Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The Dangaer ancient city is situated in Huangyuan County of Qinghai Province, in north shore of Yellow River and the Shore of Western Sea, and is the source of Huangshui River, 40 miles away from Xining City. It is praised as the “Sea Throat” and the “Tea-horse City of Business”. The Loess Plateau and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau are combined here; the farming culture and the prairie culture are interacted here; many nations are gathered here, and it is praised with the good name of “Sea Throat” , “Tea-horse City of Business” and “Little Beijing”. There are long-standing history and colorful folk culture here; it is always the economic and cultural hub and military strategic town of West China; it has unique cultural brands such as Tang-Tibet Ancient Road, South Silky Road, Riyue Mountain and Huangyuan Bank Light; it also gathers multiple exquisite national handicrafts such as leather embroidery, drawing and embroidery. In recent years, Huangyuan County has positively strived for cultural project construction, and has invested more than 100 million yuan to excavate historic culture, and it has excavated and arranged the Kunlun Culture taking the stone chamber of Queen Mother of the West in Zongjia Furrow as principle, the commercial culture taking the Dangaer ancient city as the principle, the military culture taking the ancient castle group as the principle, the religious culture taking the North pole Mountain as the principle, the historic culture taking the Riyue Mountain as the principle and the folk culture taking the Huangyuan bank light and the leather embroidery as the principle, which have become the tourism brands of Huangyuan. The successful holding of the Huangyuan bank light art exhibition, as well as folk artwork exhibitions of leather embroidery, paper-cut, embroidery and shadow puppet not only shove windows of folk arts, but also open the culture door of Huangyuan.

2. Summary of Our Project

In this CyberFair, the instructor showed us a lot of excellent works of the previous sessions, and we were hesitated to produce the same excellent works. Our instructor said: “we are in the same team, and we should solidify and cooperate together; union is strength, and we will conquer every difficulty as long as we unite together.” We should try best to learn more knowledge to enrich our brain and strengthen self-confidence, at the same time, we should work hard to strengthen the team building, to make our team develop in a united and harmonious way. The gains can only be made when striving in difficulties, and we should believe in ourselves and firm our target, to strengthen the team solidarity and cooperation, as well as mobilize other classmates to study with us, to propagate the spirit of solidarity and cooperation, and to lean from others’ strong points to offset our weakness, and form the idea of joint force.

Our school set up 1.6M optical fiber broadband access. Computer classroom and teacher’s office have got the access to the Internet. So it was convenient for us to search information on line. Maybe it was the biggest advantage in this project.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The participants of this activity were all lodging student of Grade Eight who lived in rural areas far away, and we had intense learning tasks. We got up at half past 6 and started our morning study at half past 7, and we had self study after lunch, and we had just 30 minutes for extracurricular activities, therefore, we had intense time for webpage making. Although with intense time, we had high enthusiasm to find time to search for data and pictures. Our school provided us with good network equipment, and we strove to finish our tasks with the help of the computers in the machine room and the teachers’ office.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

The activity of the webpage making of “Li Yongqing - The embroiderer of Dangaer” made us experience a lot; in order to make more people fall in love with leather embroidery and make more women and the disabled participate in producing of leather embroidery, we visited Li Yongqing, the embroiderer, and asked her to tell her experience of starting the business, as well as the materials, methods and process of leather embroidery producing. In order to exhibit the leather embroidery art in a better way, the leaders of our school supported us to make leather embroidery enter into our school and our youth palace. The experience of starting the business of the embroiderer made all the teachers and students deeply moved. In our lives, the plenteous fruits can only be obtained when giving hard and continuous efforts, and with perseverance, willpower and willing of paying out.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We took the experience of starting a business of the embroiderer and the artistic works of leather embroidery as the principal line, to excavate folk arts as well as carry forward and inherit the folk art in our hometown. In this activity, we combined subjects of Chinese, History, Geography, Art, Culture, Computer, activities of Youth Palace and Social Intercourse as well as local folk literatures, to make the “leather embroidery” enter into classroom, to introduce the legend stories in the leather embroidery works, which told their dream of good life. Our school combined with the activities in Youth Palace, to conduct study exhibition, and brought the works of embroiderers to the school, to make all the students appreciate and feel the charm of the folk art. All these were done with the help of many respected teachers and lovely students as well as many people who provided us with help, and I wanted to express my thanks to them. We deeply felt that we could not play the role of “Propaganda Ambassador of Folk Cultures” without excellent team spirit and communication ability.

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Hardware: Computer, digital camera, DV

Software: Dreamweaver,Photoshop CorelDraw,Microsoft Word, Outlook express,CISS, ACDsee, FTP sever

The digital cameras are mainly used to take photos during interview and communication, while the video camera is used to record the process of interviews.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

This interview of leather embroidery made us understand the artwork in our hometown, and we cherished this opportunity very much; we were very pleased to play the role of “Community Ambassador of Propaganda of Folk Handicraft – Leather Embroidery and the Road of Starting a Business of the Embroiderer”, to make more people understand the contribution of Li Yongqing, the embroiderer, to the promotion and inheriting of leather embroidery art, to make leather embroidery glorious and beautiful forever.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Li Yongqing, the embroider, and her training company took the advantages of teaching facilities and teacher faculty, giving play to the leading functions of the base in professional training of the disabled, professional competition as well as practice. With the specific advantages, Dangaer leather embroidery has become the method for the disabled to take employment and increase income; the vocational training school drove the employment of a great number of rural surplus labor and the urban laid-off people in the way of receiving professional embroiderers as well as company plus farmers, and comprehensively promoted the training level and quality of the disabled, and connected with the labor market, to greatly promote the employment of the disabled. Today’s Leather Embroidery Company has formed the production line pattern, with regional division of labor. With the enlargement of the existing production line, the company has formed a situation of annual output of 19.3 thousand pieces of national handiworks, in which 14.3 thousand pieces are small article leather embroideries and cloth embroideries; the company export sales has been increased to 160 thousand yuan in 2013 from 100 thousand yuan in 2012. Besides, because of this Youth Startup Contest, she decided to continuously make innovations and connect the promotion of national culture with the promotion of employment rate and of ordinary people income as well as the re-employment of laid-off staffs, to make more people benefit from it, and make leather embroider, the folk culture, inherited and developed in a better way.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The leaders of the Propaganda Department helped us to contact with the embroiderer, and the leaders of the school provided us with help on funds and vehicles, and the uncles in the block gave us warm introduction.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Before participating in this activity, we knew nothing about leather embroidery or its artistic value. When seeing the vivid leather embroidery works in the company of the embroiderer on that day, as well as the skilled producing technology of the embroiderer and the students, we were shocked by leather embroidery art. On that day, we knew that the skin and hair of animals on plateau such as cow and sheep can be endowed with new life after processing and producing; leather embroidery had its artistic value and artistic life, and different works had different stories. We expected that by our hard propaganda, Dangaer leather embroidery would be inherited, and many people would join in the leather embroidery art, to make this folk art carried forward.
