Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Ping-Er Highway starts from Gao-ping Bridge, southward along the provincial highway no.1, through Pingtung County to Fonggang Vil. Fangshan Township, then transfers the provincial highway no.26 to arrive at Eluanbi where is at Kenting, Hengchun Township. The total length is about 100 km. The effects of the shade trees not only can shield from the sun, but also can make the environment more beautiful, decrease the amount of noise and ultraviolet ray, lower the temperature, and subtract air pollution…so on.

In the course of this research survey among native Pingtung know some things are more understanding of some greenery.

2. Summary of Our Project

Roadside trees provide shades and beautify the environment, not to mention that they can reduce noise level and exposure to ultraviolet radiation, lower temperature and mitigate air pollution. In the heated land of southern Taiwan, we learned a lot of the local greeneries by researching into roadside trees of our home.

Besides the above-mentioned functions of roadside trees, we expect to confirm what we have learned from the textbook while enjoying the research process.

This research examines the illumination, noise level, ultraviolet radiation value and temperature under the shades of roadside trees with readings taken from illumination photometer, decibel meter, ultraviolet meter, and thermometers in order to analyze various functions of roadside trees.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Each class in the school has a computer and Internet, to enable teachers and students on the use of teaching and learning. our cyber Environment: School connection is 100M Optical fiber, so it is quite convenient. The school's network environment, providing fast and convenient learning environment so that we can efficiently do the research ?

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The biggest problem we encounter is lack of common time we can work together because the group members are formed by diverse graders. Thus, each of us has different courses and schedules. Some people are even busy studying at cram school on holidays. Therefore, we can only work together at lunchtime or after school.

We feel tired and tend to doze off during class because we usually do our reports at lunchtime. It really diminishes our concentration in class and causes a lot of troubles to us. Then we plan to arrange the tasks among the group members. The members who first come to the meeting are responsible for data analysis, and the latters do other jobs, such as taking photos and recording. Therefore, we can avoid the quarrels resulting from unbalanced distribution of tasks among us, and further complete the research efficiently.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

In the past, we all focused the information we can get from the textbook. After industrial revolution, people’s lives are getting much easier. However, while we are enjoying the benefit of revolution, we are unconsciously destroying our environment.

Our teacher used to say to put what we have learned into practice. But due to certain reasons we did not concretize our teacher’s instruction. For example, our parents couldn’t bring us to excursions due to their busy working schedule. The result is that we know little about our environment.

We didn’t care about the roadside trees because we think they are irrelevant. As we grow up, we see the consequences of fighting against nature, and we grew wary of human’s future. Now we are forced to contemplate on what we should do to improve our environment, and plant more trees and cherish Mother Nature.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We learned methods of data collection, but also learn how to analyze data using technology to make research and analysis reports. The thematic study,we learned interview skills, cameras and image processing tools, web authoring tools such as the organization has learned to write the report layout and finishing with an important division of labor.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

we use *Digital Cameras:Take the picture *Digital Cameras:Photography *Phone:Contact *Notebook:Produce reports and Web *Scanner:Scan pictures and documents *Printer:Print data file *Recorder:Recording the interview process *Flash Drive:Data storage and Web *Computer Software *SwishMax4: Create animation *PhotoImpact: Editing Images *Namo WebEditor: Create web pages These hardware provider we can collect photos, sounds and videos. The software provides us to very quickly complete image processing and web production. Software tools are purchased by the school, and some hardware by classmates. We agreed that the most valuable tool is the Internet, because the Internet provides us inquiries collecting data. We learn to use the experimental apparatus to measure, as well as how to make a web page. For us, technology is invaluable. For us, the biggest harvest is learning to use the experimental apparatus to measure, as well as how to make a web page..

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In this 5 month project,we discovered that scientific study required long-term observation and experiments. We admire those hard working scientists and we had learned a lot in this project. we as senior students lead juniors for discussion. Apart from regular courses,we should be given extra time for more materials and to do field trips.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Through our website, people can understand the resources of Pingtung County. Our website also provides people understand the growth conditions of trees.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

School teachers and community residents to provide many of our assistance ?Teaches us know the types of trees and learning classification. We completed the study together, to thank all the people who support us.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

During the research, we know a lot of love nature friends. Our group of friends are all very fond of discussing about environmental issues, particularly in relation to topics of trees, It was unanimously felt that carbon reduction is currently the most important issue, If we can not give up the convenience of modern life, at least we need to increase the coverage of the plants, rather than decrease it We feel that street trees can be a good starting point reduce carbon emissions, give us shade , although in the statistical analysis the research process is confusing , we hope that the results of this study, in addition to letting everyone know that trees can shade ,beautify the environment, reduce noise pollution, shield out UV damage .. etc., allow us know the life around the beautiful greenery.
