Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

A rather small town in northern Romania, Radauti is part of the historical region called Bucovina, which is famous not only for its kind and hard-working in habitants, but also for the breathtaking sceneries you will find there. The citizens of Radauti think of their country as being more than plainly their residential area, but also a zone where outstanding leaders and models thrive, leaders that helped out community get through all the hardships they encountered throughout the time they've belonged here.

2. Summary of Our Project

The goal of this project is revealing some of the succesful leaders that have built up their careers from scratch, in most cases, guided us through changing our perspectives on everyday matters, and helped us extend our boundaries when it comes to creativity by thinking outside the box. Some of them are well-known leadership icons, some of them not as much, but despite an individual's popularity on the matter, we are inclined to believe that they are the downright best at their job. Due to the rather low amount of leaders in certain areas, we want to bring the fact that almost anyone can become one into the site's visitors' attention, waking up their sense of leadership, through presenting how others have built their way up and succesfully had an impact on various situations.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

To begin with, our class’ profile, mathematics and computer science, is one of the most demanding profiles available to the Romanian highschoolers, both physically and mentally. That does not leave a lot of free time on our hands, and when it does we do make sure to get the most out of it. Before engaging in participating in this project, we did have a clear idea on what was to come, the extended schedules and fatigue that resulted from having to keep up to day with all our subjects, as we do have expectations to meet, not being able to assign all our attention to one project, regardless of its amplitude. Also finding accurate information was rather difficult, until our classmaster stepped in and provided us with her recommendations regarding safe sources, our main source being the Internet until that moment. Translating was one downright exhausting process, unlike coding, where our only problems were tuning everything up to work to our liking, because we had one translator and an enormous wall of text waiting to be processed.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

A recycle bin full of empty coffee cups worth of experience and fun.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

In spite of the short time frame we allocated to the project due to our crouwded schedules, we tried to be as clear as possible when it comes to stating our purposes, and although at this very moment not a great number of people have been involved we do plan on extending to at least the local schools, presenting our ideas and hopefully planting the seed of leadership into the young minds. We did not learn any new skills, but greatly improved what we already had, mainly our designing skills and the stress really helped us work better under pressure, adding up experience and a better view on how things work around here.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

In the early phase of the project, we started out with a couple of computers provided by the school and a couple of usb flash drives, during the computer science class, mainly to get a rough idea of what lies ahead of us, but as we made progress we realised that constantly transfering data from the school computers to our personal ones was just not efficient so we began bringing our laptops to school, and when we found the time we would just meet up, sharing a phone's 3G data connection and make the most out of it. We have also made use of a digital camera for shooting various pictures illustrating our progress and asked random people around the campus to complete our survey.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

The project's participants were also involved as active speakers, especially for the survey we came up with, so that we managed to finish the project and find out the results, which did not seem to be significant before putting them into practice. Through this amount of collective work we woke our team spirit up and realised who is actually leading us, we opened our eyes and have seen who the true leaders are. Hearing about our project, a colleague of ours who was willing to help, but could not due to lack of free time, wanted to at least 'donate' a domain which helped us greatly and all these resources provided by unofficial volunteers of our cause, made finishing the project possible.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We can but hope that our project will have some impact on the visitors, making them become aware of the ones that lead us and our country, put a little less light on the corrupted part of our system and highlighting the acts of the people that actually overcome great challenges in order to put our country not only back in line, but in the tops too. The majority of people whose opinion we asked were rather excited about it and we are looking forward to hearing the views of a wider public.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

During this project we have organized a survey which involved people that were not part of the team, such as highschool colleagues and citizens that we happened to come across, and surprisingly a number close to half of the amount of people that we recommended our site to actually visited it, which was confirmed by the number of different IPs that have accessed our webpage.
