Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Red on Tree is a firm that was co-founded by Che-hao Lin and his school mates from National Taiwan University in Taipei. Taipei is a city surrounded by mountains, and hence provides opportunities for the citizens to connect with Nature. Mr. Lin, grown up in Taipei City, has enjoyed ample educational resources and been offered access to Nature, which scatters seeds in his heart that he will one day make money and do good to society by starting his own business.

Taiwan has been renowned for its fruit production as “Fruit Kingdom”. However, Taiwanes farmers plant good quality fruit but earn very little profit. The problem with fresh fruit is that it can only be cosumed during a specific season. Red on Tree has made efforts to preserve the flavor of fresh fruits while expand the preserving time of fruit products. It also hopes every Taiwanese county has its own renowned fruit product which someday could be enjoyed worldwide.

2. Summary of Our Project

Red on Tree is a small firm that has been founded for a couple of years. By making processed products with sole use of fruit and farm produce grown in Taiwan, it makes continual efforts to present such Taiwan’s flavors to the people in Taiwan and even wants to promote these processed fruits around the world. They have provided a wide variety of products, including jams, gummies, ice cream and coffee, all of which are made from toxin-free farming without any additives. This new brand emphasizes in-season products, with a priority on food safety and good quality. Its brand promotion and product development very well presents the vitality and creativity of Taiwan, and demonstrates the love and concern that young generation bears for the land.

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Every computer in the I.T. classroom has access to Optical fiber network, which connects to Taipei City Educational Portal Site. We make good use of it during after-lunch breaks or after-school time to discuss, check information and print. The Web environment of the team members’ households : ADSL or Wifi Wireless Service

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We have made interviews with many government officials, college professors, business owners, school lunch committee members and farmers. We had made thorough preparations before every interview, meanwhile a lot of bad news about food-safety broke out within months, and we had to modify our questions for the upcoming interview over and over again. With our teachers’ guidance, we gradually got confidence facing this challenge.

The preparation for the charity bazaar has been a lengthy process, which includes discussing about the items for sale, making contact with farmers, booth decoration and promotion, and deciding on what units that we would donate the money. The most difficult part lies in our sale items. We really want to earn more money to help the farmers, yet the preservation period of fruit lasts shorter than what we imagined, not to mention transportation and stock problems. Thanks to the great help from local farmers and our parents, we have finally managed to make a success of the charity bazaar.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Mr. Lin have set a good example in his effort to pursue his dream --building the highest standard for Taiwan’s food industry and promoting Taiwan fruit is his ultimate goal. We believe Red on Tree can make unique flavor of Taiwan and can represent the spirits of Taiwan.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We have learned updated knowledge about organic or toxin-free farming during our research, and been informed of the harmful consequences of chemical additives. From the interviews, we got acquainted with much more knowledge. In the regard of natural science, we interviewed professors and experts in the areas of food processing and food inspection, thus acquiring knowledge about food safety and genetically modified food, knowing the benefits of organic vegetables and fruit, and improving our own thinking ability and language skills as well. In the respect of Mathematics, we drew a chart of statistics, which explicitly show us the polled citizens’ opinions and acceptance. In the respect of IT, we employed Excel analysis and made charts. In the area of Integrated Education, we have developed integrational ability in designing questionnaires with our ideas and data at hand. We hope people might get acquainted with the knowledge we have learned in the process. Webpage design is not only about IT capability, it has a lot to do with our curriculum as well.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Every student had a computer in the IT classroom where we visited almost every school day. Another useful tool was our school library for information search and exhibitions. The software we used the most includes: Google Chrome as our main searchingmachine, Microsoft Excel for making questionnaire statistics charts, and Adobe Dreamweaver to build our webpage. They are all very helpful and valuable to us.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We were deeply touched by Taiwanese farmers’ sincerity and the determination of Red on Tree. They told us what kind of difficulties they have encountered and we realized then that what a big blessing to live in Taiwan and have good fruits and tasty agricultural products all year long. It is hoped that through our charity bazaar, book recommendation, blog, interviews and this webpage, more and more people will come to understand the value and core spirit of “Red on Tree”. Last but not least, we hope to introduce the best flavor of Taiwan to the world.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We were lucky enough to know about a young company, Red on Tree, which shows its respect for our land. More importantly, we have made our school, teachers and students alike, know about this firm that combines good farming and advanced food technologies through our activities too. Thus everybody at our school has got acquainted with local fruits, food safety, organic/ toxin-free agriculture and so forth. This makes people better understand the importance of local farming and identify with local fruit planters. We were so moved by the hard-working farmers and decided to introduce this marvelous fruit to our community. We held a charity bazaar to sell fruit and jams made by Red on Tree. People loved everything we sold and asked where they could buy in the future. We promoted local farmers' business and donated all our profits to the kids living in remote areas.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We have made interviews with many people, such as a famer who won the most important agricultural award in Taiwan, the famous writer Ms. Yi-lan Yeh, and a professor from Graduate Institute of Food Science and Technology, National Taiwan University. We also had chances to take a look at our local government’s lab room. If without their support, we cannot present this wonderful project nor could we learn a lot about food safety and nutrition.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

A good firm is established on the foundation of a conscientious leader, while the leader’s notions come from his or her love and concern for the mother land. Therefore, “conscience” is the ultimate protection for any company. From “Red on Tree,” we have realized that many youths in Taiwan are willing to make honest efforts and do right things regardless of failures. We also walked into many orchards and marketplaces where lots of planters and vendors insisted on doing what is good for consumers and selling best-quality fruit and vegetables. All such heart-touching matters are delightful and surprising for us, and we feel so blessed to be living in Taiwan.
