and not odd like Mount Huang, but in my opinion, it is our patron saint of this place. Tens of thousands of years ago, it was standing in this place, but for thousands of years, due to environmental changes and deterioration, the green vegetation on the mountain is less and less, and the loess is more and more. However, in order to develop the economy, the government ignored the environmental protection and neglected the people's livelihood. There is coal mine under the mountain, there is bare loess on the mountain, sandstorms often wreak havoc on people's health.

2. Summary of Our Project

The main focus in this project is the soul of Beishan. It highlights that local people organized spontaneously to plant tree and enjoy the journey. Let people feel the concept of 'governance of Northern mount has a long way to go, everyone should be involved”.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:21-50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1) We can not personally participate in major tree planting activities, so we feel not deep.

Although most of the major events are held in the weekend, we do not have time to participate in, and experienced the happiness. So we have to copy the photos of our friends who had ever taken part in the large-scale activities, to share the fun. In order to experience the hardships of barren, we were also personally planting, watering and sharing it online to show our concept of harnessing mountain.

2) Time is few and our tasks heavy. We had to make up the lessons we had missed on weekend.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

It is easy to make web page, but the process is difficult. We will do it again if given the chance. We believe that No pain, No gain. The Party Central Committee always concerned about environmental protection, barren governance, but why it can not be implemented in place? Why is it so difficult?' In order to find the answer, we set out in person, in this environment, it is very difficult to grow a small tree, the watering and conservation work is a major task, it needs for long-term care. Barren requires patience and payment.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We can’t see the environment around us has been seriously treading on, I believe the whole earth is destroying too cruel. Remember, 'we have only one earth,' if she was 'sick', who can we depend on? The new curriculum clearly pointed out that high school students must participate in social practice, it is 6 points, take this opportunity, we launched our research activities. Not only completed the social practice but also completed the web works, it really kills two birds with one stone.

During the study, we obtained knowledge from many sources besides books, learned a lot about environmental protection and rehabilitation of barren hills. Our experience made us feel the hardships of harnessing barren hills. We need green environment. Yes, we will have.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Phone, Internet, Computer, PS, Word, DV, Pen and Paper

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Our team experienced as reports to discuss and interview participants who plant tree on Beishan, and look for some information about harnessing barren hills.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

After several years of barren governance, we got some effects, the people around us realize that 'everyone have the responsibility for environmental protection; everyone can do something for barren governance'; it is related with each person's health and environment. While climbing and exercising, it can improve the barren consciousness of the local people, and make a contribution for the governance of northern mount. On the one hand, to protect the environment and our health, on the other hand, the treatment effect is obvious, people see the results, and the feelings are pleasure.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

As local people planted tree on Beishan, they listened to our advises and guidelines, as a result, they gave us a support for our research subject.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We found out the root of pollution, and had a deep understanding of the long-term and arduous of harnessing barren hills

Without harnessing barren hills, the situation of environment pollution doesn't get improved, there would be no guarantee for the quality of people’s lives

Let people feel the concept of 'governance of Northern mount has a long way to go, everyone should be involved”.
