Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Description of the Local Community Taichung, a city connected with the world with Cultural-Creative industry and art, owns not only many historical relics and sites, but a group of prominent artists, therefore playing an important part in Taiwan’s cultural and art development. As these people’s creative works are spread to every corner of Taiwan, the government is devoted to preserving multiculturalism, making the this vibrant city seen by the world.

2. Summary of Our Project

On the gate of Taichung’s famous attraction ‘Miyahara’, we saw beautiful and vintage fonts. After asking the store, we got to know ’Wang's-style Font’, which is designed by Wang Shui-He. We found more surprising historical materials after the start of the research. It turned out that the major Chinese computer font styles are mostly created by Wang Shui-He, who lives in Taichung just like us. The information about Wang Shui-He, however, is so rare and imprecise that we decide to make our project the most complete bibliography of Wang Shui-He.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

The internet in the computer lab is connected by ADSL at school and all the computers at school are connected with each other by optical fiber cable, which makes the team do the research more fluently and more conveniently.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Mr. Wang, who has got two types of cancers, is ninety years old now. After the treatment for laryngo-carcinoma (throat cancer) in 1970, he could talk no more. Therefore, the interview would be very challenging, and most of all the interviews have to rely on his son’s assistance. Moreover, there’s a lot of pressure from study for us senior high students. In addition, we found that there isn’t much information left about Wang Shui-He. That is, we can only get those precious historical data through interviews.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

After the interview, we realize the importance of teamwork. Only by cooperating systematically can we gear up efficiently. In addition, in the process of pre-work, we found that the information of Wang on the Internet is rare. Therefore we hope to share Wang’s stories and art works with those who are eager to be inspired by the master.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

As the legend of art in Taiwan, Wang has been the founder of Taichung sculpture association. With numerous outstanding artists having been instructed by him, Wang is virtually the very one who ignited the fire of art in Central Taiwan, thus giving the city the name “Culture Capital.” Wang is definitely the person worthy of our research and recording.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

digital camera, Cell phone, Table/laptop, USB, Fiber optic networks and ADSL broadband network, Hard Drive, Window XP,Window 8, Microsoft Office Window 2007?2010, Adobe Dreamweaver, Photo Impact, Dropbox, Paint, Facebook and Line

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Via Wang’s granddaughter, we successfully got in touch with Wang. Given that Wang once got throat cancer, thus unable to articulate clearly, we are lucky to get aid from Wang’s son, architect Wang Wen Fan, who can “translate” Wang’s speech for us. During the interview with Wang, we also understand the true spirit of his masterpiece and the determination of the artist. We even had the chance to appreciate countless amazing works. As the ambassadors of The Internet Exhibition, we would like to get Taiwan and the world to know Wang by this web page we made.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

After the interview with Wang, we young generation come to realize that there are so many masterpieces around us, which were actually created by the same artist, Wang. The art genres Wang has “conquered” include fine art, sculpture, architecture, dress design, word design and many other things concerning beauty. All the members of our team have practically been feasted with the best art works in our country during the period.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

In order to get more detailed and exact material, we went to Wang’s residence two times to interview him. Given the fact that Wang once got Laryngeal (throat cancer), we need Wang’s son, architect Wang Wen Fan, to ‘translate” Wang’s speech for us. Moreover, the city hall also offered us some past record of Wang. However, it’s not abundant enough for us to learn the profile of the art master.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We find that the beauty of art is not to be restricted to a given frame. Wang used to earn his living by painting the movie billboard. Others all had their paintings on the given board; however, Wong did not. He added a small board on the top of the board to present the top of the sword or the beautiful face of the lead Character, which immediately caught people’s attention, therefore getting a big success and others’ imitation. To Wong, art is everywhere. He is a self-made person who learned everything he’s interested by trying, and to our surprise, most of his tries amounted to fantastic arts. Not only paintings and sculptures but his clothes and buildings are also designed by Wong himself. Nevertheless, Wong keeps reminding us that his masterpieces mostly come from his perspiration rather than his inspiration. He encourages us to keep focusing on our talents and interests and strive hard to cultivate them. And then, we high school students can also become masters in certain fields one day.
