Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Taipei City is one of the major cities in Taiwan that have developed heavily. In addition, the well-known Taipei City has high political and economic development, and the cultural development is something that could not be ignored. National Palace Museum is of the places that have reserved the culture of Taipei City. As one of the Taiwanese citizens, we deeply appreciate the importance of cultural reservation, so we decided to visit “Hall of Long” in Taipei City, Zhongshan District.“Hall of Long” is established by Mao-Long Li, who is an expert in deterioration of Classical Chinese Scroll Paintings. This personal workshop is located in Taipei, Taiwan. Due to the moisture in Taiwan, many artworks are defective. Therefore,“Hall of Long” stands as an important platform on repairing the scroll paintings.

2. Summary of Our Project

Mao-Long Lin is currently a specialist for restoration of classical Chinese scroll paintings. He has been participating in scroll painting restoration for 15 years already. He had worked for the mounting department of National Palace Museum (NPM) for several years. Now, he holds his personal studio for restoring scroll paintings. Restoration is a skill to repair damaged artwork. It requires a lot of time and energy for each piece of artwork but it is the only way to save and maintain a damage artwork. Though it has always been an important job, Mr. Lin had a hard time maintaining his income just based on restoration. However, his passion towards art drives him through difficulties and became a well-known specialist in his field.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:4-6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:not sure

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Kang Chiao International School uses a 100MB fiber-optic scholastic network, which allows us to utilize the Internet to search for information as well as to share it among members.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1. Gathering information: Since restoration of classical chinese scroll paintings isn’t a well-known skill and knowledge in current society, we couldn’t directly access to the information we need. In order to gather information we needed, we spent more time reading reports and academic research related to our topic. 2. Interview: Mr. Lin got into a car accident before our interview therefore we couldn’t had a direct interview with Mr. Lin. At the end, we finished our interview through phone call. Because we didn’t had the direct interview, we don’t have enough pictures or images to use. Direct resource was limited. Fortunately, Mr. Lin provided us some picture from his past and also gave us the right to use photos on his blog. 3. Time management: During the researching progress, we have little time to spend together due to school work and personal things to do. Although we have scheduled club time to discuss, but the time isn’t enough for us to finish all the work. At last, we used several days in our winter break to finish up the work and we realize how important it is to keep everything on schedule. 4. Integrating information: We used a lot of time to gather and search for information, but didn’t know how to put all of the information into categories. After discussion, we decided to put information into different big categories and then split them into detailed, small categories. This skill help us on researching and we will definitely use it in our future. 5. Teamwork: We had several arguments while searching and analysing. However, we always discuss and talk it out. We learned how important teamwork is, not only saving time but also making improvements.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

* Laptop Windows 7 and MacBook Pro OSX - record interview and operate project * Telephones - contact members and teacher * Digital Camera - take pictures * Adobe Photoshop CS3 & CS6(MacBook Pro) - photo editing * Microsoft Office Word 2010 & 2011(MacBook Pro) & 2013 - * Dreamweaver CS3 & CS6(MacBook Pro) - website design and upload * Dreamweaver CS6 - software reference book * Interview - Independent Volunteer Association interview * USB - transfer informations

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

After a long interview with Mr. Lin, he shared his unforgettable life with scroll painting restoring. We found this technology amazing and very important to our culture. However, Mr. Lin also told us about how he wished to pass down this technology and he wanted to raise more attention on scroll paintings. Our project is an integration of every information related to restoration. Hopefully, we can raise more attention on scroll painting and let more people see this beauty in Chinese culture.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

This topic is a great challenge for us. Even in Taiwan, there are only few people understand this technique. Luckily, we can find some informations on the internet. At the beginning, we are all unfamiliar with each other; we have some inevitable disagreements in our opinions, so we argued a lot. We did not have enough basic skill of making a website and filming a video, but we willing to take the time to learn these techniques. For us, the biggest change is our attitude; this changes from passive to active, which also make us more understand each other. Originally, we think it is easy to do. But, in the process, we found many tiny details ( For example, data arrangement and website making, etc) that we have to notice again and again. Teachers helped us a lot; when we have any misunderstanding, they will always guide us step by step.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We asked the seniors that had participated in last year's cyberfair to give us some ideas to complete our entries. We also appreciate a lot to the people that had helped us to fill in our ancient calligraphy's surveys. Last but not least, we fully appreciate the cooperation of Mr. Mao-Long Li. He accepted our telephone interview although he had a car accident. He also agreed to let us use the pictures on his blog.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We spent a lot of time creating the questionnaire and survey. We weren’t familiar with writing questions, integrating forms, especially designing the questionnaire. At first we put in more professional and academic questions. After a discussion with our teacher, we found out our forms couldn’t really reflect people’s opinion since it isn’t a well-known technology. Therefore, we designed another one to be closer to people’s daily life. We learned a lot from the experience, including the use of google form.
