1. Description of Our Community

Changhua County is located in the central part of Taiwan. Changhua has been famous for its fertile soil and wild plain. Right here, people can try all kinds of fruits, litchi, dragon fruit, grapes…etc. Local snacks, like fried oyster omelet, meat ball are famous and delicious. Besides, the Buddha Mountain and the historical architectures in Changhua are attractive. All of these make it the smallest county in Taiwan island but has the most residents. People here are kind and gentle.

2. Summary of Our Project

In this project, we’ll report the story of the foster parents and their children. How the foster parents, Daddy and Mommy Wu, take care of their 20 children with love. How they brought the kids love and hope.Daddy and Mommy Wu, live in Hemei Township. Mommy Wu used to be a babysitter. Because of their love for kids, they become foster parents after retirement. In order to give the kids a comfortable and warm home, they bought a big house. The smiles on kids faces satisfy their mind.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The obstacles we encountered were many: the technique of managing information, blurry pictures, the size of files, photography, and editing the web pages. It was difficult to complete this project alone. Therefore, the students were taught the techniques of camera operation, and photography after regular school hours. We were divided into groups to learn web design. In this setting, we were able to exchange ideas, conduct interviews, and monitor the progress.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Our participation in International School Cyber Fair gave us the opportunity to raise the awareness of our own community, to understand the importance of team work, and to appreciate the dedication of the foster parents.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our activities and research for this project improved our computer literacy, interpersonal communication; they taught us empathy, the importance of teamwork, and mutual respect, while we learned to think and solve problems independently. All these are what our content standard hopes to achieve.

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

To complete this project, we used computers, telephones, camera for still pictures and video-taping, scanners, computer software etc. to organize our files, do web design, share information, record, and edit sound and video files…

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

After we decided that we wanted to do a touching story, in the process of choosing the suitable interviewees, we discovered that one of our student was once under the care of Mommy Wu, the main character of our story. Therefore, our students followed that connection, using email, interviews to learn the story of the Wus. We published it on our school web page and shared it on Face Book with the broader community.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our project is to give foster family face and voice; we want to give them recognition for the love and devotion for the unfortunate children- hoping that more people will emulate the Wus’s, and make this a better world for everybody.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Thanks to our teacher’s leadership, advice and technical help; Daddy and Mommy Wus’ candor; and our parents’ support, we were able to complete this project. Also, we are grateful that Sister Chen and Auntie Huang helped us with translation; this way we have web page in English.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We realized Cyber Fair is not a simple task that few pictures few paragraphs of writing would suffice. Once we started on this project, it seemed to take over everything. We sacrificed our weekends to do interviews. We used after school hours to do research. We learned time-management. And Most of all, we were very moved by the love and dedication of Mommy and Daddy Wu for the foster children.
