Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

In the 1600s, Tainan was the capital of Taiwan. The place was full of trade, markets, people, and enthusiasm. However, after 1683, when the Qing dynasty came and conquered Taiwan, Taipei replaced Tainan as the capital. Today, Tainan combines its rich history with modernized city plans. Tourists can see an old, European castle sits between the traditional market and a business skyscraper. Of course, problems occur while modernization and development. Pollution, local security, and industrial transition appears in Tainan. One of the most important problems is the disposal of stray animals, especially the stray dogs. Government does not want to deal with those animals, thus it simply kills the animals. Though, there are amendments and different proposals raised in out legislation, the conflict of whether or not to keep the animals alive and give them a new home or to kill the animals is still an essential one in Tainan.

2. Summary of Our Project

Our project is focusing on the disposal of stray animals in Taiwan. Li-Feng Huimin Pavilion is a local group that tries to save the stray animals that are sentenced to death by the government. They have a house that contains nearly 1,500 stray dogs. After sheltering the dogs, they also provide food for free until the dogs are adopted. Their goal is to let the government and the community know that stray animals should have the right to live. Stray animals are the same as humans. They deserve to have their own voice, so do not give up on them. In our project and website, we will discuss and analyze not only Li-Feng Huimin Pavilion's contribution and future plans for the stray dogs, but also the disposal situation in Taiwan and the mechanism of TNVR (Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, and Return).

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:4-6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1. On-site interviews and filming 2. Time management 3. Integration management 4. Teamwork We were not very experienced in certain skills required for this project to be a success, but we managed to learn them as we did our research; hence, we should improve our time management skills. Furthermore, because our seniors shared their experiences, we were able to work on some fundamental ideas and work our way up. However, because of our inefficiency due to lack of teamwork and experience, we faced a myriad of obstacles whilst working on this project. Nonetheless, under our teacher’s guidance and teammates’ help, we were able to finish this project, and learn the prominence of having a coherent team.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

During our research on this topic, we believe that we all have undergone a change that developed us a new attitude towards learning and researching, the importance of teamwork, and the distribution of work amongst ourselves.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We followed the curriculum requirements of Ministry of Education of Taiwan; including social studies, economic, arts and local culture. Our Cyberfair is based on visiting and interviewing, and complete the following steps: 1. Topic selection 2. Collect information 3. Visiting and interviewing 4. Results and analysis

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

* Laptop Windows 7 and MacBook Pro OSX - record interview and operate project * Telephones - contact members and teacher * Digital Camera - take pictures * Adobe Photoshop CS3 & CS6(MacBook Pro) - photo editing * Microsoft Office Word 2010 & 2011(MacBook Pro) & 2013 - * Dreamweaver CS3 & CS6(MacBook Pro) - website design and upload * Dreamweaver CS6 - software reference book * Interview - Independent Volunteer Association interview * USB - transfer informations Digital Camera is our most helpful and valuable tool. Without it, the photo gallery on the website wouldn’t have been so amazing.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

After our team discussed about the topic, we contacted Mr. Wang-Feng through Facebook, and we also got in touch with Lily Oshiro. Through their approval and notes, and their inconvenience to have an interview since they’re overseas, Wang-Feng and Lily Oshiro recommended a well-known Taiwanese celebrity who would be the spokesperson for their team -- Mr. Yang Huai-Min. When we contacted Mr. Yang Huai-Min about our interest in interviewing him, we were lucky enough to have his approval to interview him in Taipei. Because Li-Feng Huimin Pavilion does not have fundraisiers, the founders of the Pavilion use the resources they have, and evey one of the founders would provide more than a million dollars to their cause as they strongly believe in the principle “Those with manpower will contribute manpower; those with strength will contribute strength; those with money will contribute money.”These successful people in society would rather give up a luxurious life and set their hard-earned money down for their cause of helping stray dogs. And by their cause were we deeply inspired. In addition, when we were interviewing Mr. Yang Huai-Min, we had a set of questions ready for him to choose from and answer. Mr. Yang Huai-Min was very enthusiastic about the interview and provided all the information that we needed. He has been a huge help to our project; had he not helped us and agreed to the interview, our project would not have ended on such a good note.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We hope to let more people know about the realities of stray animals. Not only that the government lacked the adequate policies and actions to improve the situation, but also that the public were unaware of the seriousness of this issue. Through our project, more people will be able learn about the details and the contributions of Li-Feng Pavilion and how it managed to resolve the problems of excessive stray animals. Moreover, people can understand how to protect animals and promote equality between them and humans. Most importantly, we would like to let people understand the importance of life and avoid further persecution.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We contacted Li-Feng Pavilion through passionate instructors and parents, who had fervidly provided us necessary resources and information, which allowed us to get it touch with the Pavilion.
