Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

We are students from “Ovidius” High, a school in Constanta, Romania, one of the best schools in the country. Our students have every year very good academic results, both in current and final standard evaluations but also in contests and national and international Olympiads, mainly on sciences and technologies. Constanta is the second city in Romania, and the biggest sea port at the Romanian Black Sea shore. It is an industrial town, focused on tourism, trade and transportation. As in all big cities, there are a lot of big problems the community is facing, many conflicts and situations that have to be dealt with.

2. Summary of Our Project

The project was developed with the help of a local NGO – CENTRAS – resource center for NGOs. With the support of local donor, and in cooperation with the NGO, the students started a project focused on a non-formal learning method, namely forum-theater. This is a method that can help solving social issues by organizing a theatre performance with actors that display by acting a local social problem, relevant for the community. The audience, consisting in local community members, can stop the play and enter the stage as actors, suggesting solution to the problem stated at the beginning.

Using this method, 14 groups of 7 people were trained in Constanta, and each group performed 8 shows for the local community. More than 2000 people were involved in this project and attended the plays as active viewers.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

It was a very demanding project from the point of view of the time involved for the trainings and shows - more than 80 hours.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Challenging, yet interesting ....

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We worked mainly in our spare time and only one hour per week during an optional class (European Projects). We approached a problem that can be deal with only in a interdisciplinary manner. We learn more about identifying local social problems and starting the process of finding a solution for it. It was an interesting project because we had the chance to mix 2 different kind of approached - face to face work and internet

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We used the computers in the school labs but also our own equipment (smart phones, cameras, laptops). We also used the help of the people in charge with the training in the field of forum theater, as resources persons in our approach

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

It was quite challenging for us to start such a project because we had to follow a new path, not very comfortable for some of us due to the fact that we had to perform on stage in order to find solutions for local problems and go over the stage stress. After that we have to come out with solutions for the dissemination of the project results in order to have other people come together in our initiative

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We are sure that the project already made a difference for the people who attended our shows and who got involved in the problem solving approach we suggest.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We had the help of the representatives on CENTRAS NGO and also the help of our colleagues, teachers and audience of the plays.
