1. Description of Our Community

Shulin was famous across Taiwan for the red rice wine produced by the Wood Distillery of the Taiwan Provincial Tobacco and Wine Bureau. In October 2008, an activity with the theme of “Rejuvenation of Red Yeast Rice of Wood” was held to publicize the distinctive cultural features of Shulin District. The people living in Shulin District are honest and deeply interested in taekwondo. Li-cheng Tseng, an Olympic Games taekwondo contestant, and Shu-chun Yang, an Asian taekwondo contestant, come from the district.

2. Summary of Our Project

On the sport arena, an excellent coach can make the greatest potential out of a contestant and train him/her into a medalist. In the Taiwanese taekwondo circle, Jing-hung Sung is a coach of this kind. Running Hsiung Qi Taekwondo, a taekwondo center in Shulin District, New Taipei City, he has achieved some remarkable results in the training of taekwondo practitioners. In his peak time, his students accounted for 50% of the national taekwondo team and won the laudatory title of Ku-chun Sung. Moreover, he has won many honorary titles as a coach in New Taipei City and even across the nation.

Currently, the school has a computer room, where all the computers are equipped with Windows 7. Each class is furnished with a computer, and a computer with the internet access can be found in each subject classroom. Additionally, the library provides students with the service of online information collection.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1. In fact, making web pages posed tremendous challenge on us, as there wasn’t any course about this aspect in our elementary school days. Therefore, we had to make continuous efforts to master the skills and discuss the problems. 2. Unfamiliar with such information devices as voice recorder, photocopier, camera and video camera, we needed to get acquainted with all of them. The teachers taught us how to use the software and hardware of the information devices. Although we had to rely on ourselves to learn many things, the team members discussed problems together and helped each other. Therefore, we made constant progress in the process.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

The Cyberfair Project was seemingly easy, but actually it was very difficult. The coach encouraged us to make efforts and sacrifice and work harder than others. Hence, I chose to march forward while others were having a rest; if I was away from the computer adopted for the making of web pages, I considered how to enrich the contents. By doing so, I managed to make greater endeavor than others.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

1. Integrated with the information education: Aside from the data collection, the making of web pages played an important role in this Cyberfair Project. To finish the task, all the students sharpened the data collection skills, including the photo taking, the photo editing, and the making of web pages. 2. Integrated with the physical education: In the annual taekwondo competition among the classes, we learned taekwondo and observed its spirit, so as to carry forward it in the curriculum of New Taipei Municipal Yulin Junior High School and make the school a “Prestigious Taekwondo School in New Taipei City”.

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

FastStone photo resizer 1. KompoZer is a free piece of software for making web pages. 2. The Google could disc was adopted as the platform of data sharing and storage. 3. FastStone photo resizer was the main tool for zooming the pictures. Other Information and Technological Equipment 1. Video camera 2. Camera 3. Recorder pen 4. Smart phone

All these were the effective tools for the data collection and the making of web pages.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Our interviewee was Mr. Jing-hung Sung. With the assistance of Teacher Fu-chin Chen, we set the first interview date with Mr. Jing-hung Sung. For the later interviews and relevant problems, we contacted with him with the help of Teacher Fu-chin Chen and via LINE, the communication software. As for the interview outline, we had the discussion during the team’s social activities and sorted out the problems. Then, we informed Teacher Fu-chin Chen of our requirements. For instance, if we needed some photos from Mr. Jing-hung Sung, we would turn to Teacher Fu-chin Chen for an appropriate time for a visit. Each partner was a spokesman of this research program. All the team members contacted the leader in turn.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The greatest impact is the acquisition and improvement of three abilities. The first one is the information ability. In the process of making web pages, we learned how to tell stories through web pages. Although we couldn’t operate the interface as skillfully as the professionals, we accumulated rich practical experience in our exploration, which would not be obtained from textbooks. The second one is the ability to interview others. Under the guidance of the teachers, we learned how to design questions appropriate for the interviews. In the interviews, we learned how to listen to others; with the information devices, we attempted to keep a complete record of the interviews. The third one is the ability to collect and sort out data.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The words on the web pages were the data collected by our team members through the division of labor. Then, the data were fully absorbed and translated into our knowledge. During the social activities, we presented the data for discussion and revision. Then, the teachers also helped us proofread and revise the words. For the words directly quoted from the interviewee, we marked the source in the script. The photos included the ones taken by us and the personal ones offered by Mr. Jing-hung Sung. Then, they were edited and zoomed and uploaded onto the web pages.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We have much to share as to discoveries, lessons and surprises. We noticed the perseverance of Mr. Jing-hung Sung in publicizing the spirit of taekwondo. The taekwondo coach, with whom our team was initially unfamiliar, frequently turned up on campus in a passionate profile. Aside from teaching taekwondo, the coach expected the students to develop a positive attitude towards life. For him, victory is the objective of many competitors, but failure is also process of learning or a good lesson for us to learn, for the victory without frustration would lead to arrogance. The coach is famous and influential, but he received the interview in a modest manner as a teacher, a friend, a father and a grandfather. He has set a good example for us.
