Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

A few years ago, Kaohsiung was still a highly-developed industrial city, which gradually evolves into a metropolitan where businesses are booming now. In 2010, the central government reorganized jurisdiction of some major cities and counties. Because of this, Kaohsiung city and kaohsiung county were merged into a single municipality, endowing Kaohsiung not only businesses, but scattered agricultural industry mostly in the suburbs of the township. In recent years, The environment in Kaohsiung is positively transformed. While there are still factories causing ecological damage and air pollution around us, there are also an increasing number of green parkland and wetlands lying from north to south. Still, Kaohsiung City Government’s actively improving the ecological environment, aiming to upgrade the quality of life, really creates a better livable Kaohsiung Municipality for its citizens. Therefore, Niaosong Wetland Park, situated in the suburbs, is an index manifesting that Kaohsiung is a city suitable for living. By setting up a website guiding eco-tour for Niaosong wetland. And as volunteers we can help people learn to use IT QR-Code barcode to secure information about our wetlands, enhancing Kaohsiung citizens’ recognition of it. As long as the citizen are willing to participate in the wetlands activities and really learn something, then the ecological environment in Kaohsiung is sure to improve. Let’s get together to change Kaohsiung for the better.

2. Summary of Our Project

The pivot of this project is Kaohsiung Niaosong Wetland Park. In order to create more opportunities for people to have much more understanding of it, and be willing to spend more time exploring its ecological environment, appreciating birds, insects, plants etc., there. Therefore, cooperating with Kaohsiung Wild Bird Society, our team explores Niaosong wetlands and sets up a website for Niaosong wetland ecological tour, so that people can know more about Niaosong wetlands, and learn of the educational activities held by Kaohsiung Wild Bird Society. Doing so, people can learn the habotudes of birds, insects and plant, as well as ecological situations. Hopefully, Niaosong wetlands can become a shrine of entertainment and education.

(7)Microsoft Excel 2010: To collect and organize questionnaire data and compose pie charts. (8)Line: The most-often used messaging App by the Cyberfair team members. From the beginning to the completion of the Cyberfair project, we highly depend on it as a communication platform, day and night. (9)MAC i-Pad mini: This tablet is used to take pictures. (10)Cell phones: To contact with team members and take pictures during the making of the Cyberfair project. (11) USB Flash Drive: To save …

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The problems we have to overcome are quite a many. The most important one is about time management and job assigning. Our team includes students from the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth graders, making it hard to come to an agreed schedule. For example, when the twelfth graders are to take simulation tests or prepare for certificate-awarding tests, they cannot make much time doing the project. As a result, we divide the job according to our grades. The twelfth graders are responsible for the first part of the project, while the tenth and eleventh graders are in charge of interviewing, questionnaire writing, monitoring the lunch break meetings, and doing the later part of the project, making it much more convenient for everyone to coordinate. To make up for periodical exams, we schedule a timetable to check and main the whole team assignments.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We are very glad that we have grabbed the opportunity to take part in doing the Cyberfair 2016 Project. Most of us never had the experience of doing any project. In the beginning, we only had a blurry understanding. With the instructors’ teaching, we gradually gtet the whole picture. It is not easy to do a project, which needs everyone’s working together and cooperation. During the process, we not only are familiar with web page writing software, but also learn the SOPs of writing web pages. Though collecting the data from the Park and dispatching the questionnaires have cost us many holidays and lunch break time, the team members cultivate feelings of comradeship. Learning the importance of teamwork is a rare opportunity.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We are a team composed of three grades of Department of Information Processing of Kaohsiung commercial High School. Courses offered by the three grades, such as information processing, multimedia production, web production, and project production, are closely related to PBL learning, to our advantage of doing the Cyberfair project. We are so lucky that we can apply what we learn to the project, realizing and fully utilizing the classroom knowledge.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

As students, normally we spend most of our learning at school. The school computer software and hardware are so advanced that we take good advantage of Computer Classrooms, doing our project, collecting data, and writing wet pages. Web lines on campus are wide-band 100Mbps FTTB from Chunghwa Telecom., which can easily and smoothly connect with other schools. The actual out-bound test speed is 86Mbps. We also do our assignments and communicate with one another using our own computers and ADSL provided by the Chunghwa Telecom.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In the process of doing the project, our team perceives the importance of understanding ecological environments. Everyone has to do his or her share to improve the surroundings. Thus, we apply skills and knowledge we learn in class to the fabrication of the project and ecological tour guiding website, which is connecting to QR-Code and voice navigation functions, giving the public a chance to understand more about Niaosong Wetland Park. Since wetlands are an important factor of a city, hopefully, when the general public surf our tour guiding website, they will know that Kaohsiung is really an ecologically abundant city, not only having heavy industries. During the process, we become the Park’s volunteers. In addition to fabricate the website, recording voice commentaries, laying out QR-Code signs, and partaking in all kinds of promotional activities, we also interview and instruct the visitors to the Park how to save and retrieve ecological tour guiding website by using QR-Code function through the Park’s QR-Code explanatory signs.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Normally, people think that a park is just a place to relax. But once they are instructed to sue QR-Code App to locate information of Niaosong Wetland Park, they find that visiting the Park can be a adventure in technology. Even better, they can combine learning and relaxation with modern technology. Before we did the Cyberfair project, Mr. Cheng took us there. At that time, most people just went there to have walks. Only a few of the paid serious attention to wildlife there. But after our instructions in employing QR-Code to observe animal and plants there, their attitudes have changed a lot.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Our family members, especially our parents are the ones who have no way to shun away. In the very beginning of us doing the project, they've complained about our going home late too often and studying too less. But with time passing, they find that we take the project really seriously. To their great joy, we use our computers to search materials for the project, not playing online games. Whenever we have to go to school on weekends for extra project assignments, they are happy to take us there. Our siblings quarrel with us less often. When informed of our doing the project, teachers give us encouraging words. Classmates willingly lend their notes taken in class to us. District librarians also giving us their helping hands in locating the necessary books, journals, and magazines. Some organizations, especially Kaohsiung Wild Bird Society help us throughout the project. With so much assistance, we push ourselves even harder to finish the job.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

The ecological tour guiding website produced by the Cyberfair Team gets positive response from school teaching staff and volunteers from both Kaohsiung Wild Bird Society and Niaosong Wetland Park. They all favorably think that the color arrangement and configuration of the project’s layout are so unique that they closely match the theme of a website featuring ecology. Since the website structure is clear and concise, users can easily learn how to log on to it, so is the case with QR-Code operation. Saving and retrieving ecological species tour guiding functions through QR-Code is both convenient and practical. And the web pages will be full of varieties and users can gain more knowledge on species if audio touring and video linking functions are added.
