Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Guide county is located in the transition zone of the Loess Plateau and the Qinghai Tibet plateau. Laxiwa Hydropower Station is located in the branch of Yellow River which is at the junction of Guide province and Qinghai County, it is the second cascade hydropower station which is immediately after the Longyangxia hydropower station from Longyangxia which is on the upper reaches of the Yellow River river to Qingtongxia which is being planned large and medium-sized hydropower stations. It is 32.8KM from Longyangxia power station on the upstream, 73KM from Lijiaxia Hydropower Station on the downstream, Xining City, 134KM from Xining City, Qinghai province highway, 25KM from Guide County in lower reaches, the external transport is conveniently.

2. Summary of Our Project

The installed capacity of Laxiwa Hydropower Station is 420KW, it is the largest hydropower project on the Yellow River Valley, which has the largest amount of energy and good economic benefit. It is not only the main power of 'the power transmission from west to East', but also the strategic project to transport the power of northwest to the North China Power grid. After the power station is completed, it is mainly responsible for the northwest power grid peak shaving and emergency standby, and it plays an irreplaceable role on the Northwest Power Grid 750KV and the implementation of the northwest power grid to the North China power grid transmission.

The campus networks are under construction. We use dial up for our connection, the internet speed is 2M, and only one or a few computers access internet.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

While collecting information and making Webpage, we encountered many difficulties. In order to understand the Longyangxia field survey, take a good photo, we walked to visit the Laxiwa Hydropower Station Reservoir, dam and generating units, this time we spent a whole day to search, climbed the hill, went to the underground, visited every corner of Laxiwa Hydropower Station. We felt very hard at that time, however, the engineer who led us told a lot of knowledge and the construction of the dam for us so that our visit course was full of a lot of harvest and happiness. The classmates all said that we not only enjoyed the beauty of nature, felt the human wisdom, but also learned a lot of knowledge outside the textbooks through this activity. In addition, we must study hard while completed our work. After all, we are now in grade 8, it is very important for us this year, the learning task is heavier than primary school, so teachers can only take us out in the weekend time. Through the teacher’s training, we finished the webpage on Sunday at home, we would ask the teacher through the telephone if we have any question; our tutor was busy with work, the teacher accompanied and guided us in the whole process, so they were very hard, we would like to thank them.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

It was very hard in the process of collecting material, but we benefited a lot, understood the role of Qinghai Guide Longyangxia hydropower station. Through the social participation and scientific management, we achieve the goal of protecting ecological environment and the way to sustainable development. So we want to protect her. Although we had some trouble along the way, we learn a lot outside of books.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The water of Hydraulic power utilization is mainly contained in the water potential power. It is composed of buildings to concentrate the natural flow of the gap, forming water head, and with the collection, to adjust the natural flow of reservoir; basic device is a hydraulic turbine generator unit. When the flow of water through the turbines, the turbine is driven by the current and rotation, the turbine drives a generator, and the mechanical energy turns into electrical energy, and then delivered the power to the user through the power transmission and distribution equipment. Hydropower is renewable energy in nature, it can be recycled with the hydrologic cycle, Hydro electric power does not consume fuel in the operation, operation and management cost and power cost is far lower than the coal-fired power plant. Hydroelectric power generation has chemical changes when the hydro energy is turned into electric energy, harmful substances are prevented to produce, there is a little influence on environment, so the energy is obtained from the hydraulic power is clean. We understand the relevant content about hydropower from books, television, network and so on, combining comprehensive practice course in the school, walking out of the classroom into nature, came to the Yellow River shore, into the Laxiwa Hydropower Station, through interviews and personal experience, in the teacher and the relevant personnel introduction, we learned beneficial effect of hydroelectric, and we are proud that we have such power station at home, start from the protection of the environment around, do small guards to protect the environment. In the interview process, we also felt that it is impossible to finish all this without teamwork.

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Hardware: Computer, digital camera, DV

Software: Dreamweaver,Photoshop CorelDraw,Microsoft Word, Outlook express,CISS, ACDsee, FTP sever

The digital cameras are mainly used to take photos during interview and communication, while the video camera is used to record the process of interviews.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

The environment protection is a topic that the people often see on various media about about human health, people are also very concerned about the environment and economic development, when they were conflicted, businesses and individuals often take economic development in the first place, neglect or deliberate the environment, and hydropower is a clean energy. As a middle school student, we have the responsibility and obligation to protect the environment. The purpose to make the webpage is to let the people in our hometown and the people who travel here understand the exploitation of the Yellow River, so as to improve the understanding of the use of clean energy, and let the government and the enterprise put the environment on the first place in the development of the economy, keep economic development and environmental protection in harmony.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

1, this project shocked the students in our school, at first, many students doubted if we can finish the work, they thought it was impossible to make a theme website. Then interview outside is fresh for them, a lot of people are interested in participating in this project. 2, under the guidance of the teacher, we went to the Laxiwa Hydropower Station, the staff felt very surprised that we can put forward such a big topic about cleaning energy as a student,they thought that only adults can participate in and discuss, we as students were not interested in this. But in the interview process, they were shocked when we discussed the topic about wetlands with the knowledge we had learned on the books and internet. 3, after we finished the website, we obtained the encouragement of school teachers and students, and they thought it was extraordinary because we had never known about this kind of activity. But we thought there were still a lot of shortcomings and regrets, and we hope that we can do better in the next Cyberfair

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

This activity has gained support from the school, school leaders are very supportive for our actions, and provide us with the car. Through closing nature, we broaden horizons, and we are marvel at nature's magnificent, through field visits, let us feel the human wisdom and the mechanical strength of the great science and technology. Through this activity, we understand that the 'Where there's a will, there's a way', as long as there is a conviction in your heart, overcome difficulties, you will be successful.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

This is our first time to go out of school to visit, although it was very hard, we were very happy that it was the first time to wear safety helmets approached the water power generation, the first time to take pictures of water storage dam with the camera, we tried our best to take the whole view, but there was only a part of regret each time, the first time to have no confidence... so many first times. The event will enable us to benefit from life. By 4 months of hard work, data was collected, although it was not very well, our first work was finally done, the result is not important, the most important in the whole process is that we had learned a lot without on the book, learned a lot about the Yellow River water resource knowledge, we know the future is full of hope.
