Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Tjanjhong, Center of Farmland, is surrounded by paddy fields and suitable for cultivating rice. The town is noted for growing Rice No. 9 of TaiGeng.

Toanjhong is located around the foot of Mt. Bagua and part of Changhua County. Its north is She-tou, its east is Min-jian, its south is Si-jhou and Er-shui, and its west is Tianwei and Beidou. There are 22 villages, 331 neighborhoods, and 12063 households in Tianjhong. The area of Tianjhong is 34.6056 square kilometer and the number of population is 42745 (The record in 2014 from the department of household registration).

The main transportation in Tianjhong is highway and railway. Currently, the high speed railway under construction is located on Da-she Road and open to traffic in July of 2015.

2. Summary of Our Project

To make more people know about Tianjhong, we found out the famous ancient hospital- Jing Sung Hospital (Jing Sung Clinic now) as the start point to learn the development of medical care in Tianjhong in early times. Besides, we introduce the Dr. Jing Sung Chen's family as well.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:21-50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

There are two computer classrooms in our school with connection to the Internet. We make use of the computers to get our work done at school. And every member in our group also has a personal computer with connection to the Internet at home. So we can search and collect data at home too.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

This is our first time to do this project, so we met a lot of difficulties.

1. We have no experience to create a webpage, so the progress was quite slow in the beginning.

2. During the discussion, we often had different opinions and it took time to negotiate with each other.

3. The time control is not good, so we were in a hurry to finish up the work before the deadline.

4. We had few ideas to design the webpage and edit the photos and texts effectively.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We visited the Jing Sung Hospital and the Shou Shan Hall and interviewed Dr. Shi-zai Chen. During the process, we took plenty of photos and learned about the history of the Chen family during the different periods of Taiwan. When we organized these data and photos to create our own webpage, we were all very excited and felt worthy for the labor we paid in these months.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

History: Our project not only focuses on the building of the hospital but also introduce the celebrities in the Chen family. It can be traced back to the scholar Shao-nian Chen during the period of Qing Dynasty, his grandson, Dr. Jing Sung Chen and his great-grandson, Dr. Shi-zai Chen during the period of Japanese ruled. The development of Chen's medical career transfers from Japanese medical care style to western medical care style, which could be an evidence to show the affection of American culture.

Civilization: Both Dr. Jing Sung Chen and Dr. Shi-zai Chen master medical skills, and further, they have noble medical ethics. The father and the son are sympathetic to help the poor and make their impact on others, which is correspondent to the ethic concepts mentioned in civilization classes.

Health: Dr. Chen cured the patients and taught the patients how to make their lives healthy and to avoid the attack of diseases.

Computer: We directly searched information and pictures on the Internet, designed our webpage with the software, Namo WebEdito, and edit photos with the software, Photocap. We learned how to make use of the software in computer class at school. The teacher suggested us that we should choose simple and bright color as the background and take care of the size of photos and texts, which would make the webpage more beautiful.

Integrative Activities: When we discussed about our project, we learned how to collaborate with each other and realized what cooperation really means. With the team work, we can effectively conduct our project and we all know that it is impossible for solely one person to finish up the project by himself.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We made use of creating a webpage to make local residents and other people know more about the beauty of Tianjhong. We think it's our mission to promote our hometown. We are not political officers but we regard ourselves as the endorsers for our hometown, Tianjhong. We are gratitude to those who helped us during the process of conducting this project, and especially thank Dr. Shi-zai Chen for accepting our interview and offering us abundant relevant information. Now, many residents in Tianjhong approve of our project and encourage us to finish it

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We learned how to design a webpage and to search information effectively. After we ourselves wrote the content of this project, we made a progress in language use, learned how to collaborate and negotiate with each other. We play the endorsers for our hometown to promote this place, and expect foreign people can know more about this place and pay their visit here someday

During the period of conducting our project, we know more about our hometwon, Tianjhong. And we realize that the existence of the historically meanful buildings, Jing Sung Hospital and Shao Shan Hall, in the downtown of Tianjhong represents the development of the Chen family here, and it reminds us to have sympathy with the poor and to try our best to help those who really need our help. We are really amazed with the contribution of the Chen family in Tianjhong.
