Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Xiaji Town is located in the northern end of Lingwei District, 28 kilograms from the city of Weinan .Xiaji,formerly called Xiabang,is one of an ancient market town, has a total area of 92 square kilometers and town jurisdiction 33 administrative villages , 214 village groups, pop. 51611. In 1997, Xia Ji town was listed on the construction of small pilot towns by Shaanxi government, and it had completed the road paving, green street, tap into households, low line transformation, Jing Yin Street and drainage projects, built shuangguan road, 10000 square meters of commercial housing and North qishizi business districts, the businessmen are more than 1300, rally day booths is more than 800. The district has one high school, 2 junior high schools, 34 primary schools, 2 health centers and 33 village clinics.

2. Summary of Our Project

Our project name is “Burning waste straw is strictly prohibited”. We mainly focus on taking picture, visiting, collecting information for straw burning in GUI town, during which we received strong support from the town and talent Company, the local town government and other units, so we got a lot of material. We try to use own website to get more people to understand the harm of straw burning, and we hope more and more people never burn straw, let our homes more beautiful.

There are only 2 computer classroom in our school, computers in classroom can not get on to the internet.The teacher's computer and various office computers can access the Internet, there are only 5.5% students have computers at home in our school, so the time is limited, we have to download some material and references in the teacher’s office at noon and on weekends, while other tasks are edited in the computer room.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Campus network was instability. Our school's Internet access through a computer as ADSL proxy server, other computers access the Internet through a proxy service, so the Internet speed is very slow, we have to wait for a long time to download the material. Our schedule is very tight. Teachers will go for classes everyday, and they are also very busy, in order to catch up our classes, we have to learn on time every day according to the schedule, so will do our work at noon and extra-curricular activities time, but the time is limited, we have to work on weekends. The obstacles to make webpage, it is very difficult for us to make it, because we are not very familiar with software, so the teacher taught us some skills in their spare time. English level problem, our English level is not high, so, we can only resort town and talent teachers. Here, thanks to them.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

In this month, we have experienced too much, there are sweet and bitter, I also have a lot of harvests. In order to let more people realize the importance of the destruction of the environment hazards and environmental protection, we went to collect on-site materials several times. Although our strength is very weak, we have delivered the power to the home children. In this month, for our common goal, we lost a lot, but we got more!

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

With the experience of the last failure, we start all over again so early this year. Because of no good at computer skills, we started to train after selecting team members. We began by learning the rudiments of webpage-making, learning how to upload images. We spend a lot of time to make webpage. Although the page we made was a bit tough, but we believe, in the main gathered our experience from practice, the more we practice, the better.

Hardware: computer, digital camera, U disk, notebook Software: Frontpage: webpage-making?Photoshop: editing images?Microsoft Word: writing documen?Internet Explorer: searching information?ACDSee: Browsing Net: CISS, Email, BBS, ADSL The information tools & technologies above were useful for our collecting information and webpage-making. Digital camera, one of tools was a prize from Town and Talent. The other tools were from school, teachers and parents.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

1.Wu Hao,Gao Sijing and Wang Bochao take photos, Searching information,Organize information and images,Project research analysis, Webpage making,Write documents and Cyberfair thoughts . 2.Headteachers:Tian Gang,Qu Chunping and Li Hongwu,Contact interviewee,Network and technical tools offers Provide books on our project theme. 3.Li Jun and Qian Junfeng,Guide us to carry out project; Responsible to handle such matters as the student’s safety out of school;Contact with interviewees and arrange interviews;Take photos,records, search information, webpage making, upload website.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We did investigation and data collection for all the towns nearby the county, this Cyberfair had affected all the students and local people: first, our school students have a new understanding on the environment protection. The students were very surprised when they saw the information that we collected. Second, the impact for local residents. The local residents understood the harm of burning straw, so that they would never burn straw in agricultural production.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

1.Li Chun, Lv Qing(Town and Talent Company)Provided technical assistance. 2.Tian Gang(The principal of Xiagui Town First Junior Middle School)gave us strong support and cares. 3.Zhang Xinxi(A biology teacher of Xiagui Town First Junior Middle School)provided information about the harmful of straw burning. 4.Yin Canjun(Xiagui Town party secretary)told us that what measures did they take to ban burning waste straw. 5.Zhang Bo(Xiagui Town Police chief)told us that what measures did they take to ban burning waste straw.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)
