Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

New Taipei City is located in the Taipei Basin, and it surrounds Taipei City and is adjacent to Keelung City. It combines with Taipei City to become the Taipei metropolitan area. It’s the biggest municipality in Taiwan and a typical, highly-populated city. Xindian District is one of the districts in New Taipei City and is located at the southern tip of Taipei City. Due to its location advantage, many major companies were attracted to come here to set up their bases, such as HTC, VIA Electronic, 104 Corporation, Gigabyte, etc. and not to mention the deeply rooted local company like the “Yulon Motor Co., Ltd.” Comparing to Japan and the USA, the automobile industry has never been our strongest suit in Taiwan. Through intensive research and development process, Yulon Motor has dedicated its effort to become the leading car manufacturer in Asia region for the Taiwanese people. Hoping one day it will outmatch companies in Europe, the United States, and Japan, and make the country proud.

2. Summary of Our Project

Yulon Motor Co., Ltd., or in short, Yulon Motor, and its affiliates form the Yulon Group. It is one of the specialized car manufacturers in Taiwan, founded by Mr. Yen Tjing-Ling. The forming of the Yulon Group marked the beginning of Taiwan’s automobile industry after the civil war and also brought light to other related industries. More recently, with its new successful brand and self-driving technology, it becomes more and more popular among the people. Through research, videos, on-site visits, interviews, and surveys, we learn and discover how Yulon Group kept a positive attitude after facing failures when creating its own brands in the past. We also study how it continuously learns new car-related technology and finds the brightest and most innovative people to help create our very own Luxgen of Taiwan.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Currently, our school’s servers are very well equipped. There are two computer labs for the students, and every teacher has a computer for teaching use. The most special thing is that the whole school is covered with Wi-Fi network, and, as part of the e-Backpack program, all fifth grade students involving in the competition are given a Google ChromeBook to help making mind maps, gathering information, recording, and sharing and communicating cloud-based data.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Getting the consent Since Luxgen is the first self-created brand in Taiwan, it has many secrets that can’t be shared with others. Therefore, visiting the company wasn’t that easily. We found the easiest way to get their permission is to call them directly and send emails detailed the purpose of our visit and School’s past Cyberfair projects. About a month later, we got a reply from its public relationship office inviting us to visit its research and development center-Hua-chuang Automobile Information Technical Center Co., Ltd. (HAITEC) and get the first-handed information.

Planning the activity It’s also challenging to figure out how to get the information we need and let the presenters have a pleasant time with us. We studied beforehand and organized the questions we wanted to ask. Then, we practiced how to deal with situations we might face during the interview. We also asked teachers to help us take pictures and record the interview, so that we can use them later.

Transportation issues Since we don’t want to affect our school work, our visits were planned during day that we had our club meetings or on weekends. Special thanks to school for organizing the safe and fast transportation.

Incorrect assumption of the self-driving technology Through Mr. Chih-Han Chang, the section chief of HAITEC, we learned that self-driving cars weren’t what we thought they were. In fact, self-driving systems have been used all over the world, like the auto-brake function in many cars is part of the self-driving system. From this visit, we know Luxgen works on self-driving technology not for the money, but it wants nothing more than creating an accident-free world.

Teamwork CyberFair is a project that needs many people’s work to create a website. In the beginning, we would write the similar parts, and we didn’t cooperate with each other well. With the teacher’s help, we learned to organize and separate the writing parts. In the end, we were able to finish the …

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Our life is like great turbulent waves. Without rocks blocking the ways, how could we have such beautiful waves!? Yulon Group experienced two failures in the past trying to develop their own brand. Without these failures, we won’t have “Luxgen” today.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Phone and Email: Contact the interviewees and set up the interview; collect the first-hand information. The Internet: Use the Internet to collect second-hand information; use the cloud-based platform to share information and process data; communicate between the team members. ChromeBook: Use various applications to make artistics pictures, edit content, analyze data as well as build the web page. 2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In order to better understand the Yulon Group and its affiliates that based in New Taipei City as well as its self-created brand-Luxgen, we interviewed Mr. Kao, Xiang-Yi, the model designer of Hua-chuang Automobile Information Technical Center Co., Ltd. and Mr. Mr. Chang, Chih-Han, the section chief of Image Processing Department. We learned about the process of making cars and-as part of the new trend for future cars-self-driving technology and Internet of Vehicle (IoV). We hope our website will be wonderful and motivating to every visitor. We surveyed students in Kang Chiao Bilingual School to raise awareness of the benefits of self-driving technology as well as letting them have a better understanding of the importance of being “creative and innovative” when we face our ever-changing future.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Interview: Through the visits and interviews, we gained a better understanding on how creativity and innovation bring more convenience to Taiwanese people’s future lives during the design and development process of a car. Field experience: During the visit to the “Hua-Chuang Secret Base for Car,” we not only see some unique ideas of car designs, but also gain insight into the dedication of YULON Motor Co., Ltd. in its design and development of the car Creative Thinking: YULON Motor Co., Ltd. uses its creativity in its effort to become the Taiwan-owned leading car brand in Asia region. It develops self-driving technology in the attempt to reduce the car’s impact on the environment. The company holds the belief that, as the top priority, it is essential to use creativity and research development to help the more disadvantaged groups in Taiwan. We realize that only through applying what we learn in books and thinking outside the box then can we express ourselves creatively. Lifelong Learning: In the past, Yulon Group had tried and failed to develop its own brands. Yet, despite the failures and the changes in the leadership, they still keeps the founder Mr. Yen Tjing-Ling’s belief in the pursue of better and bettter manufacturing ability. Therefore, only through lifelong learning and failure can we adapt to this ever-changing world.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Mr. Kao, Xiang-Yi accepted our interview request and shared his story growing up and his belief in car design. Mr. Chang, Chih-Han accepted our interview request and shared his story growing up and research and development process of self-driving technology. Public Relation Department of YULON Group arranged the visit to Yulon Group and hands-on experience. Luxgen Salesman demonstrated Luxgen V7’s unique features and how to operate them.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

YULON Motor Co., Ltd. continuously enhance the capabilities of manufacturing from other countries and stay positive after some unsuccessful experience. YULON recruits the talent with abilities of creativity and innovation in Taiwan, and they developed their own brand of Taiwan-Luxgen. Compare to Europe, the United States, and Japan, the auto industry of Taiwan hasn’t been in a dominant position in the market, so YULON keeps on innovating, researching and developing the new cars which would represent Asian ethnics in the auto market. In the near future, hope Taiwan’s automobile industry will stand out in the world and become the leader among all the other countries.
