Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Bu Dai Neighborhood is in Guanmiao District, Tainan, Taiwan. It includes six villages which are Da Lu Jou, Tsau Pi, Ba Jia Tsai Liu, Wan Chai, Ma Chou and Bu Dai Wei. In Japanese colonial era more which was about 60 years ago, Rui-Long Huang who was the head of a neighborhood suggested naming this area as Bu Dai Bau. Later the government named this area as Bu Dai Village. However, because of the administrative establishment the government changed its name, and now we called it Bu Dai Neighborhood which is the largest neighborhood in Guanmiao District. The most important river in this area is River Erren, and it provides abundant water. It provides some of neighborhoods abundant water. Although there are only a few farmlands, people here make a living by farming. Residents here are optimistic and willing to help each other. Besides, the population here is stable. Recently the setting of the sophisticated machinery industry helps to enhance the overall the quality of life and also maintain simplicity. We can call it a paradise.

2. Summary of Our Project

As we all know, the most important parts of the machine is the 'screw', and Tainan Guanmiao Bu-dai community because of Taiwan's largest industrial city near the 'Kaohsiung' traffic from the past and the relatively cheap cost of land acquisition, plus residents quality is quite good, hard-working effort, so to attract a lot of screws in the local factories upstream and downstream industries, and gradually, the screw industry has become one of the characteristics of local industries.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:21-50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Starting from grade 3, the students are exposed to basic computer-related courses, at least once a week. Besides, computer generated visual aids will also be used in daily courses as well. With the network bandwidth of 100MB, it is more than sufficient in normal usage time. This time we put a lot of efforts in participating the Cyber-fair; using the voice recorder and digital camera to record the event as well as searching for information related to Golf & Country Club on internet before hand]. The information collected are will be processed and transformed into electronic files and further developed into a participatory website. We then share the results with classmates and teachers by using LCD projectors and computers. We are looking forward to come out with a complete and detailed report on “Screw code” and further driven the positive development of the local community.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

They are new students so I have to slowly lead them into the thematic areas of exploration. And this theme - screw industry is also a new try! In fact, it is very hard and dangerous in the screw factory. In addition to endure hot environment, we have to pay attention to the discharge of iron. If they don’t pay attention, the skin will be cut. In addition, it is also a very noisy environment, sound mechanical operation is often as high as 85 dB or more,. The employees must wear earplugs in order to work here for a long time. Because we want to explore the topic so of course we have to enter the factory to interview and experience which is the biggest challenge we have.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We hope that students can experience this topic and know how hard they parents work. Besides, they can know the local industry - screw. Understand deeply every detail of screw industry. Maybe one day, we can add new ideas for the business in decades and bring a better future to the community.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

1. Actually we use smart phones (including decibel meter and audio meter), and also the use of digital cameras, desktop PC, wireless base station and other information equipment. 2. These digital tools can help us be able to review records or interviews quickly, and also to provide assistance quickly made to help author static and dynamic image record, which will help aggregated data. 3. After the operation habit digital tools, we can learn more operating mode digital software, increasing their capacity and also contribute to the future. When we do special studies center quickly, we can find the problem and solve the problem cuts.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Most of the students visit and explore the record. The initial contact with the screw-related process, students also slightly frightened look. But after getting used to it, they are getting more and more curious about the details, and more and more dared to ask . Sometimes students ask questions even adults can imagine. We are surprised about the clever reaction of the students, and also about their ability to innovate unfolded impressed.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We hope this case study can bring the students a good understanding of the impact of the community which has more than thirty years of industry and the community to make these screws companies understand that the school cares about the community, and even actively bring community characteristic industry into the curriculum in orderto lead students to explore and learn. We expect that one day these industries which have been in the hands of his father or grandfather for decades can assure delivered to inherit and even more successful.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Because there are some parents including school’s parenting of school’s president that work in screw related companies. So these people have given strong support. Let students to visit the factory (actually factory work environment is quite dangerous) and have an interview which make thematic studies enriched. The research team are grateful for the support of these parents. We hope that we can give them a big hug and say: Thank you very much!

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Thematic research process lasts for months. Although the process has some pain, but after the completion of aIt is a great feeling. In this process of exploration, in addition to know more about the screw industry, but also more able to understand the parents normally work. In a bunch of machines rumbling sound of the environment, at any time there may be ejected iron ring. They sweat to work up to 35 degrees in the summer hut factory, these are not usually stable students at the school can fully appreciate the class. However, through this thematic exploration, the students can really feel how they parents work. They will be more considerate to the hard-working parents. They also hope that the community industry grow further. When the students grow up, perhaps they can improve the working environment.
