Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The city in which we live is a picturesque locality, situated at the foot of volcanic mountains, which makes the landscapes to be so diverse on one side the green forest that covers the mountain peaks and on the other side the yellow farming lands that are so common for the smooth depression of Baia Mare. Our community is currently undergoing a change of mindset, considering the fact that, until recently, the environment was assaulted by the mining and non-ferrous metallurgy units and now, the local economy attempts to take into consideration the premises of sustainable development, focusing on highlighting the exceptional landscape and the clean industries.

2. Summary of Our Project

Our project aims to demonstrate that sustainable development is the premise for a healthy environment . We consider this to be extremely important for the planet, a good thing for all humanity, especially since our descendants have the right to enjoy an environment as close to the original as possible .

In this project we intend to learn new things and to teach others, in our turn, that we can now appeal to building from natural materials that are environmentally friendly and, moreover, they are also energy efficient and economical. Another very important objective for us and for the community is to effectively manage waste and having this in mind, we intend to build a solar panel made of recycled materials and to find other ways to use the organic waste that lies around us. And last but not least, we want to become more aware of the environmental issues to be found in the area where we live, and also to send a visual message , raising the awareness of the people on the environmental issues around the world, by making short videos.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

In our project we had to face some problems like bad weather ( which was quite a challenge in the case of field trips) such as rain, snow and high winds; other problems we had to face were the cost of the material that I could not be purchased through recycling and another problem that we encountered was actually gathering the recyclable materials for our projects. The time required for the activities of this project overloaded our usual program and since we are preparing for the high school graduation, this was quite a problem.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Throughout our project, we want to show to the whole world that the environment can be kept unaltered if we try sustainable ways of managing waste or organic materials in order to build constructions with unique shapes that fit perfectly in the natural landscapes and which are more efficient from the point of view of the economic exploitation.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The issues dealt with in this project fit like a glove to the national curriculum in Romania, considering that in high-school we studied issues such as environmental degradation, topics related to the conservation and the protection of the environment, the natural and anthropogenic hazards and other global problems of mankind such as global warming, urbanization and globalization. Also our school profile that of constructions, the activities of the project teaching us that the ecological architecture can also be very efficient and graceful.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Throughout the project, in order to for carry out different activities, we used various tools and technologies that helped us achieve the desired results. Thus, the personal computers and the computers from our school CDI brought us closer to the desired information, different computer programmes helped us to process video images to achieve short films or to project green houses. Our mobile phones offered us instant communication, which has helped us find optimal solutions. What we found really helpful were interviews and lectures given to us by various people involved in a sustainable lifestyle.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We feel great in the position of ambassadors of a sustainable lifestyle and also delighted that we can show the world what our small community, at the foothills of Gutai, can do , that we manage to make the transition from an economy based on mining and non-ferrous metallurgy towards an economy based on the sustainable use of the environment.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The project was presented in our College during a few meetings attended by several classes of students, and all our ideas were introduced to a public that loved and supported our work. We had the support of some young enthusiastic people from an ecological association, we had the help of people who lead a sustainable lifestyle- such as people trying to apply in Romania the concept of permaculture and ecological construction- and people who succeeded in making interesting and attractive things out of human waste.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

In our project, we had some volunteers who helped us in conducting activities and who also came up with ingenious ideas to demonstrate that sustainable development is not just an idealistic concept but it can be an efficient and economic way of life. The volunteers who helped us in the project are young enthusiastic members of ATPM and the young permaculture pioneers, who had introduced this concept in a village close to Baia Mare.
