1. Description of Our Community

There are many traditional artworks in Yongjing Township, Changhua Country, Taiwan (R.O.C.). For example, Jian-nien Art, Painting Door Gods, and Koji Pottery art were decorated in historical sites and temples. There are many temples and historical sites in Yongjing within histories and scale, like, Yu San Guan, Chen Mei Hall, and House of Royalty. These historic buildings have many exquisite works of traditional Jian-nian artworks. Now, let’s follow our step to appreciate traditional craft art in Yongjing.

2. Summary of Our Project

“Beauty is everywhere. It is not that she is lacking to our eye, but our eyes which fail to perceive her.” -- Auguste Rodin Yongjing Township, the hometown we grew up and learned together. There are a lot of exquisite Jian-nian artworks and Painting artworks in Yongjing, though we don’t know. Through our teachers and many local craftmen’s introductions about the Traditional Art in Yongjing, we decided to let many other people to know our township’s beauty. So, let’s follow our step to a trip to encounter beauty. It will be a wonderful trip to enjoy the traditional arts.

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

At the first we decided to let other people around the world to know our township’s beauty, we had some problem, and then we overcame. One of the problems is to decide the topic. We dicussed together, but everybody had their own ideas, and we couldn’t to decide an outcome. After teacher’s assist, we voted to decide the topic, and let all team members agree it, and we can countine next step. Another problem is we are not professional web designers; we had a big problem to creat a web. Fortunately, our school’s computer teacher knew we attend the International Cyberfair, he tought us to design patiently. We all deeply appreciated him.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

For my students, it a great opportunity for them to have a deeply understand the beauty of their hometown and let more people know its beauty. For me, it also a wonderful experience to discuss, decide, creat, finish and overcome a great mission toghther and started form scratch.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our project involves the traditional artworks like Jian-nien, Koji Pottery, and Painting decorations at our local historical sites and temples in Yongjing. We introduced the art history, the craft men and their artworks. In order to let students to experience the art, we also taught them to creat a Jian-nien by themselve in the Art class. It’s absolutely that using the Internet to teach and learn is effective. When we have doubts, we can surf the Internet to fine the answer immediately. We also use traditional methods, through the teacher’s instruction to let student know the traditional artworks’ history in Yongjing in a short time. I think the both two teaching methods are effective for our students in different ways. In Cyberfair, our students are a Primary group, they disscuss the topic and the contents, clearn how to design a web, they spent time to work together and completed the mission. All the students are so proud of themselve.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

During we completed the project; we used many tools to assist us, like computers, the Internet, some software like PhotoCap and Filezilla, and historical books about the art of Jian-nien, and oral interview. We used PhotoCap to key in all words explanation of all the pictures on our website. We interview the art craftmen and we took pictures with them by digital camera. Before the interview, we introduced the history of Jian-nien by using Power Point and books to let studrnts know. Our school also provided the camera and lots of paper to copy our worksheets and drawing of maps. We think the most helpful tools are the Net and all the software we used. With these tools, our students can complete different parts in different ways and help them to creat and design the website smooth going. It’s very thankful for our school’s assistance.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In order to accomplish our project, our students had to interview some craftmen and historical worker. We contacted them with phone. During those contacts, some of craftmen told us that he learned his skills from his father since he was a child and all of his life are doing the same job, so they are become the best craftman. And during the interview, one of our student asked the craft “You do the same job all you lifetime, do you ever think the job is uninteresting or boring?”, and the craftman answer”No, I have never think about it. Because when I creat the artworks, I can fell the shadow of my father, it let me fell my father accompany me”. When we heard, we were all very touching and impressive. After the interview, we would give certificate of Recognition to them, and some of them gave us their works collections books as a gift. It’s very pleasant during our interview, and our students gained a lot.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

I think Yongjing Township is not as famous as Lukang, however, through the Cyberfair, we led students to know their hometown deeply, and creat a websit to introduce the beauty in Yongjing. We are like a “bridge”, connect Yongjing and the world. We also reported our project to whole students in our school at morning meeting. People around the world can know Yongjing through searching the key words “Beauty in Yongjing”. I am not a local people in Yongjing, however, through this mission; I knew the traditional art, temples’ decorations, and historical sites’ history. Before visiting, I have never noticed the architecture in Yongjing, but now when I go to a place, I spend more time to know the history and decorations on the architecture. I also enjoy the partnership with other teachers and the students. All the footprint and interviews touching my heart, and let me know why people do the same thing persistenlly.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

At the first, we made an announcement in our school to appeal the volunteer students to join Cyber Fair, and we choosed the students had passion and patience to work together. I think it is lucky for us, because when we met difficults, we need some helper, and we overcome successfully through the helpers’ assistance. Our helps include computer teachers, the historical worker of Yongjing, the chairmen of temples, and the craftmen of traditional art. We visited the chairman of the temples; they introduced the decorations and the history of temple for us, also told us the historical works’ contact ways. The histroical worker told us how flourishing in Yongjing at early time, there had a theater and a lot of stores on Yongjing Street .We know lot of information through interviewing them. They assisted us to integrate our information of about other interview of chairman. They also gave us some referenve books as a gift. We were very thankful for their help.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

During we made the project, our students experienced how to creat Jain-nien artworks, painting Door Gods, and Chinese ink painting. These lessons were interesting, not only listened to teachers’ introduction, but also let students to experience, I think it is a great way to educate. Through our students’ experience lessons, I found out that our student has clever and bright art painting color and clear painting compisition. And we discovered that students interested in creating artworks and visiting map, they surf the google map and painting guild videos voluntarily. At the end of our project, I found that our students were immersed in the project. They wanted to do next year that surprised us. I really enjoy and greatful to join the project, I gained a lot from the teamwork.
