Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our school is located in Da-an District, Taipei City.Taipei is Taiwan's best city. There are about 260 million people in Taipei City.Taiwan currently has four nuclear power plants, of which three are running.Northern two nuclear power plants and the nuclear power plant, which is going to stop building, is within 40 km from downtown Taipei.Once a nuclear disaster occurs, it is bound to evacuate more people. At the same time, it is difficult to imagine the consequences. It will make the island into crisis.Taiwan did not happen nuclear disasters in the past. The Government does not provide enough information to the general public, so the general public does not think nuclear disaster would happen and would not notice how to prevent nuclear disaster. But now, we should learn lessons from the Fukushima nuclear disaster. The government and the people should have a sense of crisis for related disaster preparedness, or it will be too late.

2. Summary of Our Project

Recently, the news topic is often related to the nuclear power plant issue. Without nuclear power, what will replace nuclear energy? Will alternative energy sources increase the cost of electricity generation, electricity and affect people's livelihood, quality of power supply? Will alternative energy sources be relatively clean without pollution?Although nuclear power is known as clean energy, accidents happened at Three Mile Island of the United States, Chernobyl of Russia, and Fukushima of Japan.Once a nuclear disaster occurs, it not only has a significant impact on the economy, and even threatens the health and lives of residents. For ecology, the impact is great. At present, Taiwan society appears possession of nuclear / anti-nuclear different sounds. Possession of nuclear side considers nuclear power is clean, safe, and cheap. Anti-nuclear party advocates renewable energy is safe, environmentally friendly, sustainable use.In any case, as part of living in Taiwan, we should cherish our beautiful land, and plan for a good living environment.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:21-50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:none

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

[Collection and collation of data] After we determine the topic, we spent a lot of effort to find relevant information from internet and library.Because of too much relevant information, we put a lot of effort on assigning each person to read and finally discussed with the teacher. We had a lot of effort in data compilation. We organized the interview content, recorded respondents' thoughts and after finishing, we showed respondents draft for double check.Although we had to spend more time, but we thought we can make the whole case study more complete. ?Terminology? Since the case study based on the theme of nuclear power plants, it includes nuclear-related terminologies involved, so we felt difficult when we wrote the content. Therefore, we must learn the relevant technical terms in advance. [Dfficulties] When making web pages, we need to use a lot of software. To us, it’s hard. So we asked help from the teachers, and practice again and again. Finally, we all became more familiar on the page making and had a lot of confidence.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

In this learning journey, we involved in case study and learned a lot of valuable experience and knowledge. From the process of data collection and visit, we have a deeper understanding of energy, nuclear disaster, environmental protection and other related subjects. In the process, we got not only help, but also a lot of encouragement and support from the teachers and other people.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

First, the combination of environmental education programs Purpose of environmental education is to cultivate people's awareness of environmental protection and local care, and teach us the correct protection central knowledge, attitude and behavior of caring for the environment, then work together to create a more healthy and comfortable living environment. With environmental education course, let us understand the pros and cons of nuclear power and green energy more, and hope that we can care for our communities and the planet in correct way. Second, the combination of local education courses We used Wednesday afternoon to do data collection and film, then edited the information and research result on a web page to share with people.Hope you can learn more about our home environment, and hope you guard our home with concrete actions. Third, the combination of nature and life science and technology courses Through science and technology tools - digital cameras, digital voice recorder, we gathered up the things we visited. At the same time, we also queried information through the internet, and transmitted our study and research progress reports on time to Internet.More importantly, we used all kinds of hardware and software tools which we have learned to make a web page to share what we learned. Fourth, the combination of mathematics courses In this case study, the research questionnaire design is one of our sources. After questionnaire classification, statistics, computer key-in work, finally analysis showed.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We personally visited environmentalists, government officials and scholars and experts and other related personnel. We learned more about nuclear energy and environmental protection. Use the Internet to find relevant web page to collect the required information. When we visited, we took pictures and video. Use the scanner to do image processing and printer is used to reproduce the information circulated. Contact Interviews by telephone and fax. Storage, transfer photos and related information. Save relevant information to a PC without web connection. Through drawing image to make web content more lively and interesting.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Visit and interview: According to the case study program, we personally interview environmental experts, government officials and school principals, and want to learn more knowledge about nuclear energy and environmental protection. Expert advice: According to the research themes and content, we visit the Government Nuclear Regulatory authorities, environmental experts, community chief, and school principal. We hope to learn more knowledge of nuclear energy and environmental protection as well as their views on nuclear energy from the visit. Parental Involvement: Parents are encouraged to become part of us and join our visit or participate in research activities. And at any time, they provide support and assistance. Community Interview: Let residents know the theme and purpose of our research through field visits and surveys, and we can understand the community views on the nuclear issue and their concept of energy saving and environmental protection.Meanwhile, we advocate the concept of environmental protection, energy saving and the nuclear crisis. School Promotion: Principal and directors always supported our case study. Principal and directors and took every opportunity to let everyone know our theme; and also communicated to parents, and asked them to provide resources to assist. Principal and directors can be said that the role of our best 'ambassadors' and spokespersons.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The reasons of Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, Fukushima nuclear disasters occurred are natural disaster or man-made disaster. Those told us we have to think more.Taiwan is a small island, which located in the Pacific seismic belt. Every year, typhoons and earthquakes attack Taiwan, so we have to think about whether Taiwan's nuclear power plant can withstand earthquakes, tsunami damage.Although the Government continued to check the the safety of nuclear power plants, and also thought more on the emergency treatment, this does not mean that absolutely safe, because natural disasters becomes impossible to predict.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We collected, read a lot of information, and the division of labor and mutual discussions, then organized the report step by step.Sources of information are from books, journals, the web, and the information provided by the visitor. We annotated references of sources and pictures on our web page.We also formally cited with provider consent.Thank people who provide us information. With your help, we finally make a great web page.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Nuclear power has its importance. Some countries argued that other new energy sources can not play the leading role in the short term.Once stopped nuclear power will inevitably drag on the economy. So as long as we use it properly, it has more good than harm. Some countries believe nuclear energy can not be predicted. Some countries are more cautious. They began a comprehensive review of nuclear power, and immediately suspend or terminate future development of nuclear power plans, which do not meet safety standards and engineering cease and so on.Therefore, we can see different nuclear policy attitudes from various countries. As long as we have nuclear power, we have to think more.
