Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our school is located in the neighborhood of Taoyuan Cultural District. The parents are in the comparatively high socio-economic status, so they stress much more on children's education. Many parents are willing to be school volunteers to help establishing a better educational environment for the children. A group of moms join the school counseling team to promote children’s education of both emotion management and character in the classrooms. In addition to getting familiar with the course content, they need to spend a lot of time learning presentation/ teaching skills since they didn’t go to education-related departments in school. There is more manpower in the school’s counseling office than that in any other school. There is a psychological consultation teacher and a professional social worker in the office. Both of them are willing to help volunteer moms to improve themselves through improving courses. Teachers and volunteers help each other to give hands to students in need of help.

2. Summary of Our Project

School volunteers with the red uniform walk around every corner of the school. The volunteers we are the most familiar with are the counseling volunteers coming to the classrooms and giving courses every Monday and Friday. Every time when we saw they share their knowledge and present exaggerate performances on stage, it’s hard to believe that they are just parents, not teachers, from their confidence and eloquence. Some moms join the small-group counseling group. They accompany some children to play games at the self-study time in the morning to find the strength to become better. To we students, volunteer moms just come to take classes. However, we don’t know they spend their own time improving themselves to give classes better, even discuss some cases with the school’s counseling teacher to make their own progress. We hope that we can make an in-depth exploration to understand the counseling volunteers’ efforts and dedication through this project.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

School network is academic network .Because members of team are students and teachers, it is mainly used for editing research data by computer and collecting related data by school network environment

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1. The ability to make an interview      Making an interview is quite different from having a chat at the daily life. It’s not necessary to think about what we need to say when we talk to our classmates. We just say what came to our mind. But it isn’t the case when we make an interview. We need to make the interviewee understand what we ask and get the information we desire. In order to help us to fit into the project theme, Mr. Lin asked us to draw a mind map, list our questions, and rehearse the interviews to lower our anxiety.

2. Time Management     All of us are fifth graders. The time we had to work on the project was limited within the school time because we had other learning tasks arranged by our parents after school. All the work of the project needed to be done at the break time (including the lunch break) at school. We needed to make the interviews and discussions as well as organize the data in the very limited time. We had to use part of our class time to complete the survey and interviews required to complete the project because we found some counseling group activities were near the end when we set the project theme. We still enjoyed in exploring the project even when we felt very exhausted.

3. Data Collection:      The counseling volunteers provide help to the students in need in each class. Our teacher said that most of the personal data were confidential due to the …

5. Our Project Sound Bite

It took more than 3 months from deciding the theme to completing the project. We feel the progress we made. In the beginning, with our heads down, we could only read our draft in whispering asking questions. Then we could make interviews without any haste. At last, we even could confidently and eloquently share our project with the lower graders in their classrooms. Our parent also noticed our progress. In the process, in addition to the improving the ability to solve problems, we changed our view about volunteers. It requires the 'will' not only to help but also to get improved constantly in order to help more people. Although we still cannot help others like the volunteers, we share with our classmates the spirit of the volunteers and hope more people can join to be volunteers to help others in the future.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

1.Humanity and Sympathy   'Mutual cooperation' and 'sympathy' are the good deeds that our teachers and parents frequently refer to in reminding us to carry out, but we aren’t quite clear how we can make it. In this project, we made the interviews with the volunteer moms and teachers. We participated in the counseling activities and growth courses. We learned from them that we can drop the self-perfectionism trying to help our classmates in need of support in learning or in daily life and accompany them to make progress slowly.

2.Active Exploration At school, we learn with textbooks. We know what we are supposed to learn as long as we read the textbook. But we learn from this project that learning is not just from the textbooks, we probably find none from the textbooks. The only thing we can do is searching step by step. At first, we didn’t know what we could do to introduce the counseling volunteers. We had no ideas until we made observation and interviews then we got more data. We met some difficulties such as the small-group counseling activity was near the end as well as the counseling volunteers were not available to receive our interviews. In spite of these setbacks, we solved the problems one by one and completed the project with the assistance of our teachers.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

The counseling volunteers are a devoted team. Few students will notice these volunteers not only plan a lot of courses for the students in need or take many courses to get self-improved. They even take those courses at their own expense. It’s worth imitating their learning strength and vitality strength of the team. At the same time, we share the project and tell our classmates and lower graders what we saw and heard about the counseling volunteers so that they can express their thanks to the counseling volunteers after they have attended the counseling classes.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Although being usually hidden in the campus, these enthusiastic volunteers can be seen in some particular occasion in addition to life education or EQ courses.        After in-depth exploration, we found they also give helps to the students in need in every class. They take part in the growth courses designed for them to improve their counseling capability for these students. Some volunteer moms even attend other related courses outside of the school then share their findings with other volunteer moms. It’s rare to see a volunteer team that is full of vitality and learning motivation. We hope, through the project, we can make more people get to know counseling volunteers and their hard work, be grateful for what they have contributed quietly, and encourage more people to join the volunteer team.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

(1)Counseling volunteers:(a)Receive the interviews.(b)Provide the information about the service of the counseling volunteers.(c)Provide related photos (2)Teachers in the Counseling Office:(a)Receive the interviews.(b)Provide the information about the service of the counseling volunteers.(c)Provide related photos.(d)Guidance and check in the completion of the project’s web pages.(e)English translation.(3)Other teachers:(a) Assistance in the process of research.(b)Assistance in the sharing the presentation

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

In the project, we find that we cannot look at things by the surface. It’s just like the case of choosing the counseling volunteers as our project theme. We would think that nothing needed to say about them because they take a course for us only once a week. But the teacher suggested that we could first collect data before we made our decision. We found the counseling volunteers not only help the students in need but also support various school activities, they even take lessons to learn. We got these facts after we explored by and by. So we no longer use previous experience or listen to others to learn, but get the most accurate knowledge by self-exploration step by step.
