Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The topic of our team this year is 'Taiwan Association for Independent Bookshop Culture.' This association was founded by Mr. Chen, and is a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of the culture and spirit of indie bookshops all across Taiwan. Our team hopes to make indie bookshops more common and to allow people to discover a method of purchasing books other than from big brands and chain bookstores. Hopefully, after experiencing and understanding indie bookshops, people will realize the unique and enjoyable culture of these bookshops. The research will focus on the managing and advancement of indie bookshops in order to create a lasting impression on people and preserve this important yet fading culture.

2. Summary of Our Project

Mr. Chen’s Taiwan Association for Independent Bookshop Culture is located in the eastern district of Taichung city of Taiwan. The district is one of amazing and diverse cultures, along with plentiful attractions and things to keep one busy with, which makes Taichung city a fantastic tourist attraction! Mr. Chen cares deeply about maintaining the business of indie bookshops, and that drives mr. Chen to encourage and promote reading and the preservation of valuable culture with the association. After years of hardwork and organisation, the Taiwan Association for Independent Bookshop Culture offers service in many locations across numerous cities and is still working towards Mr. Chen’s beliefs and goals.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

This competition and interview are our team member's first experience of Cyberfair. The process with full of study, effort, depression, and laughs. Although there were many problems during the interview with Mr. Chen, our team member still worked very hard to solve these issues. With our first interview, we were not skilled enough to handle all the problems. Nevertheless, we wanted to thanks our teachers and Mr. Chen for accepting us. We faced a lot of technical problems throughout the competition, such as photoshop and dreamweaver; those kinds of professional programs. However, we now learned how to interview like a reporter; we learned how to modify pictures and videos like a professional photo maker; we also learned to build up a website like a professional web page designer.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

This project is way more than just a project. The Taiwan Association of Independent bookshop culture is attempting to save what's left of an amazing culture that is slowly fading away into obscurity. We wish to promote and to aid in the preservation of such unique culture.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

The program we used is PowerDirector, iMovie (making flash films), and Adobe DreamWeaver CS3 (to paste the pictures and information).

The equipment and technology we used: Digital camera (filming), cellphone (tape-recording, documenting, contacting), laptops (web page design, pasting information, contact, write information), Optical Network and wifi wireless network (information research and for providing internet services for laptops), and USB(easy to carry information around; sending and receiving information)

Other resources we reached for: books(provided by Mr. Chen), Interviews, questionnaire (we added up the problems libraries might face to assist the integrity of the web)

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Because of the nature of the Cyberfair Competition, which is the need to reach out to certain communities and to contact numerous associations and such, the team must get used to and find different methods of communication to ensure the smooth completion of this project. These were the methods the team used: 1. Calling Mr. Chen with a cellphone to introduce cyber fair, our topic, and our school. 2. Using text messaging services to arrange an interview with Mr. Chen. 3. Using email to send a copy of interview questions to Mr. Chen for review.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our project make differences with others through all kinds of things, such as the appearance of website, the interview photos and videos, and the content of the website. People did learn about what is independent bookstore and how it works. We established new working relationships with other teachers in the school to introduce independent bookstore. Other teachers and students in the school looked at our website pages. The feedback is mostly good. However, there are some mistakes in our website and we solved it quickly. Out website helped people to know what independent bookstore is. Also, our website set a purpose to let more people know about independent bookstore.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We spent a lot of time and efforts to work on our project, and the accomplishment we have today is belongs to not only our group members, but also the people who have helped us in a long term. We got much assistance from different people in order to complete our cyber fair topic. Therefore, we would like to appreciate their supports. First of all, we would like to express our thanks to our school, Kang Chiao International School. Our school provided abundant resources and space to us in order to do our research. We would like to appreciate our school trust and gave us such an opportunity to participate in this competition on behalf of the school. Furthermore, we would like to appreciate our instructors, which are Mr. Shih Hsuan, Mr. Ying-Tsong, and Ms. Harriet. We believe that we would not have today’s works without their helps. They taught us everything we didn’t know patiently and progressively; they resolved every difficulty along the long way; they sacrificed their times to have a better achievement for us. Therefore, they are the people we would like to appreciate. The last person we would like to appreciate is Mr. Chen, which is the most important soul for this project. Mr. Chen is a significant person for the culture of independent bookshop. He agreed to let us interview him without any consider or doubt. He explained and answered every question we have asked with patient and earnest. Mr. Chen led us understand more about the culture of independent bookshop. Without the helps from these indispensable people we mentioned before, we would not have the result today; therefore, we would like to give them great thanks and appreciate them sincerely.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Our group spent a lot of time on this project. We learned how to create a website, we learned how to photoshop the photo, and we also tried to interview with Mr. Chen. We found out that there is over a thousand of independent bookshop in Taiwan. If we didn't participate this competition, maybe people in our group will not know what independent bookshop is.
