Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Taiwan lies on the Tropic of Cancer with a four-season climate, so it has great natural resources. Taiwan is famous for great mountains, water and scenery. However, floral art are not as outstanding. The study of flowers started late. Its development and promotion are not as good as highly developed countries. Eventually, our researchers combined flowers and art together and have got some achievement.

2. Summary of Our Project

There are more than one hundred plants on Victoria Academy’s campus. Our purpose is present the beauty of Taiwanese floral art. There are various kinds of flower fields, markets and expo that draw lots of tourists. In order to enrich our project, we’ve planned some blossoms viewing trips for visitors to have a complete flower tour. Our project has five categories: introduction, flowers of Taiwan, function, art, team member.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:not sure

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Picking the subject gave us a headache. We wanted to do Floriculture Research Center and talked about the finance and development of flowers, but then realized it was too small. And then we decided to do floral art. Everyone got lots of ideas about this. There are various floral exhibition and many flower fields in Taiwan. However, due to the distance, we couldn’t visit all of them. Therefore, we chose certain ones nearby. Besides, exhibitions and interviews, we also try to do floral art, such as floral cuisines, paintings, products and develop aesthetic sense.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We wish we could make the whole world see how beautiful Taiwan is through this project.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Victoria Academy opened a research class for the 7th grade in order to make students learn about cooperative Learning and fundamental research skills. The topics are usually related to life experiences. Floral art can be seen everywhere and it is a mental enjoyment. More and more flowers are used in Taiwan. There are many art exhibitions all over Taiwan. We visited Floriculture Research Center in our neighborhood, flower fields in Taichung and a big flower park in Changhua. We hope to present the beauty of Taiwanese floral art through our project website.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

projector, interviews, telephones, internet, book, newspaper, pen recorders, DV, DSLR cameras, scanner, printer, laptop, flash discs, software - dreamweaver CS3.0, PhotoImpact12.0, Flash Cs3.0, and interviews

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

When it comes to floral experts, Floriculture Research Center crosses our minds. It’s not open to the public, so we have to make an appointment. Mr. Hsieh, the director, who has been very helpful. He answered lots of our questions on the phone and in mails. Unfortunately, he was too busy for an interview in person. But he had Mr. Ding, a senior researcher show us around and do the interview. He is very knowledgeable, particularly in floriculture and breeding science. We’ve learned a lot from him.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We learned many kinds of flowers. We found more than one hundred kinds on campus. We drew a flower map with photos we took to promote the beauty of flowers and make people pay more attention to the surroundings. After all visitations and interviews, we organized the information and promote these floral art events. Also, we organized some flower tours for tourists. Hope we can introduce the world how beautiful our floral art is.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We’d like to thank Mr. Hsieh Tingfang, the director and Mr. Ding I, a researcher of Guken Floriculture Research Center. Mr. Hsieh learned that we were doing a project, so he tried his best to help us and had Mr. Ding show us around and do an interview. Moreover, the tour guide from the floral park association in Changhua who took us to circle half of the park by bike. We’ve learned a lot from them.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Every team member grew a lot by doing this project. The fusion of flowers and art is kind of special that it shows the beauty of flowers and gives them lives. Since we’ve been studying about this, our thoughts on flowers are not merely “beautiful”, but more feelings. We learned a lot of knowledge not in the textbooks. Communication with classmates inspired us much. We also discussed about the meaning of floral art. Now whenever we see flowers, we would stop and spend time observing them.
